The Brothers Nylon is a transatlantic allstar project set out to make musical adventures. Mike and Nick Rufolo (from NY) collaborate with legendary producer Shawn Lee and Mighty Mocambos’ trombonist BGS (from LON) to create “cinematic type tuneage with the freedom to overdub whatever you want” – tracks were served up hot and fresh off the reel to reel, digitized, and sent across the pond. This tiger funk single features two edits of one musical suite, exclusive on this vinyl 45.

The Take Off (Part 1)

Ephemerals are a London based soul team featuring an allstar cast of musicians, founded and lead by producer Hillman Mondegreen (formerly of Hannah Wailliams & the Tastemakers). They are fronted by NYC-born singer Wolfgang Valbrun. Within only a couple of days, they recorded a stunning selection of songs to analogue tape that many critics dubbed as 'the best contemporary soul production' this side of the atlantic. The A-side 'Call It What You Want' is built around Valbrun's sincere vocals and a sinister soul groove that sounds like a lost Wu-Tang sample, the flip side "The Oligarch" showcases the band, letting loose on an organ- and horn-driven instrumental.

Armed with a voice "you just need to hear" (BBC London) and an irresistible blend of snaps, claps, and golden trumpet peals, Tara Priya combines vintage soul, poetic lyrics, and a dash of pop to provide relief from today's Auto-Tune avalanche. Sweet and sour, lovely and lovelorn, her story is as distinctive as her sound. "Sass'n'soul, little bitta Go-Go", says the San-Francisco-native about her music.

Things moved fast ever since Tara's first album on Japanese P-Vine Records was released in 2012 and made #2 on itunes charts. Tara moved to London recently and recorded new material with award-winning producer Steve Booker (responsible for Duffy's worldwide smash hit 'Mercy' and well-known for his work with John Newman, Lisa Marie Presley, Jamie Cullom, among others). "Who You Do" not only shows expertise in production that we haven't heard a while, the post-break-up song also gives way for Tara's distinctive voice and attitude. SPACE PATROL (“Raumpatrouille – Die phantastischen Abenteuer des Raumschiffes Orion”) was the first German science fiction television series. Its seven episodes were broadcast by ARD TV, the first episode being aired on September 17th of 1966. Being a huge success with audience ratings up to 56%, the series acquired a distinct cult status in Germany and worldwide.

Peter Thomas composed and recorded the original score, which has become a soundtrack classic and collector’s item among rare groove afficionados since its original release on Philips. The music, floating between avantgarde jazz, big band beat and spaced-out psychedelia, set a new benchmark in the history of film music and science fiction scores and became one of Thomas' best known works. The title theme is the first known piece of music in pop history to feature a vocoder, a device that until then had exclusively been used for voice encoding in military warfare. Peter Thomas borrowed a device from the Siemens factory to process his voice for the recording of the countdown.

The composer remembers: “When producing the score, I had complete creative freedom. No one had ever been into space, so no one would dare to tell me how the music should sound like.”

Now, 50 years on, The Mighty Mocambos teamed up with the legendary musical mastermind a recorded an up to date, truly global and funky 2016 version in tribute of the original theme. “Space Patrol (Raumpatrouille)” is the only official recording of the track released for this anniversary and authorized by Peter Thomas, who even plays on it himself. To give this 50 years version a new twist, the specially formed Mocambo Astronautic Sound Orchestra adds steel band orchestration to the massive brass and funky rhythm section.

Orion 2016 is available as a 7inch single in a deluxe picture sleeve on Mocambo Records and as a digital download on Légère Recordings.

After having completed the first run of shows for their recent album “2066” through UK, France and Germany, the Mighty Mocambos did an intimate performance at world-renowned Groove City Recordstore in their hometown Hamburg.
Not content with just playing stripped down versions of existing material, the band wanted to step up a notch from the “tiny desk” type concert idea and decided to record unreleased tunes for a vinyl single capturing the live energy and crowd atmosphere with analog studio techniques. After having warmed up with a couple of songs from “2066”, a cheerful crowd in the packed shop witnessed the band tracking magic takes of unheard songs directly to tape.
“St. Pauli Second Line”, an instrumental live favourite with simple but irresistant swamp funk ostinatoes turned into a frenetic call and response chant workout midway of the song. Singer Nichola Richards' tune “Keep It Movin'”, a mainstay of the band's live repertoire for years, was cut with great energy, finally finding its way onto wax. “Something's Missing” is a brand new tune with a raw sister funk vibe - written and arranged for the occasion, rehearsed once and performed live for the first time in the version you hear on this record.
While many live recordings a are mere mix of crowd noise and neglectable renditions of well-worn tunes that are unusable for DJs and hardly appealing to the dedicated listener, THE MIGHTY MOCAMBOS - Live At Groove City au contraire is a treat for turntableists and a testimony of the spark that a well-attuned live band can light up, combining the vibes of a concert with the no-nonsense analog sound of their well-loved studio recordings.
