While Los Angeles mixed-media artist Celia Hollander is preparing her full-length album drop for Q2, Leaving Records presents the first tease from forthcoming Timekeeper.

Timekeeper is a collection of temporal impressions. Each track is entitled with a time of day, mapping the ways that changes in energy and emotion form a continuously shifting sense of time. Using a palette of acoustic recordings and digital synthesis, each piece depicts either a temporal field (expansive, unpredictable), wave (swelling momentums) or rope (singular linearity).

This is my entry for the 97th Disquiet Junto project, where we were asked to take an 80-character excerpt from a book we're reading, transform it into a melodic line based on some simple rules, and make a short track out of it.

I'm currently reading Thomas Pynchon's novel "Bleeding Edge", so I used that as my source. The excerpt  (including the terminal comma) was: "a gong from a hitherto-unreleased Fu Manchu movie goes off, abrupt and strident,".

I mapped the derived melody to La Monte Young's Well-Tuned Piano tuning, which is in just intonation. The piece consists of eight simultaneous renditions of the melody, played twice. The first time through, the eight lines are played at the same speed but with slight offsets in time, creating a rhythmic echo/tremolo effect. The second time, they repeat starting with the same offsets, but lines two through eight are each scaled slightly differently so that by the end, they converge on unison.

I made the piece entirely with Csound, using Steven Yi's graphical composition environment blue. The instrument I used is called "Sine modulo pluck" and was designed by Mark Van Peteghem for use within blue.

Glitch for Variable and Determinate States

Glitch for Variable and Determinate States started out as a Midi recording of Rebekkah Palov’s Yamaha DX21 keyboard. With no audio output from the synth, Palov performed an improvisation according to a clock score she had written.

She limited the piece to seven notes because the piece was then transcribed into a video switcher program for a seven channel video piece. During the timed periods, Palov would play the seven notes either in a line along the keyboard or in multiple keys played in masses. The data of this recording was then printed out on 102 pages, which was then entered into an 80’s computer video switcher which ran seven TV’s which were visually switching/playing the seven notes. These 102 pages were then reinterpreted as a text and drawing volume (edition of 18). In penmanship on the printout page of midi data, are three sentences: “I am in love,” “Home is a tangible,” “The sublime is not a faker.” Separating these sentences are pages of drawings, comprising around 30 pages for each sentence. Lastly, the midi data was used to control playback of sample-recordings of tube TV’s turning off and on. While this is the two channel version, it is also intended for seven channels.

Palov’s hope is that the piece opens to many interpretations including those concerned with contemporary multimedia mashups of image, text, audio, and video in internet activities and how to navigate these mediums in artistic practice. She also intends to incite new thinking about the rigor of historical protocols that regulate cursive penmanship and Western keyboards, the loneliness of conditional statements, and the pleasure of music.
