We have been looking forward to this one for a long time!

Michael Walsh sent us some seriously beautiful beats and we couldn't be more excited to share Part One of his Mix-Ins mix (look out for Part Two soon). 

Michael has long been on our radar for his impeccable musical tastes and talents.  Since his earlier days in Boston working for Satellite Records, writing record reviews for Turntable Lab as well holding the role of Content Director for Dubspot,  we've always known that Michael would continue to do big things.  You can currently find him writing and doing photography for Ableton & other sites and if you're lucky you can catch him playing music in various venues around the world.  Admittedly Michael loves playing smaller and intimate gatherings where the music feels most special and we couldn't agree more.  We are thrilled to showcase his talents here.

"This mix for Monthly Mix-Ins was a departure from my usual DJ style. It’s been raining in California for three months and I didn’t realize until putting this mix together that I’ve been buying a lot of deep and somber tracks to weather the storm. These songs linger along a tangent of sound best heard alone in headphones in the morning rain. I used a combination of mixing records, CDs, wav files to create this journey."

Michael Walsh -  Monthly Mix Ins

DJ Bruno is a name that needs little to no introduction. However, we'd be missing an opportunity to express how deeply grateful we are to be hosting this exclusive mix from one of House Musics greatest contributors. Bruno has always been there for us. We can recall times when record shopping in Boston was an easy way to spend your weekend hours. Visiting Bruno at his Biscuithead Records Store was easily the best stop. Somehow you left there with so much more than just vinyl. The respect he showed for his customers and friends always left a lasting impression. You always came away better for it. Whether you were lucky enough to catch those early years at  the Loft or stumbled into any of his Utopia parties in Boston, you know that his closest friends are family. Everyone is welcome. The dancing and Unity are infectious. It's been there as long as I can remember. How many cities or scenes can say that ? 

This one hour mix is something special that many will be pleasantly surprised by. A few years back, Bruno played an old school Jungle set at Elements in Cambridge Ma. The longest running drum & bass night in the country we might add. While Bruno is well known for Deep house and beyond, it's not every day that you'd catch something so completely spectacular. He tore it up with all the riddims and rolls and made it look effortless. From that day on, I always wanted to share that experience with anyone I could. This mix brings House and Jungle together. Wicked.

DJ BRUNO’s been djing in Boston since 1987. Became known in the college scene in the late 80’s to early 90’s for mixing Hip Hop, Reggae, RnB & House Music. Then in 1991 he began a residency at the BOSTON LOFT with Armand Van Helden. Then in February of 1992 he started the Legendary Utopia Parties. Utopia still remains as one of Boston’s hottest DEEP HOUSE MUSIC events. In 2006 Boston Magazine awarded him DJ OF THE YEAR. In 2007 Weekly Dig awarded Utopia Sundays the BEST HOUSE NIGHT IN BOSTON. On December 22, 2012 he was forced to retire due to health issues with diabetes. That same evening politician Tito Jackson gave him an award that said December 22, 2012 was DJ BRUNO DAY. After an operation which caused him to lose some of his vision he enrolled in the Carroll Center for the Blind. At the center he learned to cope with his blindness and to continue loving life. Still determined to do what he loves he came out of retirement on July 2013. That same month he released his first mix cd in 14 months titled “BLIND FURY”. Today he is still doing what he loves and will continue to do so until the day he dies. “LIFE AIN’T WORTH LIVING IF YOU CAN’T DO WHAT YOU LOVE DOING!”

This month’s Mix – Ins comes from someone who is approaching his 36th year DJing. Selections and overall vibe were inspired by his evening set under the moon and stars at Rise of Anti Festival V this past September. 

The Rise of the Anti Festival is an end of summer getaway where a small group of friends from every corner reconnect and hear skilled DJ's who are encouraged to “play outside of the box”, often choosing music that dares to be different. It’s a super cool, intimate vibe, and is fast becoming a yearly staple for us.

This one hour 45 minute mix is a fantastic representation of getting down with new and old friends outdoors. Many twists and turns take place while playing the long game. This is certainly a journey of magic and mystery, beat juggling, house and chuggy goodness all wrapped up in the essence of one of my lifelong favorites.

This dj set, aka "Jungle Kait" features a broad range of Jungle's sub genres dating from 1991 to 1999, and was spontaneously woven to keep Jungle aficionado, "Kait" occupied as she waited for now ex-roommate to arrive home. Perched on the couch from which she did not move once during this set, she declared after the last track had ended, "I had NO idea you spun this kind of music!" Listen and know, this is Jungle, Breakbeat, 'Ardcore, Ragga, Jump Up, Drum & Bass, Dark, Hard Step & Tech Step all mixed, matched, juggled & cut the way it was meant to be, but is rarely heard.

Jackmaster Flash - Jungle VIP (Rough Sketch)

Being exposed to funk at a very early age gave DJ Jackmaster Flash a strong vantage point where dance music is concerned. He started his interest in music as a toddler, crying for the likes of Curtis Mayfield & Isaac Hayes from his play pen in the early seventies. Influential musicians like these were favorites of his mom, and played an integral role in forming his musical tastes. The desire to capture more parts of songs that were more appealing to him came on very early, and when he saw Afrikaa Bambataa in 1977 at a community party in the Bronx, he knew just how he wanted to do it. However, tape splicing and “pause mixing” would be his only option until finally acquiring his first set of turntables in 1984.

The name “Flash" was given to him in 1985 by a b-boy crew from San Francisco as a playful reference not only to instant beat matching and signature style of mixing techno with hip-hop records at 45-rpm, but to playfully suggest a legend in the making like Grandmaster Flash. By 1986 he was referred to as “Mixmaster” Flash and not long after “Jackmaster” Flash, (or Jack MF) in honor of house music.

For almost 30 years Jack MF has headlined a who’s who list of venues ranging from the most intimate underground parties to the bigger more legendary clubs and parties, like Limelight, Caffeine, Stereo, Shampoo, Traxx, Lansdowne Street, Underground, Zootz, and many more. A DJs DJ, Jack MF is recognized and credited by legendary DJs like "Lil Louis" Vega, Kevin Hedge of Blaze, Ron Trent, and house vocalist/DJ Eric "E-man" Clark, and was often asked to entertain at backyard parties where other legendary DJs and promoters gathered exclusively. He is also known for producing his own legendary events as far back as 1986, and for leading “A Book Called Galanta” a group that completely changed the face of the rave scene from New England to The South with their famous Full Moon parties during the early nineties.

Jack MF doesn't just drop tracks, but creates a whole new groove, being very particular about timing and harmonizing. The mix is constant, and the result is an even richer, more soulful sound than the records have alone. Countless DJ's have been affected in one way or another by his style, and many credit him for his willingness to share his knowledge. Most DJ/Producers who learned personally from Jack MF have gone on to earn everything from regional distinctions to international fame. Some own their own record labels.

There's a certain authentic flavor in his sound that is hard to come by. Perhaps he owes this to his record collection which dates well before the earliest disco. Jack MF has witnessed the transformation of ALL TYPES OF UNDERGROUND MUSIC since the early seventies. Almost every track he owns was acquired at the time of original release so his knowledge of history is strong. His massive and diverse collection is undoubtedly one of the most complete when it comes to classics. 

Whether live or recorded, a Jack MF set will take you on a musical journey. He takes you deep, brings you up, puts you in orbit, and brings you back down to Earth. Each set is designed and catered to move any crowd. His broad range of music, versatility, and connection to the audience guarantees to move absolutely anyone. Whatever he plays, you can be sure that his heart will be in it.
