The song ‘Lie Down In Darkness’ is named after a William Styron book, and the song, at least for me is a very emotional, sort of mournful, piece of symphonic, electronic music, my friend Joy Malcolm sings on it. 

Right before he died I got to hear William Styron speak at a Paris review dinner, he read from Lie Down In Darkness, I was watching him read and it was beautiful and emotional. I remember looking around to see if anyone else was having the same reaction I was having, and I looked around and it was all this jaded, cynical New Yorkers who were checking their blackberries or their iphones, and not paying attention. It made me so disappointed. I was thinking, here is William Styron, who is this remarkable writer and he is sort of bearing his soul and you could tell he didn’t have much longer to live and most of the people were not paying attention. But I feel really fortunate that I got to see him and meet him right before he died.

In celebration of 2013’s Record Store Day, moby and @MarkLanegan have collaborated on an exclusive track to be released as a limited edition 7” on 20th April. The Lonely Night 7” comes backed with a remix from electronic music legend @photek and is being released on moby’s own label Little Idiot. The track is also now available as a digital download and stream.

"i've been a fan of mark's from his early sst records days, and i've always wanted to work with him. he has one of the best and most distinctive voices of the last 25 years. now that we live near each other it ended up being really easy working on a song together."

moby on producing of The Lonely Night: 

“…And in producing the song, spike stent and i incorporated some very unusual production techniques... we ran all of the instruments through a distortion pedal into a guitar amp. so really there are only 3 tracks: left channel through a distortion pedal and guitar amp, right channel through a distortion pedal and guitar amp, and mark's vocals.  The end result is intentionally very broken and atmospheric."

Colin Rich a LA based director who specializes in time-lapse photography has been commissioned to shoot the video to accompany The Lonely Night.  The video features both moby and Mark Lanegan and flits between the desolate and far removed terrain of the Californian desert and the endless electric city expanse of Los Angeles. We have an interesting single in the shape of ‘Nothing to Give’. The record came about as a collaboration between hotly tipped Polish duo Rebeka and Lisbon disco don Mirror People and evolved into a record that sees the two acts each recording their own version of a single composition. An initial sharing of ideas and musical parts led to the development of new concepts and different directions laying the way for this unusual approach at 
a collaborative release and bring through two very different takes on things.

Rebeka is made up of charismatic vocalist Iwona Skwarek and talented producer Bartosz Szczesny; the pair have had quite a buzz around them, even prior to their superb debut ‘Stars’ on Discotexas last year. Mirror People AKA Rui Maia should need little introduction with a string of stellar releases for the likes of Permanent Vacation, Hands of Time and of course Discotexas.

The single opens with Rebeka’s version of ‘Nothing to Give’, a pulsing three and a half minute plus arrangement that puts Iwona’s emotive vocals at the heart of things with a stirring mix of pads, synths and bubbling bass working around her. The Mirror People version comes next with Rui taking things into extended 4/4 territory with a rolling disco take that brings a certain sunshine to this superb song.

This is an unusual and unique approach to collaboration that has yielded stunning results, enjoy!
