SOS Colombia V​/​A Part I: Against the violation of Human Rights

Since April 28, Colombia entered into a national strike catalyzed by a new tax reform in the midst of a brutal economic and social crisis exacerbated by the pandemic. The government tried to shift the burden of tax collection back to the middle and lower classes. Parallel to the peaceful protests, there are organized groups of criminals using the protests to incite violence and even attacking other neighborhoods. The police and military forces executed hundreds of violent acts in the demonstrations and peaceful protests that still continue and that leave to date (8.05.2021) according to Human Rights International, 43 assassinations, 105 disappeared, 160 attacks medical missions, 160 detainees, 1330 wounded and 6 cases of sexual violence. 

While this oppression is at its peak by the police and ESMAD, it is not new. Colombia is a country marked by inequality, corruption and systematic violence against the people through neoliberal policies, drug trafficking and elite mass media that manipulate and hide the truth. In a country where education and health are privileges, where opportunities are utopias and the future seems to be cancelled, people go out, people march, people are angry, people can't take it anymore. They want justice among the cases of police violence, the possibility to live with dignity (free education, accessible health system) and to live in a society in peace.

Aligned with this feeling, multiple collectives and agents of the Colombian and international culture and scene decided to unite and contribute with our art to help the victims of this oppressive government, to amplify and denounce the police barbarism and to raise our voice and resist through our art. SOS Colombia is a fist up, a cry that today becomes a collective action of musicians and visual artists presented in a compilation of techno and experimental music and also short documentaries that will expose to the world how an extreme right-wing government massacres and silences its people.

"Against the violations of human rights" , "In the absence and violence of the state. The people unite and self-manage" and "Dignity, Justice and Peace" will be the three parts of this compilation that will raise funds to give to several verified human rights organizations and self-managed initiatives that are working with the most affected populations of this crisis, that are holding the statistics of police violence and are supporting the invaluable work of the front lines in Cali, Bogota, Medellin.

Matt Relton, aka. Kidnap Kid’s music career started strong rather early: he must have been the only university student to ever have won the iTunes ‘Best Electronic Song’ in 2012 for his release ‘Vehl’ and went on to be the only postgraduate on tour with TEED and Disclosure the following year on a national ‘Hype Envoy’ tour of the United States.

His stamp onto the electronic music scene continued last year with the release of ‘Stronger’ – a club-orientated track that stood apart from its vocal-led predecessors. It opened him up to a world of new audiences as well as gaining strong support from the tastemaker cognescenti Pete Tong and Sasha. New music coming this year continues with the same style and focus, showcasing the darker, sleeker end of his dance-floor ready output.

Extensive touring in 2015 has already included multiple weeks across America, Canada and Mexico for BPM Festival, shows in Puerto Rico as well as the infamous Holy Ship. Add that to major sets at Glastonbury and Coachella, Kidnap Kid continues this spring with a solid month of US festival and club shows, rolling into a summer packed with Ibiza and European dates. One thing is for certain; the world’s clublands will be seeing a lot more of the Sheffield producer who remains one of the UK’s most successful exports.

When the Robot told me that she wanted me to play the sunrise set and that we will be connected with the Mayan Warrior soundsystem, I could feel it already in Berlin a full three weeks before… Then when I finally took the bus over to Robot Heart it was even better than in my craziest expectations. This gig was by far the most emotional gig I have ever played. The human body is the most highly engineered object in existence, a machine of uncountable parts and unfathomable function. Its workings have served as inspiration for all of humanity's greatest inventions. This work is an homage to the two most amazing mechanisms in that machine: the human eye and hand. The head is a 16 foot camera obscura demonstrating the ray optics principals underlying the spherical lensed eye humans posses and the hands are actuated mimicking the tendons and bones of the body. Together they represent what separates life from the rest of the universe, the ability to observe the world around us and manifest change in that world.
