The idea to put together a band originated soon after Martin (drums) and Eddi (bass) met and shared their musical interests somewhere in early 2008. But it was not until later that year that both had a bit more time for new music projects and they started actively looking for other musicians to join. Markus Müller was soon found to play the guitar and a few month later Jens Heiber joined behind the microphone. 
The idea was to have a band where everybody could put in their creativity and let their compositions grow to see what happens. It soon became apparent that everyone had totally different musical back grounds, ranging from heavy metal to jazz from african roots to funk and R&B and back to prog, making it quite an interesting mixture. But the common thread that kept everything together turned out to be the odd meter stuff that every one enjoyed playing. And it was challenging, too, every so often switching from 5/4 into 7/8 passing through 9/4 and taking it home in 11/8. - quite scary. Yes, it was clear, all had monkeys in their heads.
During spring 2009 a lead guitarist was found in Georg Füngling, who'd been looking for exactly such a creative outlet and whose playing immediately made the band sound a lot heavier. Every song or musical idea has undergone several changes over time and each and every one is challenged to make things work somehow. With that said, a name for this somewhat crazy melting pot came quite naturally and Monkeys In Your Head was born.
Late 2009 the band spent a weekend recording in their rehearsal room and soon met the limitations of such an approach not only quality-wise, but also it turned out to be very time consuming and the result was not very satisfying to the majority of the band - in fact, the recording were actually never finished. The good thing about it though was that everyone learned a lot, including the song structures, a bit about recording techniques and especially how not to do things next time around. Unfortunately, that next time around was not going to come soon and the band split for awhile. 
In 2011 Georg, Martin and Eddi got back together and found a new singer in Holger Sauthoff. Some of the old songs were re-worked and new song texts were written. Also a number of new songs were added to the repertoire. Towards the end of the year new goals needed to be defined and it was clear that if the band would ever do another recording session, they'd wanted to get it right this time. So with a bunch of songs and many more ideas a studio booked for August 2012.

With 6 days of studio time planned at the Spacelab Studios in Grefrath, Germany, the band prepared around 6 months, rehearsing to click tracks and working out various parts and soli, leaving enough room for some spontaneous actions when time comes. Eventually it turned out to become an 11 day adventure. But it was a great learning experience for all band members with lots of waiting time and great laughs, but also a fair share of worries of whether MIYH could pull this off as planned. Under the superb guidance of Christian 'Moschus' Moos the band recorded five songs: ‘Suffer In Silence', 'Loosen Up’, ‘Chances-Listen To My Heart’, ‘Hear The Beating Of The Dragon Heart’ and ‘Jelly Pearl’. 
The final mixes were then mastered by Eroc at Eroc’s Mastering Ranch! The band chose for more of a warm and balanced seventees kind of sound rather than a mastering in which everything is compressed and pushed to, if not over, the limit as is common nowadays for a lot of bands. If it sounds good on your stereo at home, it will most likely not fail on your MP3 player and the like either - but the other way around, if it sounds good on a smart phone it does not necessarily mean it sounds good on your stereo.
