Operationalizing AV Safety with Nat Beuse, Aurora (TRB ARTS 2023)

American roads are becoming more dangerous for everyone – especially those traveling on foot, in a wheelchair, and on a bike. Jonathan Adkins, CEO of the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), joined us to discuss the need for widespread adoption of the Safe System Approach, putting Vision Zero into action, the greater risks that larger vehicle designs pose to vulnerable road users, and why Al Roker, one of America's favorite TV personalities, has become a champion for walking. 

We interviewed Jonathan ahead of GHSA's Annual Meeting in New York City from August 13-16, so we were also able to get a sneak peek at the safety topics that will be discussed at the conference.

In this episode, we explored...
- The national challenge of improving traffic safety. The U.S. finally has a national goal of zero traffic deaths through the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Roadway Safety Strategy – but in the same year that was released, we hit a 16-year high in traffic deaths. Fatalities have exceeded 40,000 for the past two years, reaching levels we haven't seen since before the Great Recession.

The Safe System Approach & Putting Vision Zero Into Action - Jonathan Adkins, GHSA

One highlight of ARTS 2023 was when Chris Gerdes intentionally made the audience groan by displaying a slide that mentioned the infamous Trolley Car Problem – before making it right by presenting a commonsense framework for determining the roadworthiness and safety of AVs.

Chris is teaching the next generation of transportation tech professionals about ethics and equity of transportation systems. He’s a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, as well as a former director and co-founder of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (also known as CARS). Chris was also the first Chief Innovation Officer in the U.S. Department of Transportation under the Obama Administration.

How do drivers react to ADAS features in their vehicles today? How many drivers know the limitations of technologies that are supposedly as simple as blind spot warnings in their vehicles? SAFE Greg and Pete explored these questions at AVS 2019 with Dr. David Yang, Executive Director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. 

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety was founded in 1947 as a not-for-profit research and education organization focused on saving lives through preventing traffic collisions and reducing injuries when crashes do occur. Dr. Yang chatted with us about some of the fascinating research they are undertaking across four priority areas: driver behavior and performance, emerging technologies, roadway systems and drivers, and vulnerable road users.

#052: Dr. David Yang, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (at AVS 19)

In our final recording from AVS 2019 we were joined once again by Avery Ash, Head of Autonomous Mobility at INRIX, to talk about the expansion of INRIX’s Road Rules Platform in July. Last year, INRIX debuted its AV Road Rules solution to help cities with cataloging, validating, and managing traffic rules for AVs on public roads. Their latest expansion provides functionalities that enable cities to incorporate loading zones and parking restrictions for TNCs (SUM Zones, anyone?), dockless bike/scooter zones, and other infrastructure like EV charging stations and fire hydrants.

In recent years, the mobility space has been flooded with conferences chock-full of buzzwords and “thought leaders” – but SAE has launched a new conference, Innovations in Mobility, that they say will do something different. By bringing together the technical experts who are actually working on promising transportation technologies with the visionaries who are advancing them in business and policy, SAE hopes to build out a conference that is a mile wide, and a mile deep. Greg Rogers (SAFE Greg) is at Innovations in Mobility this week for a series of interviews with some of the expert speakers – he was joined by Dave Weil and Frank Bokulich of SAE International for a sneak peak of the conference and a discussion of how SAE is fostering new connections between professionals across the transportation sector.

In our first recording with a live (and sometimes lively) studio audience, Sabrina Sussman from Zipcar at Transportation Camp DC 2020. Sabrina joined us for a discussion of how Zipcar, which is now celebrating its 20th anniversary, is bridging specific gaps in transportation and giving people an option beyond owning a car. 

Afterwards, we jumped into a great discussion with the audience about USDOT’s latest AV policy document (AV 4.0), land use, and the importance of community-focused transportation policies.

This month, NHTSA approved the first-ever exemption of a fully autonomous vehicle from three specific federal motor vehicle safety standards that were clearly unnecessary for a driverless vehicle carrying goods (windshields, mirrors, and rear-facing cameras). David Estrada, Chief Legal and Policy Officer at Nuro, to talk about how the company navigated the exemption process, the future of driverless deliveries, and a discussion of how to modernize the regulatory framework to enable newer and safer vehicle form factors.
