Causality Mix - Atmospheric Jungle & DnB - June 2022

To mark the pending release of my upcoming joint EP with Mineral (forthcoming on Omni Music on 28th August, here's my 'Helsinki to Hampshire') mix.  The mix includes all 4 tracks from the EP, alongside my forthcoming remixes of Synthforce and InTake for Default Recordings, a first play for my remix of Woken Balance's track 'Andromeda' (forthcoming on Metius Music), and my solo track Like Minds (Out now on the fantastic Sonic Landscapes compilation on EC Underground).

The first part of the mix focusses on cinematic dancefloor sounds / atmospheric and jungle, and then things switch towards a jazzier direction for a bit towards the end, including a sneak peek of a joint track with my Codename: Amen co-owner Rome. 

You can catch Mineral, Rome and I all playing in Southampton at Codename: Amen on 1st October 2022, with Dead Man's Chest headlining - hopefully see you there!

The year is 2077. Society has collapsed under the control of a brutal dictatorship. The UK is a military state and all uprisings are suppressed. But one last bastion of resistance remains…through a network of squat raves and free parties…the Night Ravers Control The Underground.

‘The Night Ravers’ is the first release on Codename: RCRDS, the new label from Southampton-based jungle, 160 and atmospheric crew Codename: Amen. The release and label channel the energy of the 90’s rave era, pushing the sound forward into exciting new directions for 2023.

Moakz’s original mix marks a movement away from his previous atmospheric and jazz jungle releases, and towards his hardcore roots. Now complemented by storming remixes from the incredible RAVETRX (HooverSound, forthcoming Club Glow), Jon Tetly then delivers a tearout Amen rework, and the release closes out with the superbly talented NonRev and rising star Cold Leader delivering innovative reworks, with this EP provides a marker of intent for the label and collective artists.

Future releases on Codename: RCRDS will continue to mine the Jungle / Hardcore / 160 and Atmospheric continuums, via a series of various artist releases commencing from May 2023.

Label co-owner Moakz returns to Codename: RCRDS - ‘Another Dream EP’, the sixth release on Codename: RCRDS, the new label from Southampton-based jungle, 160 and atmospheric crew Codename: Amen.  The release and label channel the energy of the 90’s rave era, pushing the sound forward into exciting new directions for 2023.   

 ‘Another Dream EP’ marks another flip up in style for this versatile artist, this time focussing on jungle and hardcore-influenced stylings.  The EP opens with the tribal ‘Howler Monkey (Another Dream)’, a feverish and mystical stepper straight out of the Amazon, where Think breaks collide with tribal drums, booming sub bass and eerie chanting vocals.

Joint label owner and long-time friend Rome joins Moakz for his first release on the label ‘Cosmic Explosion’, flipping things into a different direction again, full of deep and dubby organic goodness, with rumbling reeces, brass stabs, strings and metallic tones keeping things rolling nicely.

The EP continues with ‘Back To The Earth’, with Moakz once again stepping things out with a deep vibe, as soulful vocals cry “Who’s To Blame?” whilst powerful drums criss-cross with technical malfunctions.

Things draw to a close with the post-hardcore vibes of ‘Gotta Take It Easy’, which mashes cinematic strings, haunting vocals, 303s, gorgeous rhodes, dubby bass and rolling breaks into an inventive closure to the EP.

Courtesy of Moakz, it’s an absolutely stunning 100 minute exploration and celebration of jungle music’s most timeless, emotional, musical, soulful and dynamic parameters qualities.

At points bone-shaking, at others soul-quaking and forever peppered with exclusive forthcoming tracks; It all comes from one label: Codename : RCRDS.  

Co-founded and run by Moakz alongside fellow Southampton junglist Chiron, the label was born through their club nights Codename : AMEN. The label only launched in April 2023. yet, as both their catalogue and this mix shows, they’ve already curated a remarkable wealth of contemporary, forward-thinking jungle… Including their first VA album which dropped last Friday March 15.

Entitled Look To The Future Vol 1, it’s a 10 track trip into jungle’s most futuristic motifs and characteristics from some of the label’s key artists and peers. Arcologies, Con-Figure, Digital Altair, Eschaton, Fortune & Chance, Marc OFX, Mineral, Moakz, NonRev, Wez Walker, Perpsective R and Trident all feature on the album as the Codename crew unite to hard salute the atmospheric legacy and influence of imprints such as Good Looking Records while still keeping firm eyes on what’s ahead.

Codename: RCRDS are proud to present the fifth in a series of limited edition 10" lathe cut dubplates.

Moakz re-teams with fellow south-coaster Rome for 'Queen Of The Rasp', fresh, soulful and 100% ready for summer dancefloors, the release is complemented by a stunning rework from Brownville's own Krugah, who brings his unique choppage to Codename for the first time.

The Codename: RCRDS Broken trilogy concludes with ‘Broken Planet EP’, offering up four jungle bangers with a wide variety of influences.   The EP opens with Mineral’s monster ‘Underground Mentality’, precision primed to tear up dancefloors with its heady mix of distorted reeces, chopped breaks and ravey stabs.

Label debutant Charla Green switches things into a different direction with the stunning ‘No Stress’, a deep rolling summer-inflected vocal number which showcases this fast-rising artists talent’s beautifully.

Another debut joins the party as Toni Bassi drops the rolling footwork / juke of ‘Junak’, where mystical vocals combine with warped bass stabs and hypnotic riffs for a refreshingly modern vibe.

The EP closes with DJ Junk and Moakz’s collaboration ‘Illustrious Ideology’, where a seductive intro gives way to dark atmospherics and tearing synths to close the EP on a high.

CODERCRDS022 - Broken Planet EP (Clips) (Out 03/05/24)

Label co-owner Moakz returns to Codename: RCRDS with Lunatic Age EP, featuring a select of uniquely styled dancefloor bangers which have been featuring heavily in his sets over the past few months, complemented by three storming remixes from some of the most talented artists currently at work in the scene.

The EP opens with the prophetic title track ‘Lunatic Age’, a hybrid of atmospheric synths, electrostep and jungle with a warning message which feels unnervingly prescient in light of current world events. ‘A Dark Future’ flips 4x4 beats into a deep atmospheric direction as its vocals muse on the dystopian influences of the roots of jungle and techno, before Mineral contributes his stunningly brutal rework of the same track, flipping intelligently between introspective moments and tearout drops.

The 2nd half of the release brings the well titled ‘Calm Before The Storm’, with hypnotic synth lines and rolling drums building things towards a crescendo before the track locks firmly into the groove with a rumbling bass that continually pushes things forward. Code Of Silence provides his signature tearing amen drum work to his rework of ‘Lunatic Age’, bringing the hardcore elements to the fore and adding an extra vocal for good measure. Last up is man of the moment Neekeetone’s vibrant remix of ‘Back To The Earth’, where warped basses and trademark precision break choppage escalate the original to fresh new heights.

Data B makes his Codename: RCRDS debut with 'Deep Reflections EP', which provides a stunning showcase of this rising producers talents.

The EP opens with 'Elsewhere', a euphoric collaboration with label co-owner Moakz with spine-tingling pads and soaring leads entwined with rolling breaks and bass for a superb opener. The EP continues with the deep liquid roller 'Wakeup', full of crisp drums and chopped vocals, before moving into the glacial-tinged beauty of 'Change Your Mind'. This echoes the work of masters such as LSB with its introspective vocals, stunning strings and plucked guitars. The release then switches into another direction to close the EP for the crusty breaks and eerie vocals of the rolling 'Broken Window'.

A prolific BBC Introducing featured producer with releases over the past two years on Soul Deep, Omni Music, Liquid Drops, Default Recordings, 1 More Thing, EC Underground, and his own imprint Codename: RCRDS, Moakz (Jon) has been DJing and crate digging since his teens, and was resident and promoter for the highly regarded Offshore & Toast events in Southampton during the mid-late 90's and early 00's, and was also an old-skool hardcore resident for Adrenalin during the same period, also playing at numerous other events and free parties during this period.  He subsequently co-produced and released several Nu-Skool Breaks tracks and remixes under the pseudonym Mobius on Ape Records, Dusted Breaks, VIM Records and Yellow Finger.

Jon is also a co-owner and resident of Codename: Amen, a Southampton-based event focussing on modern and classic Jungle, 160, Breakbeats, Hardcore and Atmospheric DnB / Jungle.
