For a few years now, Lisbon has been a better place with the presence of french keyboardist, composer, beat maker and DJ Larry Quest. When Larry arrived he had just released his debut EP on the revered Delusions of Grandeur label (headed by one of the UK’s greats, Jimpster).

Hot on the heels of this love, Ka§par met Larry  and both started a long and fruitful relationship that would place Quest at the top tier of Lisbon-based producers and DJ’s with a string of impressive releases, some of them on PERCEBES MÚSICA: “Faíscas”, “Austro” and now his final piece as a Lisbon resident “Entrega” - as he prepares to head back to Paris in search of bigger and better conquests.

In this, his final opus for Percebes in 2023, the producer crafts another tryptic of incredible funky technosoul bangers! All three tracks present common features: fast paced tempo, latin-themed rhythms on top of bumpin’ four-to-the-floor stompin’, full and delicious chord stabs and pad progressions and a feeling of timeless soul and jazzfunk music printed into their melodies. These tracks will be incredible picks when played against 303 classics or soulful nuyorican house vibes.

Track 1: “Loop Hall” is a tense and dubby techno soul slammer. Luscious pads spiked by stabby organs, aided by a resonant squelchy 303 funk bass and lot’s of smart percussion. Clear, clean cut production and a solid, club heavy mix and master for the win. Very evocative of some of Carl Craig’s most classic work.

Track 2: “Father Fader” has a housier feel: a few smartly picked sampled vocal bits and smart key chops looped into a very raw analog sounding beat, while a heart racing narrative evolves around the stacking of stabs and organs that keep building on an ever increasing galvanizing tension. Peak time, fast paced deep winner.

Track 3: “Worshipping Express” brings faith and spirituality into the fold, by respectfully borrowing a classic gospel, organ driven house template and pressing it against Quest’s usual corrosive bubble-rubber 303 lines. The surprise comes when the honky tonk piano dresses the whole affair in a southern fried funk! It’s a clear Los Hermanos/Gerald Mitchell tribute delivered with great transparency and we know it’s going to be a special option for the discerning dance floor minded DJ giants of this world. Reel rite!!

There are many shades of funk in dance music. Berlin’s Toy Tonics label brings up artists that reflect many of these different aspects of dance music. Now the label comes up with a band! A band that is inspired by 1980ies New Wave as well as the Y2K Indie dance scene. Two guys and two girls from Amsterdam and Montreal called Baby’s Berserk.
Baby’s Berserk is about taking the freedom to be who you want to be, about being comfortable. Having played in all-girl punk bands since the age of 14, the bands singer Lieselot is an expert on female empowerment. “Dress like a girl and act like a boy,” is a catchphrase she lives up to every day and it clearly is a message that resonates with the band’s wild fans.
In the great tradition of Roxy Music, Throbbing Gristle and Malcolm McLaren, Baby’s Berserk is not just about the edgy music but also about a very strong own visual style. They readily blend their sounds with underground fashion. What you see is what you get and seeing Baby’s Berserk is feeling right at home. Lieselot is a visionary when it comes to stage presence. Have you always wanted to see an electronic band with a punk attitude perform wearing a mix of haute couture and Flintstone-style rags? Look no further, it’s Baby’s Berserk.
Following on the critically acclaimed singles ‘What I Mean’ (2020) and ‘Toxic Kisses’ (2022), Baby Berserk’s highly anticipated self-titled full-length is now finally about to see the light on Berlin’s Toy Tonics records. Sonically designed for gritty rock venues as well as up-to-date edgy dance clubs, Mano’s lush compositions smoothly intertwine with the highly associative lyrics written by Puggy and Lieselot. Poets and literary addicts may think they’ve just discovered the rock & roll equivalents of Sylvia Plath, Kurt Vonnegut and Allen Ginsberg. To tell you the truth: their wild guess is pretty accurate as the works by these greats lie scattered around the Baby’s Berserk studio for inspiration.
The band was born in a laboratory back in 2019. Tired of being in bands with unruly and unpredictable humans, Mano Hollestelle set out to create a group of high precision robots to create the post-punk sound he had in mind. His outdated technology of floppy disks and cassette tapes worked well to program the androids, until one day a 90s rave mixtape was mistakenly entered into his computer. House music is a feeling and the punk bots instantly got hooked on it upon hearing it for the first time. They could never be reset to factory settings again. Mano worked tirelessly with his androids, currently known by their humanoid names of Lieselot Elzinga, Puggy Beales and Eva Wijnbergen, to fulfill his evil plan to make the rockers dance and the dancers rock. Baby’s Berserk is the fiendish extension of this plot. Beware, the band’s bass driven grooves and computerized beats have been known to cast a spell upon all within earshot.
So what do the songs on ‘Baby’s Berserk’ tell you? That it’s totally fine to have lots of fun in life! To have a boyfriend as an accessory (‘Accessories’), to get inspired by Sponge Bob (‘Dancing with the Fish’) and to blend your spirits with mixers whenever the hell you feel like it (‘Rum ‘n’ Kola’).
Baby’s Berserk member Puggy Beales on ‘Limousine’: “Decant the wine from my tip jar to yours. Soon we'll be on easy street, chauffeured home from the rat race each evening. Is it everything you'd hoped it would be?”

A new Oslo label is on everyones lips. ´Lab Cleaning Jams´ is a genre free label, an open playground for music lovers on all sides of the fence. Founded and run by Ivaylo, the label will dance its way thru a wide range of club genres from Jazz to techno and everything in between. The first package of organic jams are ready, with ´Jam 3´ showing the more laidback dubby side of jazz, with references to both 90s triphop and that filmatic 70s NYC street life feeling.

We return to Asia for our next release, specifically to Seoul, to present the talented producer "Celex", yet another example of the inexhaustible quality of underground Korean music.
Celex, formerly known as Cabinett, is no stranger to electronic music, having spent years developing his own sound where house and deep were his common dominators. This time, the Korean producer moves towards a more "disco" and organic sound.
In "Capa Disco Works", Celex delivers 6 tracks in a "balearic" key where arpeggios and psychedelia go hand in hand, creating the perfect soundtrack for a Mediterranean vacation. Indeed, the album was crafted by Celex following a holiday in Mallorca.

Ahead of the release of his hotly anticipated ninth album as the Emperor Machine, Island Boogie, Andrew Meecham releases a club-focused 12” featuring some dancefloor dubs and reworks of key LP cuts.

Island Boogie arrives four years after Meecham’s previous full-length, Music Not Safari, and sees the veteran producer deliver his most ‘personal’ set yet – a collection of kaleidoscopic, cosmic-leaning, dub disco-influenced neo-boogie excursions inspired by his love of the custom-built soundsystem at Rotation Garden Party, an annual micro-festival founded by a group of friends including his former Chicken Lips production partner Dean Meredith.

It's fitting, then, that the EP begins with a superb interpretation of ‘'Dévoilez-Vous’ by T-Kutt, AKA Meredith and long-term studio partner Ben Shenton. The pair’s ‘AM FM Club Mix’ sits somewhere between classic Prelude-style electrofunk, NYC proto-house and early British interpretations of American house music. Séverine Mouletin’s chopped-up improvised vocals weave in and out of sun-bright keyboard riffs, colourful synthesiser motifs, heady synth-strings, D-Train style synth-bass and delay-laden machine drums. It’s a superb re-imagination of one of the album’s most stellar moments.

The EP’s other headline-grabbing remix comes courtesy of Leng co-founder Paul Murphy AKA Mudd. He reworks title track ‘Island Boogie’, teasing out the spacey synths and languid jazz-funk grooves of Meecham’s original mix and dialling them up to the max. The resultant revision sparkles with crunchy clavinet licks, mazy synth and electric piano solos, and spacey chords rising above a mid-tempo dancefloor groove.

To complete a strong package, Meecham adds two dubs in his distinctively stripped-back, tape echo-heavy style. He first takes on EP title track ‘Dévoilez-Vous’, wrapping vintage drum machine hits in oodles of space echo and dub delay while devoting more time and space to the killer bassline, Rupert Brown’s infectious hand percussion, and Mouletin’s vocalisations. 

To round off the EP, he dubs out album epic ‘La Cassette’, another collaboration with Mouletin that also features additional percussion by Brown. Like the original synth-powered dancefloor dubs of the early-to-mid-80s that have long been an inspiration, Meecham’s ‘La Cassette’ dub features key musical elements – many drenched in trippy effects – popping in and out of the mix, while his sturdy drums and memorable bassline spar with Brown’s percussion below.
