Ichihara Tayo-Jo (1776 – 1865) became a widow at 31, and for many years she had to take care of her family and business on her own. Tayo discovered haiku thanks to Ishii Ukoo, a local, accomplished haiku poet and friend of hers; she moved to Edo in 1823, where she lived as a haiku master until her death.

The pipe organ is an instrument I've always been fascinated by. Recently I started to explore several types of organs for minimalist dronelike pieces of music. Because I didn't have the opportunity to travel to all these organs I am using the awesome virtual organs of the Virtual Organ Company. I tried to write music for the particular sound and sound possibilities of different pipe organs. In some cases I used electronics to shape the sound of the organ, tools developed by Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris originally for musique concrète and sound design.

A re-amplification of the piece Kokytos for organ by Daniel Glaus.

“Kokytos” is part of a series of organ improvisations that were recorded with a wide range of microphones placed both inside and around the instrument. This assignment will build on Glaus’ work and take it a step further.  

The Assignement:  
Re-amplify the recording, or elements of it, by playing “Kokytos” back over a loudspeaker. Use the pool of sounds resulting from the step before and compose a piece of your own, perhaps adding further sonic treatment.  

I stayed with the original piece, no further compositions.  

But I emphasized and re-amplfied the Kokytos, taking into account these five semantic axis:
- the pipe as long resonant space (speaker to a cardboard-pipe)
- the wind (speaker near to a ventilator)
- the air (speaker in distance to microphone)
- the transcendent (dry signal through a eg&g 5208 Lock-in-Filter, no reference-signal)
- the ear (speaker through the drum of my drum kit)

Autumn is my favorite season. The air is cooler, the sky is bluer, the clouds are fewer, and the colors are anything but demure. It's a time when Mother Earth uncorks and pours out her secrets in a grand display for all who cherish beauty. It's a time to give thanks for her ripened fruits that sustain us while she cleanses her skin with snow and replenishes her soul with humility. Just before the last leaf falls and the trees prepare to sleep, I say a quiet prayer of faith and bid her fare thee well.
