RHYTHM + SWEAT

In May 2015, Modern Moves, an ERC-funded project based at King's College, London, held a research showcase dedicated to the life of Katherine Dunham, a groundbreaking African-American dancer, choreographer and anthropologist. The event brought together researchers, dancers and even Dunham's daughter who sought to reconstruct the many aspects of this phenomenal woman, who toured 57 countries with her all-black dance company, who wreaked havoc in the world of anthropology, who was beloved by the media and thousands of fans, who left a legacy of Afro-diasportic dance and who had a deep personal immersion in voodoo ritual. But who really was Katherine Dunham? Journalist and Modern Moves associate researcher Brenna Daldorph tried to answer that question as the day went on.
