Summertime, and the riddims are breezy. When the warm
weather heralds the arrival of festivals, carnivals and poolside
raving, it’s time to break out the new season’s collection
of beats. And, celebrating fifteen years deep in the game,
Technique Recordings are dropping a Summer Selection
album to soundtrack the sunshine properly. This first taste of
the album comes from label bosses Drumsound & Bassline
Smith who, judging by their show itinerary, know a thing or two about hyping a festival crowd.
It’s time for the ravers to raise up their hands immediately as Memories floats in. A rising chord structure delivered by a subtle combination of keys and pads provides a foundation for an elegantly percussive synth melody. Add in a ghostly vocal sample and this tune casually casts a cloud of euphoria over the party. The deal is sealed when the drop provides the weight of bubbling bass and effortlessly punchy drums to the mix. This is a tune that’s as uplifting in the midnight haze as it is under blue skies.
Then there’s a different mood for Primitive. Dramatic stabs kick a hole in the atmosphere, punctuating a pattern of ever-rising arpeggiation overlaid with a suspense-laden dialogue sample. And that’s just the intro, before sirens signal a build into a high-voltage drop made of a taut razor-wire bassline and uppercut-force kicks and snares. Rolling high-end percussion and those blockbuster synth-strikes keep the energy at IMAX dimensions. When it’s that time for the carnival crowd to properly let loose and go just a touch grimy, this is one to draw for.
So, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have shown us two angles on the sunlit rave experience. And with a decade and a half of experience feeding into the Summer Selection album, this is clearly just a small taste of what’s to come. Better grab your shades and your sunscreen, because Technique Recordings are about to light up the summer.

We worked really hard on all of the tracks on this EP, but this one especially took some serious ambition I believe, not to mention time. It also holds a lot of the past "signatures" of the Mantis sound. Its epic, cinematic, heavy, mean, etc. Not to say that the other tracks aren't lol, but this one especially speaks to our origins, therefore being especially close to us and something we are very proud of. And you can't deny the amazing words and flow of Maksim which improve this track loads."

The cover art proudly proclaims Technique's Summer 2016 album to be “100% Drum and Bass”. You might be forgiven for thinking that begs more questions that it answers. There's a huge breadth and versatility encompassed within the genre. So, you're left asking, what particular flavour of D&B are we talking about? Well, to answer your query, pretty much all of them.

Across thirty-seven tracks, Drumsound and Bassline Smith have assembled a cross-section of D&B that only has one thing in common: that summertime vibe. The label bosses themselves roll through with the fluid jungle of the Solah-laced “Cover Our Eyes”, the no-holds-barred funk of “Rise of the Black Panther” and their epic dubwise collaboration with Digital, “First World Problem”.

And then there are the big name cameos from artists not normally seen under the Technique banner. Brookes Brothers and Danny Byrd team up with the uplifting drive of “Climb High”, matched in hands-in-the-air power by the euphoric piano of The Prototypes' “Don't Let Me Go”. J Majik recruits 78° and Louie Cabrera for “Day I Left” and “Idcomercial” respectively. And the mighty DJ SS drops an emotively claustrophobic killer in the form of “Expression”.

Of course, the regular regiment of Technique soldiers are present and correct too. Tantrum Desire delivers the tech atmospherics of “Tesoro”, while Kronology subverts the big-room sound with the unpredictable twists and turns of “Everyday”. L Plus backs up rumbling bass and popping beats with entwined chord patterns in “Invincible”. Plus Document One show two different sides to their character, with the jazzfunk vibe of “Klaxon” and the paranoid sci-fi of “Say What”.

And we're nowhere near covering everything this album has to offer. From the jungle tear-out of Brian Brainstorm's “Badman Selector” to the minimal magic of Oder's “Mesmerize”, via the liquid purity of Salaryman's “He Knows”, this is a journey that needs to be experienced. Any selection that takes you straight from Fade's “Disco Ball” into Conspire's “Glare of Brass” then to Salaryman's “Synthesized Melancholia” is making a statement about the strength in depth of the D&B genre right now.

It's all here. This is the whole summertime drum and bass experience cut up into thirty-seven expertly-formed slices which, taken together, represent the full spectrum of what the scene has to offer. It's as simple as that.

Ironically, given the fact that they've got “Tactics” in their name, Mob Tactics came about quite by chance.

Mark was producing as The Funktion, and Luke, in his role as label manager for RUN DNB, liked what he heard and signed some of his tracks. It became apparent that Mark and Luke's taste in music was ridiculously similar and, over the course of a few weekends, they decided to get in each others studios and see what happened.

What happened was “Gunjack” & “Stick-up Kid”, two tunes which would go on to be supported by some of the biggest deejays in the business, and become the first Mob Tactics release. That was back in 2010 and, in the intervening years, these two have seemingly never let the momentum drop for a moment.

Early releases on Mob Tactics' own Tactical Recordings label, like “Kansas” and “Fugazi”, established their brand of drum & bass. Complex and technical, but with an irresistible edge of funk aimed straight at the dancefloor, no wonder they quickly caught the ear of the likes of Andy C, DJ Hype, Crissy Criss, and Chase & Status.

And these luminaries weren't just offering deejay support for Mob Tactics tunes, they wanted to sign them. DJ Hype's Playaz grabbed the massive Elephant Man collab “Crazy Hype”, Andy C secured “Wolf Trap” for the “Nightlife 6” compilation, and since then has come back for more several times. Eatbrain, MTA, C4C, Charge, Viper...the list of huge imprints who've wanted a taste of the Mob Tactics sound goes on.

Recent years have seen Mob Tactics revel in creative freedom. Releases like the “Body Check EP” and the Ryme Tyme-laced “Tweakers” have demonstrated multiple facets to their sound. Unconstrained by sub-genre limitations, the one thread that binds all their work is that commitment to making ravers move.

Anyone who's witnessed one of their blazing deejay sets anywhere around the globe will testify to the vibes and energy Mob Tactics bring to a dance. And, even since opening up their personal dub collection to the masses with their “Mob Vaults” releases on BandCamp, the amount of firepower they're packing on their USBs shows no sign of diminishing.

So, this is Mob Tactics. Signed and certified by some of the biggest deejays and labels in the scene, we've got a feeling they're just getting started...
