We gladly present to you to second volume of ‘Bridging the Gap’. This time round, instead of combining about 55 different musical pieces or pieces of musical pieces together in a 60-minute mix, we decided to use a little bit over 100. 

The mix includes a tribute to the classic breaks mixes in the form of mixing and cutting up newer renditions of iconic songs; a tribute to Jay Dee; a tribute to MF DOOM who is to both of us one of the most extravagant and influential MCs of all time; and a tribute to Double K from People Under The Stairs who is to both of us a real unsung hero of hip-hop. May these three colossuses rest in peace.

Apart from that, there is the mandatory good amount of lesser-known breaks and grooves across rap, funk and disco, plus this time we also ventured into neo soul and afrobeat. 

We would like to thank Moneyshot, Static and Professor Groove from WeFunk Radio, Jazz T, Oonops and the Cut Beetlez whose shoutouts you can briefly hear sprinkled throughout the mix. In the intro you’ll hear us being called “giants in the game” which we surely do not live up to. Students of the craft - this we’ll always be.

Azymuth — the Brazilian jazz-funk wizards — are back on the work horse and sounding as effortlessly slick as they always have. Since the passing of keyboard maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami in 2012, remaining members Ivan Conti and Alex Malheiros have worked tirelessly to keep the spirit of Azymuth alive, and to continue the legacy of Bertrami’s genius. But out of pain comes a new lease of life and as the title suggests, Fênix (out on Far Out Recordings) marks a new era with Kiko Continentino now on keys.

A hugely talented pianist, composer and arranger, like Bertami, Kiko has worked with the likes of Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil and Djavan. The album also features Brazilian percussion legend Robertinho Silva, one of Brazil’s most important and influential players.

Loyal fans of the trio will immediately gravitate to Fênix's colourful arrangements and musical mastery. The title track is the perfect show and tell of just that; a beautiful marriage of croaking bass slaps and sun-drenched chord progressions that act as the perfect amble out of summer and into the autumn.

To coincide with Azymuth’s massive European tour, Far Out have pressed a one-off run of 300 hand-stamped and hand-numbered Fênix white label LPs, which will come housed in the finished sleeve. This super-limited priceless piece of Azymuth history will be available exclusively at the shows on the tour, over a month ahead of the official release date.

It’s the year 1988 and the Summer Olympics are being held in Seoul, South Korea. The Goethe Institut is in charge of the German cultural contribution and, together with the Kunstdisco Seoul, creates a mix of architecture, theater, dance, performance and music.

The Stroer Bothers, Hans Peter and Ernst, are responsible for the musical curation and release of a limited 12” vinyl that has been unavailable for a while.
Now the rare Kustdisco Seoul Ouvertüre record has been reissued. The original recording tapes have been mixed and remastered once again in addition to brand new remixes, including ours.
