I know I have been quiet for 2 years, and I apologize for that. I have had to take a step back from everything, and really evaluate who I am, what I'm doing, and why I'm doing it. Authenticity is very important to me as an artist, and due to a combination of factors, I kept finding it harder and harder to represent the ideas I was turning into sound authentically. A loss of self identity will do that I suppose. 

In addition, there is a change which occurs when you develop an audience, a different calculus which emerges somewhere between the thought "I wonder if anyone will hear or relate to this representation of me" and the thought "thousands of people will hear this, and at least some of those people will relate to it" which really fucks with the creative process. This was difficult. Another side of the calculus which manipulates the creative process is the drive to make it economically viable. When you are trying to pay your bills with your creative pursuits, there becomes a lot of pressure especially in the modern age. A level of constancy, of thematic coherence, of risk averse behavior begins to emerge when you're thinking "If people don't engage with this work, I might not be able to pay rent this month" and there almost isn't a way around this. We have to eat, and we have to have shelter. These are fundamental drives and it's very difficult when you've intertwined your capacity to eat with your drive to express yourself to divorce those things from each other. 

This was antithetical to my sense of authentic expression. Rather than just start to change my art for the sake of these goals, I had to take a thorough accounting of what art, the Mnemosyne project, its impact (intended and unconscious), and music as a whole meant to me. I decided to step back from the economic concerns, because I felt if I continued to press for them it would result in a less authentic expression and that to me was unconscionable. I decided to get back to when I was young and playing piano because it was the only way to express myself, this communion with self through an external medium. To explore myself and my relation with existence with sound as the intermediary. 

I have not abandoned, however, you. The people who engage with my work for your myriad reasons and in your myriad ways. I could have stayed forever making music by myself for myself. Playing piano to an audience of myself and whatever awareness existence may possess. I started to post my music here because I felt I had something to say, I felt perhaps these explorations would be useful to others. This is still important to me, essential even in terms of how I want to affect this world. I hope beyond hope that what I say and what you hear is impactful, that it leads to a better life for you, and a better world likewise. I would rather make that impact than try to force myself to pay bills with that expression. What a cheapening it would be to sacrifice that authenticity for something so base.

As such, I took time and space to create the necessary perspective. To reformulate my life, my world, in order to ensure that I continue to make the impacts that are important to me. More Mnemosyne is on the horizon, much music has continued to be made, albeit much of it will remain my conversations with myself, much of it is also things I want desperately to share. I have found again my purpose in sharing music with you all, and I continue to make one promise to you: that I will never allow anything to stand in the way of my artistic integrity, no matter how convenient it would be. Transformation is a difficult process, but a necessary one. Sometimes it requires that we part ways with things we are invested in, that we have invested into our senses of self.
