Australian raised, New York based producer Kate Stein makes her debut on Playground Records with ‘Mystic Saddle Ranch’ a powerful Ep full of hypnotic rhythms and beautiful landscapes, composed by 2 original mixes accompanied by high caliber remixes from Autarkic and Balam.
‘Mystic Saddle Ranch’ begins like a train barreling from far away with staccato arpeggios and modulations; like horns warning that it is in a hurry and the energy will not stop. Sensual and seductive at the same time, the track builds with an elegant current of sound. This takes us back to the beginning of electronic sounds, reminiscent of I Feel Love. The glam of Studio 54 crossover with some acid slow electro makes for an irresistible dance ripped dress.
The second track is called ‘Hi-Lo Motel’ and it gets more serious. A bouncing synth marks out a crossover bass with modulations seeping back and forth in alien tone. A smooth and rarefied flight, ecstatic, stealthy and nostalgic.
Autarkic remixes ‘Mystic Saddle Ranch’ by twisting it with a lot of funk machine. A hoarse, scratchy bass grooves recklessly as a dirty, dragged snare beats his side. Cowbells rattle for flavor as acid modulations elusively intersect. Pads of mystery take us to a break
that is quickly attacked again by the bass to unleash a brazen and shrewd dance.
Balam gives his own perspective about ‘Mystic Saddle Ranch’ closing the Ep and doing what he does best, mixing synthetic tribalism of acid modulations and frenetic percussion. His bass, his personal mark, pushes incessantly and cadency. He takes us on a sinuous and enchanting journey while chords scatter us through an open space towards infinity.

VOLTA CAB _ Balearic Balsam EP

Russian Producer Volta Cab presents himself in MM Discos with Balearic Balsam EP, a record that explores the borders of the sound that was born in the white island, blending it with a “new-wave” oriented vibe.

On the A side, Saint Petersburg based producer, shows us what he likes the most partying obscure rhythms with summery-soothing atmospheres. “Shujumi” plays along with more ethnic and oriental sounds while “Balearic Balsam” gets highly influenced by the 80’s new wave.

On the B side, the talented Greek producer “Anatolian Weapons” takes over the control by remixing Shujumi, he twists the original track and adds different acid elements building a perfect 4x4 killer straight to your brain. Volta Cab finishes the EP with “Vedic Space Vehicle”, getting a little darker than the previous tracks on the A side but without changing the vibe, delivering an excellent new-age-elektro rooted anthem.

Alexis Le-Tan and Tom Colebrook quite fluidly morph into our lazy initials: ALTC. Our current appreciation for an older psychedelic sound can be traced back to a dirty, careless and omnipotent period in the early 90’s when the sun, the Fridge Club or Space Tribe leggings brought our bodies together in time to these heroic sounds. Then it all sort of just wound down, more abruptly for some, and for a long time. But like old Smaug under the Lonely Mountain, we understood the longevity of gold. A few years just gone we embarked on a restlessly chaotic and passionate re-appraisal of our sonic past - just at a different speed. An ever growing archive and many edits later, we find ourselves still going; we are a happy and volatile little team, Mr. Le-Tan, who needs no introduction here, a Titan of this slow sound - arguably the original, whose honed booth selections are regularly adorned by loyal crowds all over Europe. Mr. Colebrook, a flash in the pan veteran of the Goa scene, now mainly chief archivist and an Internal wordsmith of ill repute.
There was a folder that existed in the archive called ‘The Socialists’ and over time as we pondered it, we began to understand the contents as taking on some sort of metaphor for a socialist arc of success and defeat, of growth and change, of hope and loss, of commitment and desertion, of lies and the truth, of battles and peace, emptiness and loss. Heroic themes indeed Comrades. As a musical selection, we wanted to imbue these metaphors with corresponding sonic inflections, sometimes we thought of sounds coming up through the ground to fight and be victorious or perhaps to lose, only to retreat and live another solitary day. Some were sounds for a moment of blissful morning sun soaked success, or the grey pulse of an imagined industrial trench. But above all - this selection of songs shows a commitment to each other and to the time and place they were made, and how they exist here - Now. We hope you enjoy the show!

Representatives of Kyiv’s downtempo wave, Kostya Kottov and Techija, have long been probing the ground for launching their own label. The starting point was their joint promoter POVILNO, under the banner of which they’ve been running events for the past few years. Staking on eclecticism and musical diversity, they’re ready to present the first compilation of the newly minted imprint – a collection of slow-burning tracks inspired by the power of organic elements and psychedelic experimentation from artists around the world, including duo Stevie R and Parisinos, Roe Deers, Dan Bay, Colossio, LEONOR and ID_UA.

The compilation opener “Information Society” sees the massive bass lines of UK label bosses Inside Out, Stevie R and Parisinos, their sense of drama and epicism meet the chilling vocals from 70s videos about information overload. The result is a slow but weighty track for early dancefloors and late night hangouts. “People Know” from label mate, Ukrainian producer ID_UA, is a psychedelic stroll under a palm-crossed sky. A tight groove with tantalising synths and a splash of trippy guitar parts. The mood is picked up by the Mexican Colossio with the exceptional diamond collection “Shofar”, a perfect dancefloor piece where guitar and brass sounds intertwine to leave a mark, a constant intrigue and a mysterious atmosphere that hypnotizes you and keeps you moving.

At the helm of the B-side is Lithuanian nightlife powerhouse Roe Deers with “Monotony Killed Dinosaurs”: soft breaks and a tight beat laden with shifting percussion immerse you in the nighttime jungle. “The Darkside of Orgánica” by Frankfurt-based musician Dan Bay is a fusion of the tranquility of nature and a sense of danceable energy; a track that hangs on to raw and dynamic beats and a winding lead, providing a pulsating, hypnotic immersion. Closing the rotation is Guadalajara-based producer Leonor’s ‘RWandaS Bells’, which blends influences of folk music and primal rhythm with a special dub flavour. Close your eyes and embark on a fascinating journey to complete this compilation.

Themes For Divided Tribes Vol. 2 is the second EP of edits and reworks from @DEKADENZrecords. DEKADENZ is a record label and club night in Jakarta, run by Jonathan Kusuma, Aditya Permana, Ridwan Susanto & Benedict Pardede. The club night has had featured guests such as Dreems, Thomas Von Party, Manfredas, Switchdance, Simple Symmetry and Timothy Clerkin creating a new home for underground techno, leftfield house, new electronic pop and tribal-krautrock. 

This EP opens with Bangkok based @SunjuHargun who has released on leading imprints such as Turbo Recordings amongst others.  Here he has crafted a mutant slow burner that drives you into the abyss. An abyss filled with molecular structures playing the role of a melody trying to escape the world of divided tribes. Sunju Hargun once again fuses the grey area space between the music of the body and mind.

We are honored and excited to present the ‘Drum’n Voice Remixed’ album by the legend Billy Cobham in collaboration with Italian’s finest music producers and composers Novecento. 

Acclaimed as jazz-rock fusion's greatest drummer, Billy Cobham has dedicated his whole life to musical exploration and creative expression. Throughout his career he has collaborated with artists like Miles Davis, Horace Silver, Airto Moreira, George Benson and appeared on over 300 recordings, including icons like Peter Gabriel, Quincy Jones, Jack Bruce, Bob Weir, and James Brown. Cobham’s dramatic, explosive power mixed with emotional spontaneity, extraordinary dexterity, and complex style of play brought him global attention and critical acclaim.  The first album ‘Spectrum’ is a masterpiece and still considered a reference album today. 

‘Drum’N Voice’ is a collaborative project with the Nicolosi family, known collectively as Novecento. After reaching the top of the European and American charts with their Italo Disco hits, they decided to explore new ideas and evolve their music leading to a jazz and ambient territory and collaborating with some incredible artists. 

The album, recorded between Milan, London, Los Angeles and New York, also feature collaborations with incredible artists like Eumir Deodato, Stanley Jordan, Frank Gambale, Gregg Kofi Brown, George Duke, Brian Auger, Bob Mintzer. Billy delivers an amazing creativity and listening experience that unveils its unique style in playing drums and percussions. 
The collection include amazing reworks from Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Danny Krivit, Folamour, S.A.M., Gerd Janson, Khidja, Boris Dlugosch & Cassara, Coeo and Lexx.

Vilnius-based label and platform Electric Shapes starts 2021 with the second volume of its acclaimed compilation series “Unreleased Territories”. Featuring an interesting selection of artists from all over the world, such as Jokios Kultūros, Kolomensky, Tassilo Vanhöfen, Facets, Fabio Me Llaman Soltero (SXDNS187), Neud Photo, Anastasia Zems (SXDNS169), Anatolian Weapons, Volta Cab, Wolfstream, and A-Tweed (SXDNS222), just to name a few, the release invites you to this true musical trip through the depths of this mesmerising concoction of sonorities. 

We have the privilege of reviewing the contribution of one of our favourite producers: Ukrainian Volta Cab, currently based in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is acclaimed not only for his productions but also his live sets. His many an influence allows him to competently flirt with several music genres. This time, he decided to go for something more cosmic and trippier. The melodic bell-like lead allied with the atmospheric pads and the arpeggiated synth layer provided a hell of a theme, definitely one of the highlights of the compilation.  

We finish the review with a beautiful message from the label team: “We really hope you enjoyed this musical trip through different parts of our magical planet. While we’re stuck inside during this crazy pandemic, we wish our music has helped you to escape, at least in your mind and soul. Stay healthy and stay alive!”
