The album opens with “Parade,” an upbeat synth-funk track that features a crisp piano intro and dreamy synth leads. This is an intense and cinematic Orchestral Electronic track, which has a touch of modern electronic music such as EDM / Drumstep / Neurofunk (or even Breakcore). However, its arrangement and instrumentation are based on authentic cinematic orchestral music.

Incidentally, “oni” is a kind of yōkai from Japanese folklore, variously translated as demons, devils, ogres or trolls. “Bi” means fire in Japanese. Onibi stands for the spirits born from the corpses of humans and animals or the grudges of resentful people.

Ran (Resistance)

Dark Model - Ran (Resistance) (Apocalyptic/Orchestral Electronica/Classical/Intense/Choir)

This is an epic and dramatic Orchestral Electronica track, which has a dark piano intro and builds dramatically with full orchestral arrangement and massive electronic beats.

It may differ from what you would expect from the title, but this track was not inspired by the famous movie “Broken Arrow.” Not limited to the feudal era in Japan or the Middle Ages in Europe, there have been many parables and anecdotes where “arrows” come up as symbols of human bonds and wills such as loyalty, trust, creed, or even fighting spirit. Those symbolic connotations inspired me. Having said that, what I wanted to incorporate in this music was, “Your (fighting) spirit never dies even if your arrows are broken.” That is the opposite of most contexts where people figuratively use broken arrows.

- アルバム解説（タツヤからのメッセージ）- 

今回のリリース制作にあたって、当時のProtoolsデータに立ち戻り、1曲につき数百あるトラック一つ一つの精査を行いました。必要と感じたものは新旧機材を使って再レコーディングし、コンプレッサーやEQなどの音処理も全て見直しをしています。

今回新ミックス盤をリリースするにあたっての最優先事項は、今の感覚で聴いて楽しめるように、音楽的な意味で「アップデート」することですが、それと同時に、オリジナル盤をリリースした2007年とは音楽の流通形態が大きく変わったことを踏まえて、現在の配信とストリーミングを中心としたリスニング環境に対応できるクオリティの音源を用意したいという思いもありました。

オリジナル音源の持つ力強さや勢いはそのままに、よりクリアで洗練されたサウンドを目指してミックス、マスタリングを施しています。この『デラックス・バージョン』が、皆さんの新たな愛聴盤となることを願っています。

- Backstory -

This mysterious, suspenseful, and fast-paced track features choir sound, orchestral arrangement, and massive electronic beat. When I began to sketch this track, it was much slower (around BPM 120) than the album version. Also, I didn’t think of using a choir. As I had felt some twist or punch was missing in the early version, I decided to leave it as it was until I came up with a breakthrough idea that could give some intensity or “shock” to the track in a definitive way. It was 5 or 6 years ago, even before I embarked on the first album of Dark Model.

Then, while I was creating a couple of other tracks for “Saga” concurrently, several significant ideas which ended up representing this track came to my mind all at once. That is to say, the Middle Eastern-esque main theme, multi-layered choir voices, the combination of massive beats and growling synth bass, and a baroque-influenced drop/bridge part. 

Some of you may think Camille Saint-Saens’ same-titled song inspired this song. That is NOT true. After finishing this track, originally I came up with “Death Wish” as the title. However, I discarded the idea because I thought it would remind you too much of Charles Bronson’s 1974 movie of the same name (or its remake by Bruce Willis). Then, “Dance of Death” came to my mind, while sounding to me a little pun on the title of Bruce Lee’s 1978 movie “Game of Death.” I thought the title would fit the intense and apocalyptic feel of the track pretty well, but at the same time, it sounded a bit banal to me. Moreover, Dark Model had already had a track called “Dance of Wrath.”

Needing a twist, I consulted with my American friend who specialized in literature. After listening to the track, he suggested the French version of the title. He added, “it was an artistic genre of the French late-medieval allegory on the universality of death. And it’s the origin of the phrase, I believe.” Although I didn’t know “Dance of Death” wasn’t a general phrase but a unique one which had its origin, I was fascinated by the sound of the French version and found a lot of common ground between the allegory and the track in terms of concept and background. The fact of the matter is, while I ended up choosing “Danse Macabre” as the title, my original inspiration and concept for this track came from somewhere else.

Dark Model is back with more progressive, melodious, and dramatic orchestral electronica. “Saga,” Dark Model’s 2nd album, takes the audience on an epic high-energy journey through 13 tracks of massive electronic beats with intricately layered symphonic sound. It jumpstarts an awakening to the listener’s soul and will continue to resonate for years to come.
