Playing music at the ocean, an infinite mirror curls upward towards you. Picturesque and perverse, cracked enamel castings sit in lazy but unsettled sands. Something is just right, having once stirred beneath the surface it now hovers misting at eye level. You can put your hand through it; pushing humidity around like a furry catkins flake in a tepid wind.

BAD LSD TRIPS is a collaboration between artists Domingo Castillo and doris dana. Working through the process of developing sounds during the pandemic, the duo amassed large swaths of recordings on a weekly basis from 2020 and 2021 in Miami, Florida. The debut recording of "bad LSD trips" for the ENXPL series is documentation of improvising and honing a sonic vocabulary that is rooted in the tradition of early industrial, dark ambient and tape music. The backdrop of the recorded effort is a geographical conundrum of a city worn threadbare by candied advertising, tourism, and aesthetics. BAD LSD TRIPS inverts the spectacle of their locale with psychedelic meditations searching for, and occasionally digging inside of, a place of ease.

​​DRUMS is featuring a proggy composition by Macadam Mambo´s EVA GEIST, a jacking hi hat inferno with agitating spanish lyrics by CIENFUEGOS, known thru his releases on L.I.E.S., a dancefloor drumsolo straight out of >Ireland by LUMIGRAPH, who was already featured on MMODEMMs MDM E box and should be known from his Opal Tapes and Mr. Saturday Night releases a few years ago. PEDER MANNERFELT delivers a trippy, drunk masterclass drumlesson, taking house apart with his "Dumb Drums".

Dreamcycles, the moniker of Irish-Canadian artist Jennifer Moore, emerges from the ashen present to deliver her conceptual debut mini-album Future Lights and Archetypes. Operating at the node between technological reality and speculative fiction, Moore transforms ethereal bedroom pop and monolithic electronics into uncanny soundscapes to explore what she describes as the “landscape of a future global economy.”

Moore’s imagination conjures a new order of global governance which uses data to assess the competencies, characteristics, and productivity capacity of its citizens. Predictive analytics are used to shuttle humans around the globe in a tightly choreographed dance of space, labour and capital. Spanning a perspective both personal and systemic, the Dublin-based producer guides the listener through her sober invention, anchoring its alienating events around simple longings for home.

Across six tracks, present-day sonics are repurposed to create warped atmospherics. “If I wanted to see the world, I’d have to imagine it,” says a disembodied voice on opening track ‘Memory (Temporary Access)’. Pitter-patter footsteps, playing children, and whirring device noises swirl around the words: harsh, familiar, and ultimately unsettling. ‘Fonn Abhaile’ follows—its vaporous synths matched by breathy vocals—but ‘Abrasive Routes’ reveals the haunting potential of Moore’s psychoacoustic constructions. News report snippets detailing the Dublin financial district jostle with screeching high-definition cars. “It’s become the most extraordinary contrast to everything else here,” recites a roving correspondent, cataloguing inequalities suffused into the electronic artist’s home.

As the mini-album progresses, the emotional intensity rises. ‘Memory Laneways’ pairs an elegiac refrain with industrial kicks before ‘Playing with the Concrete’ offers a moment of brightness. “You look good when you’re smiling,” sings Moore over a distant sinogrime melody, followed by her closing, and most affecting track, ‘Final Goodbye.’ Meditations on belonging are swept along by circular, trance-like synths whose closing destination is bittersweet: euphoria tempered by the artist’s sombre backdrop.

Moore describes Future Lights and Archetypes as a “post-extraction artefact.” Through its diary entries, radio clippings, and fragmented songs, the mini-album resembles an object hewn from a fully-realised world, like an Ursula K. Le Guin novel refracted through machine learning. Keen listeners might also detect a flicker of Grouper’s place-based musings or even the crumbling electronics of Actress. But this release melds intimacy with pulsating stimuli, Moore’s gaze oriented firmly towards the human cost of an omniscient technological future.

Dreamcycles - Memory Laneways

Exercising abstention and reduction, the musical duo of Jin Mustafa and Robin Smeds Mattila – Karabasan Drane – finds collaborative purpose in aesthetic refinement. Their debut album Crystalline State (EN X PL, 2020) purposefully conceives a sharp and distinct sonic world, a collage of shaded dreams and imaginations in xeroxed high-contrast.

With little or no haste, the music of Karabasan Drane maintains an eerie urgency. The reason might be found innately: it was all written for upcoming live performances. What began in rehearsed live compositions for sparse electronics has now come together on record, documenting material for live performances of the past half-decade. Notable occurrences include Norbergfestival in Sweden and Herrensauna in Berlin.

Jin Mustafa is a DJ, electronic musician and visual artist based in Stockholm. Her work is of shifting media, often taking form in moving images, sculptures and sound. She is interested in notions of liminality and technology, and the relationships of personal and collective memory.

Robin Smeds Mattila is an electronic musician and graphic artist based in Stockholm. Under the guise of Human Rays, his musical works carry remnants of techno culture and ambient memorabilia, clothed in coarse patches of textural noise and drone.

"Crystalline State" marks a new path of collaboration between Glyn Maier and Nick Klein. Having previously released collaborative recorded Klein/Lack efforts , they now focus both of their label practices to produce the tape series "EN X PL".
