« Quand on écrit, on est un gangster impuni, jamais attrapé. » Né en 1939 à Boulogne-Billancourt, Bertrand Blier est l’auteur-réalisateur de dix-neuf longs-métrages qui l’ont imposé comme l’un des francs-tireurs du cinéma français, du documentaire « Hitler… connais pas ! » (1963), jusqu’à « Convoi exceptionnel » (2019). Parmi ses hold-ups, citons ses 5,7 millions d’entrées avec un film culte, violent, drôle et choquant, « Les Valseuses » (1974) ; l’Oscar du meilleur film étranger pour « Préparez vos mouchoirs » (1978) ; ses trois Césars du scénario (1980, 1985, 1989), pour « Buffet froid », « Notre histoire » et « Trop belle pour toi », ce dernier film remportant également le Grand Prix du festival de Cannes ; sans oublier le grand prix européen de la Mostra de Venise, pour « 1, 2, 3, soleil » (1993).
Entre les tournages, Blier écrit du théâtre et des romans pleins de verve et d’humour désespéré, dont le très réjouissant « Fragile des bronches » (2022, Seghers, avec la collaboration de la journaliste Eva Bester), récit réinventé de son adolescence entre premier amour, quintes de toux et naissance de sa vocation.

« C’est un métier d’adolescent attardé et rêveur, de marginal… pratiqué avec des acteurs qui sont fous parmi les fous. » Extérieur jour, un après-midi à Paris, près de la gare du Nord : ARTE Radio frappe à la porte de l’un des plus grands cinéastes de ce pays pour une leçon de scénario à domicile qui, bien entendu, ne se passera pas comme prévu.

Flegmatique, le scandaleux metteur en scène de « Tenue de soirée » se définit parfois comme un « écrivain de cinéma ». L’extraordinaire musicalité de sa prose goguenarde, à la confluence de Céline, Kafka, Beckett et du roman noir américain, a subjugué trois générations de spectateurs. Et quelques réalisateurs – Quentin Dupieux, Gustave Kervern et Benoît Delépine, Alexandre Astier –, qui se revendiquent de son méta-cinéma, gouailleur et provocateur, lyrique ou grand-guignolesque. Gageons qu’ils apprécieront ce conseil : « Au stade de l’écriture, j’accouche de choses effroyables, impossibles à filmer telles quelles, mais extrêmement jouissives en soi. Ensuite, il faut gommer, peaufiner, équilibrer. Puis inventer les images justes. On peut tout dire, tout faire admettre, si c’est esthétiquement valable. C’est à ce stade qu’on évite le scandale gratuit. »

Mais comment ce fils d’acteur célèbre, aux piètres résultats scolaires, s’est-il imposé – façon diesel, lentement d’abord, puis à toute blinde – comme un auteur incontournable du septième art ? C’est le sujet de ce premier épisode qui démarre plutôt calmos.
