Miguel Campbell is a burgeoning young star that shot to notoriety in 2011 after ‘Something Special’, his debut release on Hot Creations became one of the biggest tracks of the year. 

This was a big intro for a young guy from the north of England but one year on and he proves that was just the tip of the iceberg as his debut album, the superbly crafted and pop infused ‘Back In Flight School’ reignites even more cross genre potential as Campbell explores where the highs of house meets the depths of soulful funk and disco nostalgia.

Set to put Miguel back in the end of year charts for a second year running, ‘Back In Flight School’ is a smooth and addictive ride that’s rich in harmonies and contagious bass-lines. This thoughtfully executed and consistent combination from the opening title track to the closing moments leaves you feeling warm inside.

“The aviation theme was inspired by the old 'in Flight' ethos of Funk,” explains Miguel, ”along with the amount of time I have spent on airplanes over the last year.” Despite his rapid rise to success Miguel has not forgotten his roots. Within his music you can feel the romanticism of French touch, cheekiness of P-Funk and the energy of 80s pop idols Michael Jackson culminating in a sound that is as appealing if you’re a man or woman.

Campbell’s dextrous use of vocals add an extra dimension, from the vocoder Daft Punk style rapping of ‘Rockin Beats’ to the warm feminine touch of ‘Not That Kind Of Girl’, an anthemic addition, his tracks are full bodied and set to lead a long shelf life.

The filtered disco intros of the album are hypnotic and twinkle with disco nostalgia. Taking the best effect in the seductive ‘Night Mode’ and equally charming ‘Sky Mode’, these final tracks relax in pace but are perhaps the strongest of the collection. As with all great producers, the seeds he plants early taste best as they bloom.

“My main goal was to create a musical tale for the listener to enjoy, with a start middle and end which would encompass the various styles of house and funk I have produced over the years and display the various types of instrumentation that I use.”
If there’s one word to sum up Miguel Campbell it’s authentic. He never compromised on his style, spending years practising all day, every day to sculpt his own fresh take on a sound heavy in nostalgia. His patience paid off at WMC 2010 when Jamie Jones heard ‘Something Special’. His release came in the year that Jones’ label Hot Creations were on top for championing a sound that Miguel was already a master of.

Up to that point Miguel had been building his own Outcross Records out of his Leeds base. Together with Matt Hughes he also forms MAM who have released a series of endearing edits on the likes of Wolf + Lamb’s Black edits label and FINA, the offshoot from 2020 Recordings. Hughes also produced the album that features vocals from Campbell’s friends and local talent Becks Lott, Naroe, Olly Smith, Alex Mills and Ninjitsu.

Label de jour Hot Creations are entering a new chapter as they launch the first in a line of albums on the imprint, with follow ups planned from Hot Natured and Lee Foss in 2013.

Inspired by a family of record collectors, Miguel’s passion for music was ignited early. His earliest affairs were with hip-hop through Cypress Hill and Digital Underground and his earliest memory is a visiting a record shop with his parents to purchase a 7-inch from Musical Youth.

“My family have really supported my movement and I feel so proud to be able to fulfill my promise of paying them back for all they have done for me. My mum now realises that the "BANG - Bang - BANG " sound is actually a viable career path and not just some whacky dream that I have. I also find peace in the fact that my father can now look down on me and feel proud of where I have taken this music game we used to play.”

The soft and steady approach Miguel Campbell took is a clear message to the younger generation to stay true to what you believe in. His dedication and commitment have shaped him into a genuine role model from the future.


09. Beams Of Light

Label head Lee Foss calls upon No.1 American house producer MK to collaborate on this knock out release, featuring the stunning voice of L.A’s Anabel Englund. On the flip Lee goes solo to deliver two solid tracks like only he can.

The high voltage ‘Electricity’ kicks things off with the sensational voice of Anabel Englund leading the way. The deep, slow grooves ride effortlessly through the track with a breath-taking break down filled with electric bolts and melodic synth keys.

‘Goodnight Moon’ is the second on offer from Lee and Marc and boasts a heavy bass, beautiful synths patterns and infectious groove. The atmosphere in the track is filled withlayers of intricate percussions and luscious melodies, while the interesting vocals make this really stand out from the rest.

Over on the B-side Lee takes the reins with ‘Could Be’, effortlessly swarming the mind with soaring synths, soft R n’B style vocals and lo-slung driving bass lines, while the trippy keys are destined to hypnotize you on the dancefloor. Rounding off ‘B5 The Drinks’ is aimed straight at the dancefloor. Packed full of groove with an intoxicating bassline, the high-pitched warbling keys, vocals and crowd noises add a new dimension and make this a real party track.

Marc Kinchen aka MK is an undeniable legend when it comes to house music. Not only has he been on the scene for over 20 years but he created a whole new sound with huge releases such as ‘Burning’ on Area 10 and ‘Always feat. Alana’ on Union City Recordings. The past few years have seen MK remix artists such as Ellie Goulding and Lana Del Ray with releases and remixes on high profiles labels including his huge remix of Amirali’s ‘Just An Illusion on the mighty Crosstown Rebels. His remix of the unforgettable ‘Forward Motion’ is also due to be released on Hot Creations next week, which is the reason Lee and Marc came to work together. Lee Foss, member of Hot Natured, is amongst those that pioneered the sound that’s is dominating the electronic music scene today. There is no doubt that this collaboration would be one to shout about!

The A side features Leed’s legend Buckley combing with Ives St. Ange on vocals to produce the most infectious slice of genre defying hip-house you’ll this year, ridiculously hooky you’ll be humming it until summer.. woot woot! Buckley shares the A side with house stalwarts Simon Baker and Rob James as they combine with England Brooks to deliver a slice of hot house pie best served straight up… no chaser!

On the flip and hot on the heels of the huge ‘Pain ‘n’ Love’ EP released on Hot Creations early in 2012, HNQO team up with Bip for the hotly anticipated ‘City Lights’. Already highly sought after and heavily championed this is another sure-fire hit from Henrique. Finally Tom Ruijg produces a dirty jacking, break beat colossus of a track, ‘S For Sticky’ is another absolute killer to round off this fantastic double pack.

Treating the Hot Creations imprint to a dose of pure and unadulterated house, the rising partnership of Darius Syrossian & Hector Couto deliver a 4-tracker of Chicago bumpin’ rowdyness. Big, bad and heavy basslines are the order of the day and forthcoming EP ‘Who’s The Douche?’ is guaranteed to destroy the dancefloor.

Darius Syrossian was crowned DJ Mag’s Best British Breakthrough producer of 2012 and has been blowing up with big releases on VIVa music, OFF Recordings and Get Physical. A strong advocate for “True House Music”, Leeds based Darius is a core artist in Steve Lawler’s VIVa music family, runs his own record label and is a monthly resident at Sankeys Nightclub in Manchester. Darius recently remixed the Freaks for Hot Creations to great effect

Young Spanish talent Hector Couto is another VIVa music family member also with releases on Saved Records, his own imprint Pura Music and now set for major success with Darius on Hot Creations. Hector was one of Resident Advisor’s top 100 charted producers in 2011 and was nominated for DJ awards in Deejay and Vicious Mag.

After four outstanding various artist releases, Hot Creations off­shoot Hot Waves is back with it’s first full artist release ‘It’s Over’ from Bristol sensation Waifs & Strays aka Amos Nelson and Rich Beanland. Jamie Jones and Lee Foss first snapped up the talented producers in 2011 with ‘Body Shiver’ for Hot Creations. This time they deliver two dancefloor weapons with infectious vocals and bouncing basslines just in time for summer sun.

In 2010 their debut release ‘3am’ on Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom imprint set the benchmark high for future success; featuring in DJ Mag’s essential releases, and picking up props from major players including Luciano, DJ T, Anja Schneider, dOP, Danny Tenaglia and Laurent Garnier.

The follow­up record ‘Yeah Yeah’, gathered significant international support following its debut at Detroit Music Conference, smashing dancefloors from Fabric to Watergate.
o+o Since then the pair have released records on Leftroom, Resonance, Futureboogie and Dirtybird, with support from Pete Tong in the form of Essential New Contender and another Essential New Tune in the form of ‘I Saw Yo Girl’, released at the beginning of 2013.

2013 sees Waifs & Strays continue a relentless schedule of touring and producing with tours planned for Australia and the Americas, and a number of releases on the way.
