A staple in Singapore’s nightlife, Sivanesh on his real name Sivanesh Pillai it is a fixture at some of the city’s hippest spots, through his residency at CÉ LA VI at the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel and with regular guest DJ outings at The Council, Tanjong Beach Club, and Kilo Lounge. Regional attention started coming through after a well-received set at Cercle’s debut Asia show with The Martinez Brothers in November 2019, eventually leading to bookings at the Wonderfruit Festival in Thailand, W Hotel and Iron Fairies in Kuala Lumpur. His sound goes beyond current trends in genres and is held together by equal amounts of groove and soul.
While 2021 continues to hold many uncertainties for the live music scene, Sivanesh and his partner Lilian Hautemulle have launched Sivilian Affairs, a project that is focused on intimate parties with an emphasis on collaboration, inclusivity and having fun.

Before nightlife in Asia came to a halt from the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Sivanesh was a regular fixture at his city’s hippest spots, through his residency at CÉ LA VI Singapore at the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel as well as regular bookings at The Council, Tanjong Beach Club, and Kilo Lounge. Regional attention started coming through after a well-received warm-up set for Cercle’s debut show in Asia with The Martinez Brothers in November 2019, leading to bookings at the Wonderfruit Festival in Thailand, and the W Hotel and Iron Fairies in Malaysia.

Since then, the mission has not stopped and music has remained a key focus for him. To stay connected with music during the pandemic, he started getting commissioned to curate guest mixes for publications, record labels and event promoters from around the world such as Mixmag Asia, SaturdaySelects in Kuala Lumpur, Concept from Romania, and the Shi Fu Miz festival in Hong Kong. Since 2021, he has held two radio residencies, beginning with Bicycle Corporation in Vietnam and now at AAJA Music in London.

In 2001, Sivanesh and his partner Lilian Hautemulle launched Sivilian Affairs, a project that’s focuses on intimate parties with an emphasis on collaboration, inclusivity and having fun.

Citing seminal American producers ‘Mood II Swing’ as an early musical influence, Sivanesh’s sound is held together with equal amounts of rhythm and soul and it goes beyond current trends in genres. Anchored in the belief that only quality matters and genres do not, his approach to the craft has allowed him to share the decks with esteemed DJs such as Chaos In The CBD (In Dust We Trust), d’Julz (Bass Culture Records), Jasper James (Optimo Trax), Okain (Talman Records), Rampa (Keinemusik), and many more.

Despite having to lay low in 2020 due to the global pandemic that has kept Singapore’s nightlife at an absolute lull all year, Sivanesh was able to round off his 2019 with a well-received set at Wonderfruit in Thailand, which inspired him to co-launch Sivilian Affairs with partner Lilian Hautemulle, where the pair would focus on intimate parties with minority talent from within Singapore and across Asia. We’re hoping to see Sivilian Affairs come back to life along with the rest of Singapore’s underground diaspora so DJs like Sivanesh can drop impeccable sets like he’s just done for this week’s episode of Mixmag Asia Radio.

It’s hard to pin Sivanesh’s style down. 

Citing seminal American producers ‘Mood II Swing’ as an early musical influence, Sivanesh's diverse playlists are held together by equal amounts of groove and soul.

While building connections across the region and learning the intricacies of the live music business, his long-standing residency at CÉ LA VI Singapore saw him taking charge of the world-renowned main room and delivering extended DJ-sets every Sunday night, and was a huge part of developing his brand of sultry off-kilter house and groovy heads-down techno. 

Through this residency, Sivanesh has been a guest at some of the region’s most respected venues, with regular dates at The Headquarters and Kilo Lounge in Singapore penciled every month, and recent regional gigs at the W Hotel and Iron Fairies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

His roots will always be house, but being open-minded and anchored in the belief that only quality matters and genres do not, he is always aware of what the room needs and that may be his best trait. 

After ending 2019 with a well-received DJ set at the Wonderfruit festival in Thailand, at the start of the New Year, together with his partner Lilian Hautemulle he co-launched Sivilian Affairs, an organization focused on intimate parties with an emphasis on minority local and regional talents. 

Unfortunately, like every aspect in the nightlife industry, their inaugural party (Make Your Move.) was affected by the ongoing global pandemic. This unexpected delay has given them time to pause and fine-tune the blueprint.

While the rest of 2020 holds many uncertainties for the live music scene, one thing to be sure is that Sivanesh will continue his journey within the dance music scene, staying true to his ethos to surprise and delight.
