TB Premiere: WLAD - Tribute To Chicago [House Puff Records]

Bamboleo Records opens its 2022 account with a stunning three-track composition from Parisian producer and hedZup label boss WLAD - as he delivers his 'Gym Tonic' EP.

WLAD makes his Bamboleo debut this January with a collection of three freshly-squeezed works - showcasing his unparalleled and genre-inspired sound, rhythmic prowess and melodic flare - all of which are rife in his latest EP.

Opening the release, 'Gym Tonic' dives straight weighty drums and intricate layers of percussion marry up with a rich and hooky bassline whilst warm keys and bright pads bring more energy and movement to the mix, carving out a deep and bumpy basement track loaded with soul and flavour.

Next up, 'Chardonnay' takes on a more attitude-laden approach. Building around a jacking groove, its seemingly endless levels of instrumental programming give it a quirky character and a larger than life character. Focusing on rawer sounds - its dominant sub-bass paves the way for a flurry of interesting tonal components - all with a subtle lick of jazz.

'Doctor Flavor' completes the EP, signing off with another delightfully danceable club cut. Swinging drums and offbeat fills offer the perfect strike partner for a catchy analogue bassline and long sweeping pads, dissected with constant injections of soft synth notes.

The latest Neverdogs' offering marks the twentieth body of work to land on their increasingly popular Bamboleo Records imprint, with the duo returning to their spiritual home to unveil an immersive four-track EP.

Beginning with the title track, 'Feeling Something' flies straight out of the gate with bumpy grooves and a catchy bassline whilst Magaziine's hypnotic vocal topline steers the mix.

'Hoover' comes next, keeping the swinging underground flavours at a premium with more jackin' drums, crisp percussive flair and gritty melodies from end to end.

The on-trend sounds of 'Tamarindo' features velvety Deep House vibes with a wave of bright harmonies alongside sultry vocal shots and more well-structured & explicitly danceable drum work.

'Pura Vida' brings the release to a close with upbeat rhythms from the outset, carving out a perpetual subterranean wobbler with endless layers of individual movement and dreamy notes.

The morning was crisp and clear. The Hague was only just beginning to stir, but someone had already found their rhythm. Plate had a list of addresses saved in his notes — potential spots for their future vinyl store. Real plans, of course, called for a bit of luck and beautiful views: linden trees whispering along the canals, a sea breeze full of encouragement, distant seagull calls, and the soft clang of trams.

First stop: Denneweg — a street that felt like a page from a design magazine, nothing but showrooms, galleries, antiques, and wine. A realtor in a light shirt was already waiting by the door of a former barbershop: a clean rectangular space with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows. Great foot traffic. A storefront that seemed to come alive in front of the observer’s eyes. Plate could already hear the music playing, see visitors flipping through records in search of something unique.

Next came Papestraat — louder, and somehow closer to heart. A three-story building next to the city’s best coffee spot. Until recently, it had housed a small shop of handmade goods. It was the kind of place you could work, drink tea, and build a little corner lined with shelves and turntables in. The classic Dutch staircase alone was enough to inspire joy.

The day hadn’t gone in vain. Plate came home with photos of two key locations. One looked like an album cover, the other like a B-side you want to play over and over again. Needle smiled at what she saw. Somewhere between those two streets, their next chapter was quietly going underway.

All three tracks on this EP were actually made for the Âme live show, but at the end it turned out that we used them in our DJ sets too. 
Due to the great feedback we decided to put them on a 12-inch accompanying the Âme Live CD. Karl Hyde and James Lavelle on one 12-inch should be something for a lad's paradise and even 'Enoi' sounds brighter than before.

‘Camargue’ gets a fresh treatment on Drumcode, as a handful of techno’s finest give new life to an R&S classic. 

Coming from the studio of CJ Bolland and Portuguese journeyman The Advent, the track was born out of a golden age of Belgium dance music and first released in 1992. It stands as one of the most treasured pieces of vinyl in Adam Beyer’s collection and this six-part compilation of remixes and remakes marks a highpoint in Drumcode’s history. 

The package consists of a punchy pin-sharp 2019 version of the original, as CJ Bolland and The Advent polish the edges of their time-honoured rave favourite. Maceo Plex makes his return to DC after 2014’s ‘Conjure Dreams’ and his is a bustling industrial take, with distorted vox that gives way to sheaths of stirring melody, before the spine-tingling chords enter the fore and the cut drops into broken beats. Vintage Maceo. Enrico Sangiuliano delivers a trademark cosmic rework underlined by tribal bass stabs and twisted synth lines to accompany the famous riff. It’s an outstanding remake that’s already a big summer favourite for the Drumcode crew. Adam Beyer and Layton Giordani team up with their own groove-injected, future-focused adaption, all the while never losing sight of the misty-eyed spirit of the original. In contrast to the peak-time prowess of the other respective versions, rising Dutch talent Keith Carnal moulds a liquid smooth interpretation heavy on hypnosis and sparse drums. The Advent rounds out the package with his own fresh version, a whip-smart cut that chops and changes between pounding drums, dreamy synth interludes and warbled effects.
