7 years ago i head drum and bass for the first time, it was the song 'let me hold you' from calibre. It's a song i could listen every day without getting bored of it. I feel like that about most of the music that calibre made. It's energising and relaxing at the same moment. It's the music that i want to hear when i wake up and go to bed at the samen time. It gives me goosebumps even when i heard it a 1000 times. It inspired me to start Dj'ing drum and bass and explore more music. That's why i wanted to make a tribute mix about his music. 

I will probably also do a tribute mix to Marcus Intalex his music in the future.

All-Fanu Mix Vol 9

Following on from the bleak desolation of the Dystopia mix, here's one that evokes happier times. 

Journey with me back to 1996 - a time when a young DJ Smart and his best pal MC/DJ Cruise (now a middle-aged Selectabwoy and Olly WiseGuise respectively) fearlessly ventured from the south-west to Northumbria uni, bringing the rolling vibes of our hometown to the north-east, armed with little more than a crate of wax and a big bag of skunk each - well, that's how I like to remember it.

It was a fantastic time of sheer abandon and wilfully outrageous hedonism - and as you might imagine, many of the memories are blurred in the fog of time and substance abuse. Without the ubiquitous tyranny of cameraphones and social media to preserve our nefarious activities, all I can really tell you is that we went for it, hard... but I can at least recall a few of the DJ sets at house parties and club nights (including our own Wax On Wax Off venture); spinning old skool hardcore that I was picking up for 50p a pop in 10-15 Music Exchange (that no other fucker seemed to know about); Olly on mic duties for luminaries such as Randall & A Guy Called Gerald (I have no recollection of the latter but am reliably assured it did happen); the two of us playing b2b supporting the likes of Ed Rush, Kemi & Storm; the mitsi-fuelled pride of seeing Roni Size's Reprazent tearing it up on stage in Middlesborough during their first UK tour. Not to mention all the townie nights out. It was the best of times. 

My cue for the selection here comes primarily from mine & Olly's record bags of the era, inspired in turn from an obscure Venn diagram intersection between the legendary Bristol Ruffneck Ting nights, the all-important One In The Jungle shows, and, 300 miles further north, my first impression of the northern D&B scene: L Double's trademark dreads bouncing up and down as he played to the half-empty upstairs room of some seedy topless bar in South Shields. He still rinsed it out proper though - Lee's selections back then really encapsulated everything I find great about this era: a weighty, crowd-pleasing mix of jump-up, rollers and techstep, blended to perfection. Forward a year or so and D&B was all over Newcastle as it was everywhere else, but it's those first memories that really stick in my mind. 

Big shout to Olly first and foremost, and our long-lost crew - Pottsy, Bailey, Jon Waco, Chris Weir, Mark Dowie... Scotty (howay play the game lads) - I hope this mix finds you again someday. Mizeyesis is a dj & producer from the Northeastern United States, she resides in Boston. She's also US Manager and Founding Member of the US Chapter for DNB Girls. Her whole life she was engulfed in expression from being a former professional dancer who studied with Alvin Ailey, to visual art, to learning & studying music at an early age.  

Her start began in 2004 in where she started to dj, throw events and co-founded a collective, Threshold Sound based in Connecticut.  In 2008 she joined several collectives in NYC and other New England states, and began to travel out of the area more, building a national name for herself. 

In 2010, she was approached by Satellite EDM to curate their DNB & Jungle selection on their online store. With several guest mixes under her belt she gained the attention of Jungletrain.net and produced a show, The Aural Report, exposing fans of this music to new artists and new djs which ran 2011-2018.  She also worked on a project with Wu DJ Coalition (Wu-Tang DJ's) on a show called "Culture Clash" exposing hip hop fans to bass music and jungle/dnb for 6 months.  Following that, she was also approached by DNB Girls to become their US Manager and assist with the expansion from being a solely Canadian collective.  To date, DNB Girls has over 20 members, 10 of which are located in the US.  Mizeyesis was also approached by MIA DNB to become a member of their collective in 2013 and has been a member since. 

2015 saw her first release, with the independent UK label, Hexagon Digital in which she collaborated with Skru on the "Sea Jah EP" (HEX002).  2016 she collaborated on a full EP with AwakeFM for Omni Music, "Convergence EP (OmniEP106), and also during that time, began working on a 7 track EP for Faction Digital, Seven Systems which was released in 2017. She's released on YESKA Beatz Unlimited "SoundBwoy Haze"; Salvation on Junglist Resistance - a 31 track international jungle compilation to raise money for charities against violence, hatred and discrimination; participated in JungleWars 2017; a collab with acclaimed artist, Rainforest on "Rise of The Warrior" EP for "Guidance" released in 2018; 2020, "Call to the Ancestors" off Repertorie's Streetlight Volume 1, 2021 Sultry for Just Be and most recently in 2022, Warmth for Yeska Beatz, Ruff & Rugged Vol 3. 

She has been featured in articles and/or submitted charts for DJ MAG, Mixmag, Resident Advisor, UKF, Beatport, and other electronic music publications over many years and recently.  Other projects include "AMEN RA Trifecta" a trio featuring artists, Meszenjah & Elijah Divine; Working with Girls Rock's Boston Chapter as a music educator.  

To date she has performed at festivals such as Outlook, The Winter Music Conference, Ultra Music Festival, Tribal Gathering, Fractalfest, Beltek, Catskill Mountain Jubilee, Higher Education, Ziontific & many others; High profile worldwide DNB nights such as Rupture (London), Respect (LA), Renegade Hardware Weekender (London), Elements (Boston), Konkrete Jungle (NYC), Direct Drive (NYC), Natural Selection (NYC), Two:Tone (Dallas), MPLS (Minneapolis), & many others.
