Aeyde Radio Mix 09 is broadcasting now, curated by series guest editor Whitney Wei.
This season’s contribution comes from KMRU, the Nairobi-born, Berlin-based sound artist whose work is founded on intent listening. Years of attuning to the sonic layers of global landscapes have shaped his ability to construct unexpected and immersive sound environments. These have found a home in institutions and showcases such as the Barbican, Atonal, CTM, and Dekmantel.

Whenever KMRU listens to a city, he often thinks of its key note, or the prevailing tone. In Berlin, it's mostly the transportation noises. He approached his entry into the Aeyde Radio repertoire much in the same way. The track "9°C" by Whatever the Weather, the pseudonym of fellow field recording artist and friend Loraine James, sets the "old IDM vibe." Its wealth of glitches and texture draws open the curtains on the mix before voyaging into an hour of softly drifting, expansive atmospherics.

Next up at Markham we’ve got a mix from the ever busy/ever thoughtful basic chanel. Employing a wide range of Newtonian physics, this mix comes through at a mind bending tempo. Hinting at breaks, psy trance, and dubstep, listeners are allowed to enjoy all the cakes instead of settling for one silly flavour. basic chanel’s tenure at the reigns of Untitled909 have brought many an influence to her craft… something that shines through in this one hour mix. We’re super super happy to have her on the platform, and are looking forward to a future of happy collabs, hugs, and smiles.

For those two hours i rly wanted to embrace the picture a glaoting fairies-goblins complete cycle party, imagining the rite would happen in a flowery clearing deep in the middle of a giant firs forest, where those feisty creatures would then ingest some fine nuts and ravishing mushroom and start the ball by giggling swinging hovering around, until the hit arrives and the dance become more frenetic as they progressively mutate into forest parts into soil and roots and bushes, slowly loosing their contour to be part of the whole. The climax would be complete fusion, returning to being particules of the mole, flirting with univers laws, atomic gangbang. Then gently the rite wraps up as they return to their bodies, ultimate shapeshifters, fulfilled from the feeling of shortly having been together one. Return the energy to the ground and the life takes delightfully back its course

We've been a fan of sleek fata for a while now, often tuning into his exquisitely put together "Cremation of Care" shows - which explore a wide spectrum of experimental music focused on tracks with an high sound design profile going from psychedelic electronics to jazz with a touch of punk and trip hop between.

This mix beautifully showcases the variety of his tastes and skills of mixing it all together, from dub to dubstep, techno to half time & masterfully jumping tempo’s - sleek fata’s got it covered.

𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘅
I wanted to build a thematic journey that could bring together different types of music and tempos, while still feeling coherent as a whole. I found a strong inspiration in the icy textures of dub techno, it sparked the whole idea. So this is essentially a cold journey through the dub techno continuum (dub techno in the broad sense): half-time, dubstep, dub techno, footwork, downtempo… each track shares a similar colour palette, sonically speaking. Think light blue, white, and grey tones. I imagined a dancer trapped in a cold room with a perfect sound system, moving and reacting to these glacial sounds. But "glacial" doesn’t mean emotionless—on the contrary. Despite the chill, there's a lot of soul embedded in each track.

𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰?
I grew up listening to rap while living in the suburbs of Lyon as a kid. Later, when I moved into the city centre for university, I discovered electronic music. So yes, my environment has always shaped my musical taste—just like it does for everyone, I believe. Our preferences are influenced by sociological data: age, ethnicity, the country we grow up in, our parents' professions, and so on.

But beyond that, my uncle, who I lived with when I was younger, had a big impact. During the peak of the Emule era, he downloaded every US rap album he could find and burned them onto blank CDs. When I came home from school, I would pick one at random and discover a new album every day. That routine really shaped my digging habit. These days, the Bandcamp community is a big influence for me.

I’m working on Vision Pro Dubs, a various artists project that started as a special episode of my Cremation of Care radio show. It brings together contemporary and cutting-edge smooth dub sounds. Besides that, Malesa is working on their second album, and we’re putting together a remix EP of Seta Loto’s last release. I’m also collaborating with Cortex of Light on something exciting!

Recorded partly in Senegal with local musicians playing traditional instruments, "Landscapes Of The Unfinished" is Piano Interrupted's 3rd album for German experimental label Denovali.

This album sees pianist Tom Hodge and “electronician” Franz Kirmann explore a more introspective approach to their sound. The sonorities and recordings the pair brought back from West Africa are deconstructed, mangled and texturised, turned into a pointillist landscape until only a faint and distant souvenir remains.

These beds of pulsating soundscapes and earthy textures serve as base for Hodge’s delicate piano phrases and intricate compositions, interlaced with long-time collaborator Tim Fairhall's fluid double bass playing.

Harsher territories are also visited during the 9 tracks that compose the LP; fuzzy Senegalese radio voices and the distant memory of African percussion collide with distorted bass and buzzing drones or screaming textures battle with screeching double bass sounds and tortured piano strings.

The overall tone of the album reflects the duo’s desire to musically translate the experience of the Dakar trip (where Franz Kirmann grew up), but also to break away from the first two albums' intricate programming and editing and instead go towards a writing and recording experience directly inspired by their live experience. Hodge’s clarinet, an important facet of the Piano Interrupted live show, is captured on record for the first time. 

This surge towards documenting a moment, leaving a trace or examining something concrete is further reflected in the choice of titles (all named after the musicians who took part in the recordings) and also the design, which is for the first time a photograph. Taken by filmmaker Cath Elliott, who travelled with the pair to Dakar to document the process, the album artwork captures one of the numerous half-built structures, infinite and abandoned, surrounding the studio in the suburbs of Dakar, and provides both an unfinished urban landscape and yet when viewed as a single moment in time, one of many compellingly complete landscapes of the unfinished.

Suum Cuique is the alias used by Demdike Stare's Miles Whittaker to vent his purest analogue noise experiments. Giving a stoic nod to the hardware emissions of Mika Vainio or Maurizio Bianchi, and conducted with a meditative practice comparable with Eleh, his 2nd album 'Ascetic Ideals' is the sound of Miles'  machines coaxed into revealing their bleakest secrets, often recorded straight from the mixing desk with no overdubs or edits. Aesthetically, it's closest to his Demdike Stare material, as opposed to his Pendle Coven or MLZ releases, and was - perhaps unsurprisingly - crafted in between sessions for the 'Elemental' album. But these tracks are far more stark, murky and extreme than anything in the Demdike cache. The sound veers between outright shock attacks like opener 'Strohtopf' to plangent techno malfunctions on 'Kuiper Analysis' and the shellshocked, Alberich-like sound sphere of 'Core Values', leading us blindfolded thru the infernal torture chambers of 'Proton Aesthetic' and the Carpenter-esque closing sequence 'Dionysus Decay'. Recommended for the headstrong, just make sure to play this double loud.
