Sun Ra’s disciple and multiface artist Jamal Moss is back to Modern Obscure Music after his debut on the label with the "The Anticipatory Organization" under The Sun God alias back in 2018.

J. Moss more known as Hieroglyphic Being is back to the Barcelona based record label with a new aka, OUR SOULS ARE IN THE HANDS OF THE TRANSALOR. Three years after "sɪŋkrɪtɪzəm", released on Warp’s sublabel Arcola, the chicago electronic-wizar signs "An Era of Spiritual Tenebrae”. The new EP is composed by two 18 minutes long freejazz-psycodelic improvisations. A trip to the dark holes of the space eternity.

Wide Scope Protocol is the new project from Barcelona-born composer, film score writer and producer Javier Rodero Villa. ‘Swan Cake’, his free-form debut album, will be released on April 7th, 2023, through Modern Obscure Music.

‘Swan Cake’ is a collection of works composed of long landscapes, psychedelic passages, and brain dance cuts reminiscent of the sounds of Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh, Manuel Gotching, Cocteau Twins, Stereolab and Moon Duo. During a two year “stage” living in London, Rodero Villa wanted to explore new territories far away from his background of composing film scores, with fellow Spaniard Pedro Vian giving him his Modern Obscure Music platform to experiment without limits. 

‘Swan Cake’ is 10 tracks of scintillating emotion with tender melodies, undulating euphoria and deep cinematic soundscapes showcasing the entrancing nature of Wide Scope Protocol’s sonic palette. The eerie atmosphere pulsates throughout the album as twinkling synths combine with icy, IDM-tinged fx and slow-burning, rhythmic vibrations.

Rodero Villa was a lover of music from an early age and took his early influences from the sound of bands like The Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3 (Swan Cake closes with a version of their legendary song Repeater)., and Low in addition to soundtrack composers such as Bernard Herrmann, Morricone and Carter Burwell.

Rodero Villa attended the ESCAC Film Academy in Barcelona, from which he graduated in Editing and Post Production. Given his musical and film training, coupled with his 15 years’ experience as a film editor and propelled by his mastery of the film language, Rodero went on to pursue a career in film scoring.

His first film, ‘Ghost Graduation’ (Javier Ruiz Caldera 2012, 20th Century Fox), was characterized by electronic sounds and experimental synthesizers combined with stringed instruments and percussion.  In 2015 Rodero Villa was nominated for the Feroz Awards along with composers such as Shigeru Umebayashi and Alberto Iglesias for his work in ‘Spy Time’ (Javier Ruiz Caldera 2015, Warner Bros). Further film score compositions include ‘Valley of The Death’ (Sony Pictures), the upcoming film, ‘A Man Of Action’ (Netflix Original) - and a variety of soundtracks for series and documentaries like ‘Ciudades a Contraluz’, ‘Le Jour de Glorie’ or the upcoming: ‘The Hanging of Stuart Cornfeld’.

Rodero Villa is currently working on a new TV Show while preparing the next Wide Scope Protocol album.

Sau Poler teams up with Modern Obscure Music label boss Pedro Vian on this beautiful record, inspired by the dialogue between darkness and light. The Catalan duo previously worked together on the hard hitting Paral.lel, which was released via XLR8R in 2015. On El Pas Del Temps, they present four melodic efforts.
“This record shows our desire to tell stories with each track. With the combination of our sonic palettes, we present a dreamy, hypnotic and beautiful journey. The result is a rich sound between light and darkness, where the tracks never remain in the same place for too long. Everything changes, everything moves, it’s all in the detail.”
Solstici (Solstice) is an urgent dancefloor winner with an acidic flavour to the second half. It features moody bass surges and golden keys that produce a beautiful melody. Nuit (Night) is calm yet powerful. Its strength comes from emphatic percussion and an addictive key refrain. La Mer (The Sea) is a deep journey inspired by the sea. Waves of aquatic keys are joined by expansive strings, textured percussion and subtle bass hits. El Pas Del Temps (As time goes by) rounds off the release with a melodious synth driven track. The synths are backed by live overlaid percussion, shaken keys and a moving bassline.
This EP shows just how powerful the partnership of Sau Poler and Pedro Vian is. The beauty truly is in the detail! The official release party will be at club LAUT November 18.

Olaf Blanch debuts on Modern Obscure Music with the Borealis EP, which also features a remix by Suzanne Kraft. The Amsterdam based Modern Obscure Music label launches a new sub-division named MOMArchives. 
MOMArchives is a reissue label that will focus on electronic music. All releases will be available on vinyl and also digitally. 

The first release is Neocrystal by Japanese producer Yoshihiro Sawasaki. It is a fantastic slice of mid 90s Japanese Ambient Techno that needs to be heard by a larger audience. Yoshihiro Sawasaki is a Kyoto based producer who has released music under aliases such as Naturally Gushing and Doctor YS & the Cosmic Drunkards on labels like Sublime Records, Apollo Records and V2. Neocrystal was originally released on Sublime Records back in 1994. Sublime Records is an important label in the history of Japanese electronic music. The imprint has released music by domestic artists such as Susumu Yokota and Ken Ishii, as well as foreign talent such as Global Communications. 

The B Side to Neocrystal is Magic Dome. This was licensed to Dave Angel’s instalment of the legendary X-Mix series on Studio K7! 
The first MOMArchives release begins with the ‘On The Beach’ mix of Neocrystal. It is a dreamy ambient track with gorgeous key washes and reverberating synthetics. It is followed by Magic Dome, a spacey keyed cut with bright synth play, subtle percussion and hypnotic key work. This is a wonderful archive release from Yoshihiro Sawasaki and it is a great start for MOMArchives.

Yoshihiro Sawasaki - Neocrystal (On the beach mix)

Bep Kororoti & Akin debut on Modern Obscure Music with four Afro influenced tracks. Bep Kororoti released a self-titled mini album on Hivern Discs’ more experimental HVNX sub-label in 2016, but he is better known for making music as Kresy. Here, Kororoti is joined by Akin, who provides vocals and saxophone on this EP. Epomuyeñ is dancefloor cut with striking percussion and strong vocals, whilst Eruobodo is a sax dominated track. Ijotiya channels the spirit of Fela and Afrobeat over a spinning bassline, whilst Love is the only way has a deep spiritual vibe and a powerful vocal.

Albino Sound - Black Lagoon

Modern Obscure Music has been making links with the Far East since label boss Pedro Vian visited Japan and this is their first 12” release from a Japanese artist. Albino Sound is Hirotaka Umetani from Osaka and here he presents Black Lagoon. This is an exciting EP of experimental soundcapes and left of centre dancefloor escapades with an extra special remix from German producer DJ Normal 4. Black Lagoon opens the EP with live percussion and mysterious sounds and is followed by the mesmerising tones of Plum Valley. Transparent Colony is an open-armed ambient cut and the EP finishes with two versions on Dried Seeds. The original is an energetic mover and DJ Normal 4's Vibe Strike Remix is an eastern synth inspired mission.

Albino Sound - Dired Seeds (DJ Normal 4's Vibe Strike)

‘PRSNT’ is a unique global artistic project combining the input of artists across the worlds of music, video and written word which acts as a statement on how we, as consumers, engage with music in the 21st century. Vital electronic musicians including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Lafawndah, Lyra Pramuk, Lucrecia Dalt and Visible Cloaks have each contributed untitled tracks, which are approximately 32 seconds long.	
 	
The concept was devised by Created By Us and the Barcelona-based label Modern Obscure Music. They read a study which identified that the overwhelming volume of instantly accessible information online is shortening attention spans and altering how audiences engage with music digitally. Their curiosity about the state of online consumption developed further on discovering that around a third of all listeners using digital platforms skip to the next track, within the first 30 seconds of playing.  
 
Each musician was given a fascinating challenge to create engaging compositions with real artistic merit, inside the confines of this shortened span. Akin to Brian Eno’s famous Windows 95 start-up music, the time constraints are crucial, and the compositions are deceptively complex and more substantial than expectations of their nano nature would suggest.
 
‘PRSNT’ acts as a critique of flighty feed culture, but is simultaneously constructive, providing something which is either proposed solution, or “if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em” resignation. Every artist has interpreted the brief differently, resulting in an intriguing blueprint for the potential future of digital music. Could abbreviated micro compositions satisfy, inspire and nourish like their longer counterparts? They certainly take up much less of listeners’ busy lives, which are often spent tackling ever-increasing workloads.
