This Wednesday was our closing show for summer. Katerina Mortzou, one of the central female figures in the Underground Electronic Scene in Greece, presented her sound aesthetics through an Exclusive set and revealed in public her deep ultimate connection with Detroit. We commonly decided to make this show, in an immediate response to the filed for federal bankruptcy protection of Detroit, the onetime music powerhouse of House Music itself. This city, along with Chicago, was the place where everything started for the House Scene world while.

K.atou BIO:
Started collecting electronic music oriented records at the age of 17, djing at the age of 18. Then back to Corfu she continued with frequent parties and a radio show every weekend as well as a series of parties. The sessions lasted a year, till she moved to UK due to a university scholarship. In UK it seems she found one of the most inspiring friends. In the meantime she performed in different venues in Athens as well as famous Synch festival of contemporary electronic arts on the Red Bull Home Groove stage. In 2006 the NY label Goosehound assigned her as "foreign diplomat". After a trip in US and CAN for music meditating, as she likes to claim, started working on production. First found its roof at the respected Berlin based Einmaleins musik label.K.atou changed her base during 2006 from Athens to London and in summer 2007 moved to Berlin. Her online mixtapes, as well as her yearly appearance at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival’s after-hours parties have become staples of the underground house and techno scene, and has played at almost every major city in the US and Europe, as well as festivals such as Glastonbury and Rizzla event.
This Athens-born young lady is responsible for bringing fresh four-to-the-floor beats to her city's clubs, but quickly outgrew her territory and transplanted to Berlin and the UK where her career skyrocketed to international recognition. Today she’s a globe-trotting DJ femme-fatale with a vault of Chicago and Detroit house gems that have become the core of her creative house-based sets. She shows off just how tasteful and passionate she is about good house music.

K.atou began her Dj career as a teenager but continued when she moved to Corfu to study. There she worked on radio, and organizing regular evente. 今年の３月に私のパーティー"Revolt!"をアテネの"Six d.o.g.s"というクラブでZipと2 MKIIと一緒にプレイした時のウォームアップセットだよ。


3月にアテネの"Six d.o.g.s"というクラブでZip、2 MKIIと一緒にやってるパーティー「Revolt!」に向けたワームアップセットをレコーディングしました。


-コンセプトがあれば教えてください。

DJする時はいつもレコードを使ってストーリーを表現しようとしているよ。
これはいつもインスピレーションを与えてくれるZipの影響なの。


-最近の活動を教えてください。

親友のJonn Melchiatとコラボしてトラックを作っていて年内にリリースを予定しているよ。
あとギリシャの島で日焼けにも取り組んでいたわ。

At her most comfortable in the hazy glow of the morning, K.atou is the kind of DJ that prefers a time in the party where the edges are worn out and a more meaningful relationship can be struck up with the crowd. The Greek selector of course has the means to ignite any time of the night, but there is after all a certain magic that comes over a party’s later hours, when the crowd is ready to fully experience the sounds being presented to them.

It’s the same way K.atou felt as a child, worshipping at the altar of the family stereo and passionately taping her favourite jams (Josh Wink and Grandmaster Flash amongst them), immersing herself in record collecting at the age of 17 and starting a radio show during her studies in Corfu in her late teens. From these seeds a lifelong dedication to DJing emerged, deepening her education through time spent in London and Berlin. Around this time she began to forge connections with key conduits in the European house and techno scene, releasing early productions on Einmaliens alongside Nutown Project and on Lick My Deck in collaboration with Mikael Stavöstrand. 

By 2009 K.atou was ready to move back to Athens and immerse herself in the scene in her home city. As well as occasional events of her own, she established residencies at the notorious Six D.O.G.S and Revolt! that continue to this day. Meanwhile her international DJing schedule blossomed as well, taking in key performances across Europe, Russia, South America and the U.S. Among the many highlights were DEMF after parties, regular appearances at Club Der Visionaere, Circo Loco and many more besides. 

With her mind squarely focused on carving this dedicated path through DJing, K.atou maintains her position at the forefront of the electronic music scene both in Greece and elsewhere. The ingredients of her particular sound can be attributed to the classic realms of ‘90s house and techno from Detroit, Chicago and Frankfurt, with a penchant for the trippy, dubbed out and sublime. Both warm and distinctive in her approach, it’s not hard to understand how K.atou’s craft has taken her so far already. The intrigue lies in wondering where it will take her next.

#4 comes from my good friend K.Atou aka Katerina Mortzou from Athens, Greece. I first heard her play at an after party at DEMF in 2009 and became a fan instantly. Her sounds range from deep house to stripped down techno, always accompanied with an underground, elegant minimalistic vibe. Katerina has been very busy lately throwing parties the at the infamous 6 d.o.g.s., in Athens in which she has and is bringing out major techno and house DJ's from around the globe.

I Had no doubt picking the artist which would take Lomidhigh Mixtapes virginity. K.atou had to be the girl. Despite the fact that she still hasn’t finished her ep for Lomidhigh Lmtd, I believe it will happen one day in the near future, hopefully 2010 will be the year. Back home in Athens after 2 years in Berlin the sailor has returned to her Mediterranean Sea, sipping drinks by the pool and skinny diving under the waterfalls. Wonder what she is up to besides enjoying life.

Where was the mix recorded ?
In a very special chamber that doesn’t allow BPM to be more than 120.

You’ve recently moved back home to Athens after 2 years in Berlin – too many parties ?
too many parties.. too little time.?! no I’m only child i wanted and had to be close to my family, after living away since I was 18 … plus that I’m from the Mediterranean and my DNA demands sun and above 30 degrees temp at summer time ..

What have you been up to lately, are you working on any interesting projects besides enjoying life and finishing your ep for Lomidhigh Lmtd ?
Sailing, swimming, travelling, eating .. working on several different projects, like recording vocals for several producers, making music, and enjoying a dry from gigs summer .. good conditions to be more productive and not have you waiting for another 2yrs for the EP.

I’m not even gonna ask you which club is your favourite club, everyone who knows you the slightest bit knows that Club der Visionaere is the place you are at – what makes this place so special to you ?
the location, the energy, the people that participate from all posts to this place, the willow tree, the opportunity to listen the most amazing music in a wonderful environment. the center of the world as we say.

How is the techno/house scene in Athens compared to Berlin ?
I wont compare… not yet.. but if things go as planned, Athens will be able to get its little piece of the techno pie soon. Athens is riding this wave that goes down and then of course it will go up.. something that I never felt happening in Berlin though.

I’m only aware of Lemos, Kreon and yourself from Greece, please name me some more artist that I should get into ?
Argy, GummiHz,And. Id, Mr. Statik, Novox, Ison & Solar, Ekkohaus, Tolis Q, Leon Sega.. I guess you got homework for the next few days.. just with those names.

…oh dear are they all from Greece.. At least I knew a good few of them from their productions.. Obviously not from their nationality.

On the 5th Sept. there´s the Athens Dance Festival – enTechno – ένTechno, the line up for the event looks massive, what is your expectations for this 24 hour party? Will this be a returning event in Athens ?
enTechno – ένTechno is a great collective work to show around Greece and the world how many artists and what a talent this country has, combined with the presentation of films that are dealing with the electronic music, a passion that has made many of us leave our country and now we have the chance to be all together again and dance for 24hrs.

You’ve been playing quite a few places around the world, which city did you enjoy the best ?
Tough one.. well.. USA in general is my fav place to play actually. the people really have fun, knowledge and they love dancing.. the community in USA is strong and with loads of fun. Detroit is the city I enjoy the most playing every time the past 4years I go there.

What do you pick up in the airport when you go travelling ?
A coffee mug for my mum from each and every city I have travelled to .. now she has a huge vitrine with all of them ..cigarettes and a bottle of whiskey (no surprise on that one I guess).
