 will likely be the first nation
 to disappear beneath the waves.
 Kiribati next.
 But we’re not keeping score, are we?
Tuvaluvians
 don’t talk about belly-star tattoos.
 They talk about the tides.
 The rise.
 The leaving.
The new language is
 relocation plans.
 cultural preservation.
 Neatly folded futures
 packed into waterproof boxes.
But waves don’t sign documents.
 Salt doesn’t care what it dissolves.
 The highest point?
 Four point six meters.
 Fifteen feet.
 The size of a story.
 A single tree.
 A final breath
 before the sea takes it.
No rivers.
 No lakes.
 Just the rain—
 caught in cisterns,
 held like a held breath,
 hoping it’s enough
 to last.
Still—
 they wear the best teugas.
 From the finest pandanus.
 Still beauty.
 Still pride.
 I met one once—
 Peekie, in a kiekie.
 Smiling like she knew the ocean
 by its first name.
The capital?
 Vaiaku.
 On Fongafale.
 Part of Funafuti.
 Names like seashells—
 smooth, beautiful,
 washed
 far from where they began.
Used to be called
 the Ellice Islands.
 Before Britain.
 Before the maps
 decided what belonged
 and what could vanish.
Now,
 as I write this,
 I keep thinking:
When it’s gone—
 when they are gone—
 who will know?
Who remembers
 a shallow spot on the ocean
 as a country?
 A culture?
 A people
 whose names we only practiced
 on borrowed breath?
The first to go.

the lyrics: ransom and I started out with random fragments of phonemes that solidfied into several iterations of lyrics. the version of the  lyrics sounded out here is composed by RANSOM AND THE MOOD and somewhat inspired by me.
the sounds: the basic song was created by RANSOM and I picked up on his cues and did my best to develop them further.
