The MER (Model Electronic Records) series was initially produced for the film and broadcasting industry and has been highly acclaimed by music supervisors both in Japan and overseas. To make these releases more accessible to music fans, general distribution on platforms like Apple Music and Spotify began with the release of “Anti-Crime Breaks (MER-3006)” in 2021.

“Cyber City Connection: Urban Synthwave and Electro Funk” is, as the title suggests, a compilation themed around cyberpunk and sci-fi culture that dominated the 1980s and has recently been reevaluated and developed in movies and video games. Inspired by the futuristic worldviews that have spawned diverse forms of expression from novels and Hollywood films to Japanese manga and animation, the album features new arrangements of existing tracks from various monikers as well as new tracks under the MER name. Unlike typical “cyberpunk” works that often focus solely on the dark dystopian worlds seen in foreign films and games, this compilation sets itself apart by incorporating the exhilaration, urbanity, and romantic atmosphere unique to Japanese 80s culture.

Dark Model - Ran (Resistance) (Apocalyptic/Orchestral Electronica/Classical/Intense/Choir)

This is an epic and dramatic Orchestral Electronica track, which has a dark piano intro and builds dramatically with full orchestral arrangement and massive electronic beats.

It may differ from what you would expect from the title, but this track was not inspired by the famous movie “Broken Arrow.” Not limited to the feudal era in Japan or the Middle Ages in Europe, there have been many parables and anecdotes where “arrows” come up as symbols of human bonds and wills such as loyalty, trust, creed, or even fighting spirit. Those symbolic connotations inspired me. Having said that, what I wanted to incorporate in this music was, “Your (fighting) spirit never dies even if your arrows are broken.” That is the opposite of most contexts where people figuratively use broken arrows.

Minimalism and grooves weave the interplay of light and shadow.

In 2024, Tatsuya Oe, who previously released ambient works such as “Starry Messenger” and “Seisei Ruten,” as well as the early techno compilation “Early Techno Works 9697” under the OE alias, has now released a contemporary electronic album, which is the mainstream style for this alias. While inheriting the minimalist and progressive approach showcased in last year’s “Compositions in Blue,” this new work features more groovy and rhythmical tracks, resulting in a vibrant and dynamic album.

- Album Description -

This work is a contemporary electronic album composed with the concept of the interplay between ‘light and shadow,’ while drawing on the minimalistic elements and progressive direction showcased in last year’s “Compositions in Blue.” The track selection spans from bright and pop-infused melodies with choir introductions to melancholic and groovy tunes.

The opening track, ‘Breakout,’ is a thrilling instrumental that interweaves Oe’s characteristic funkiness with minimalism. Tracks like ‘Sky High’ and ‘Neo Metropolis’ weave female choir vocals and piano arpeggios into futuristic electronic funk. ‘The River Flows On,’ ‘Coast to Coast,’ and ‘Chapel Song’ immerse the listener with repetitive phrases and groovy bass and drums, serving as the ‘shadow’ in a sense. Finally, ‘Rejoice’ combines influences from Baroque music with funky rhythms, carried by a choir (or chant) that uplifts the mood.

今作は、昨年の『Compositions in Blue』のミニマリズム的要素やプログレッシブな路線を基調にしつつ、「光と影」の相互作用をコンセプトにして構成された、コンテンポラリー・エレクトロニック・アルバム。クワイアを導入したポップでブライトな楽曲からメランコリックでグルーヴィーな楽曲まで、幅を持たせた選曲が特徴。

Here comes an album sampler of Tatsuya Oe's "Seisei Ruten (Suchness 4)," a new sequel to his "Kankyo-Ongaku" (ambient music) series under the name of OE. "Suchness" albums will take you to a "zen garden of sound," floating into the time and space consisting of "ma (a silence and void)" and sequences of panoramic sounds. This release, "Seisei Ruten," collects calm and transitional music pieces with "magnificent nature and landscape" atmospheres.

It also includes a new version of “Garden Fountains,” a music piece which was used in the film “Kodama featuring GRAND SEIKO.”

In 2024, Tatsuya Oe, who previously released ambient works such as “Starry Messenger” and “Seisei Ruten,” as well as the early techno compilation “Early Techno Works 9697” under the OE alias, has now released a contemporary electronic album, which is the mainstream style for this alias. While inheriting the minimalist and progressive approach showcased in last year’s “Compositions in Blue,” this new work features more groovy and rhythmical tracks, resulting in a vibrant and dynamic album.

This work is a contemporary electronic album composed with the concept of the interplay between ‘light and shadow,’ while drawing on the minimalistic elements and progressive direction showcased in last year’s “Compositions in Blue.” The track selection spans from bright and pop-infused melodies with choir introductions to melancholic and groovy tunes.

The opening track, ‘Breakout,’ is a thrilling instrumental that interweaves Oe’s characteristic funkiness with minimalism. In "Moment of Now," the latest album from OE's soundscape project "Suchness," Tatsuya explores the concept of truly being present—feeling the present moment through mindfulness. Suchness, the Buddhism-originated term, originally connotes mindfulness: a state of mind characterized by focused attention, awareness, and acceptance of the present moment. Drawing on his background as a Japanese artist, Tatsuya further delves into how this essence can be expressed through his music, inspired by his unique connection to nature and sound.

In this album, he blends traditional methods of composing Suchness music—layering and eliminating sparse and aleatoric sounds and sequences—with contemporary rhythmic elements. Genres like disco often rely on repetitive beats and grooves, which can sometimes pull the audience away from the current moment, guiding them on a long journey through time. But Tatsuya's choice to slow down the rhythms and tempos carefully reverses that effect entirely. The deliberate-paced, thoughtful beats, through moments of silence and voids, invite heightened awareness of the present, like observing cells under a microscope or noticing subtle changes in our surroundings—slow-motion awareness of now.

MER, a creative imprint and artist project under Model Electronic Records (@ModelElectronic), was originally created for the film and broadcasting industry and has earned strong recognition from music supervisors across the United States, Japan, and beyond. The series became available to a broader audience with the public release of "Anti-Crime Breaks" on Apple Music, Spotify, and other platforms. 

“Cosmic Funk Expo 2: Vintage Electronic Jazz Funk Vibes,” the latest release under the moniker of MER, is a compilation album that captures the atmosphere of jazz-funk, which captivated the globe in the late ’70s and early ’80s, and elevates it into the realms of modern electronic music and R&B. With bouncy beats, undulating synth bass, and percussive slap bass creating tight grooves; the music is further enhanced by arrangements of spacey synths, piano, and brass. This album is packed with the euphoria, futuristic spirit, and mellowness unique to crossover jazz of that era. Blending a vintage aesthetic reminiscent of modern hip-hop, R&B, and vaporwave, the album features 24 completely original tracks—no samples from existing recordings were used.
