DIGITAL LOVERS (GEN045) by @eilieneilien is a captivating and perplexing articulation, dreamlike and intimate throughout yet uncompromising and enveloping in its realization. Entranced voices appear doubled, shifted, they take on a shimmering, cool quality. Through careful sparse arrangements, living, breathing, discrete music environments result, constructed using ruminating trance plucks; huge drifting synth washes and gliding, metallic pads. Incidental concrète material, crisp bass pulses and uncanny sound objects remind the listener of the digital root and conception of this music, in which stripped down computer music traces come to life as an animated whole.

"Emotional audio synthesis ~ SuperCollider pop music ~ Digital daydreaming.
The music on Digital Lovers is a special mixture of self-coded synthetic sounds and timeless pop-music. It refers to existing genres and phenomena, but defies any specific category creating a strong style of its own.
My main sound producing tool is SuperCollider, a text-based audio coding platform. I’ve coded my own sounds, instruments and structures with the means of audio synthesis, sample manipulation and input signal modification. The thematic sphere floats between digital and organic. Synthetic walls of sound are mirrored to the mediations of the “natural” world, in the shape of field recordings, acoustic instruments and my voice. Love is searching it’s place in this spectre of digital and organic reality: excitement of future love, grief over fading love, love’s force for creation and transformative power of love.”

Following the aspirations of the first compilation of Bizaarbazaar, #2 is a media experiment that attempts to preserve musical content against the unpredictable mutations of the web. It features the work of over 40 artists responding to the themes: ‘Sonic Fragments,’ and ‘Rhythmic Weaponry.’ 

While bizaarbazaar #1 was packaged as a zine and double cassette, its successor strays further from conventional music packaging to take the form of a t-shirt tied to a unique download code, and a radio transmission on NTS Radio. To celebrate as well as accompany the release, a listening session of bizaarbazaar #2 is held at Motto Berlin in collaboration with the Swiss magazine zweikommasieben.

In this episode Steph speaks to Jonnine Standish, a performer and musician best known for fronting Australian post-punk band HTRK, and her developing solo career under the mononym Jonnine. The Australian artist is is currently living in the idyllic Dandenong Ranges of greater Melbourne with her husband Conrad (of CS + Kreme), where Jonnine spent her time during lockdown producing her debut solo album 'Blue Hills'. Released via Boomkat in late July, the record moves even further from the dub-y post-industrial gloom of early HTRK into a lovely warmth and introspection that’s lightly sprinkled with the singer’s inimitable wit.
