A double pack from Mammo, six tracks digging deep. General Patterns is the first time he’s released a record outside of his own constellation of labels and identities. Something new.

You can file this one under (dub) techno too if you like. Linked to the music he’s made as Puddlerunner last year in some ways, or the texture of tracks like Variable. It was compiled with Short Span following the completion of intense work on the ambient album Landmarks under his given name Fabiano, and quickly brought together an extended set of stripped back, patient, wonderfully rewarding sound. Really beautiful. Some mossy earthy texture, some starlit night skies.

The third episode in our new series (and our 40th podcast!) comes from Lyon based Comic Sans Records label-head and lyl radio resident, sleek fata.

We've been a fan of sleek fata for a while now, often tuning into his exquisitely put together "Cremation of Care" shows - which explore a wide spectrum of experimental music focused on tracks with an high sound design profile going from psychedelic electronics to jazz with a touch of punk and trip hop between.

This mix beautifully showcases the variety of his tastes and skills of mixing it all together, from dub to dubstep, techno to half time & masterfully jumping tempo’s - sleek fata’s got it covered.

𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘅
I wanted to build a thematic journey that could bring together different types of music and tempos, while still feeling coherent as a whole. I found a strong inspiration in the icy textures of dub techno, it sparked the whole idea. So this is essentially a cold journey through the dub techno continuum (dub techno in the broad sense): half-time, dubstep, dub techno, footwork, downtempo… each track shares a similar colour palette, sonically speaking. Think light blue, white, and grey tones. I imagined a dancer trapped in a cold room with a perfect sound system, moving and reacting to these glacial sounds. But "glacial" doesn’t mean emotionless—on the contrary. Despite the chill, there's a lot of soul embedded in each track.

𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰?
I grew up listening to rap while living in the suburbs of Lyon as a kid. Later, when I moved into the city centre for university, I discovered electronic music. So yes, my environment has always shaped my musical taste—just like it does for everyone, I believe. Our preferences are influenced by sociological data: age, ethnicity, the country we grow up in, our parents' professions, and so on.

But beyond that, my uncle, who I lived with when I was younger, had a big impact. During the peak of the Emule era, he downloaded every US rap album he could find and burned them onto blank CDs. When I came home from school, I would pick one at random and discover a new album every day. That routine really shaped my digging habit. These days, the Bandcamp community is a big influence for me.

I’m working on Vision Pro Dubs, a various artists project that started as a special episode of my Cremation of Care radio show. It brings together contemporary and cutting-edge smooth dub sounds. Besides that, Malesa is working on their second album, and we’re putting together a remix EP of Seta Loto’s last release. I’m also collaborating with Cortex of Light on something exciting!

For the 25th installation of our series, @shaifm delivers complex, organic percussions interwoven over elastic and flavorful basslines. Based on bass music, and folding in an eclectic palette of global electronic music influences, the set maintains an impactful, driving, and playful energy. A perfect one for sweating it out under the summer sun. 

Born in China and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Shai FM is a DJ and producer who moves fluidly across the bass and club spectrum, influenced by his cross-cultural upbringing. Now based in Philadelphia, Shai FM continues to push his sound forward, sharing stages with artists like Two Shell, Nikki Nair and Anna Morgan, earning a reputation for blending forward-thinking club music with his own productions. He holds a residency on Philly’s Great Circles Radio and has been featured on Resident Advisor’s Mix of the Day. As a producer, his tracks have earned spins on influential platforms such as Dekmantel, Rinse FM and Lot Radio and support from artists like Om Unit, Interstellar Funk, Re:ni, Aloka, Ayesha, Pluralist, Teqmun and more.

His most recent release came out just a week ago: Erre, rooted in club music experimentation and aligned with RUTA’s transnational creative ethos. Featuring producers from Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, Germany, USA, the UK, and France, Erre maps a global network fluent in bass-heavy rhythms.

Producteur, performeur live, artiste sonore et DJ, Trois-Quarts Taxi System (Eloi Petillon) fait partie de cette génération post-Covid qui embrasse pleinement son style hybride, se libérant des étiquettes de genre pour créer des paysages sonores complexes et hypnotiques. Le dubstep, la techno, l'électro acoustique et même la dnb ne sont que quelques-uns des univers qu’il survole et mixe à la recherche d’expériences cérébrales, psychédéliques et imprévisibles où design sonore futuriste, field recordings et polyrhythmes se mêlent et s’affrontent.
Il est actuellement résident sur les radios Rinse et Lyl. En 2019, il co-fonde le collectif et label De la... je l'espère, puis l'année suivante, le label Hard Love Motor Love, dédié à la musique expérimentale et aux créations visuelles.

Vibrational Studies (In Echospace)

Deepchord is the pseudonym of Detroit's Rod Modell - one of the most noted prodcuers operating in the dub-infused aftermath of the Basic Channel axis and all its myriad offshoots. Following an extended hiatus, Rod Modell has re-wired his studio again and is once again receiving great acclaim for his low-end techno variations. Chicago's Steve Hitchell is a longtime Deepchord cohort and a noted producer in his own right - most notably under the Soultek moniker. Hitchell and Modell have recently started to produce material together and this release is their much anticipated debut under the Echospace umbrella.

"Empyrean" is surely the warmest, most loved track in this series - an analogue reggae reduction that revolves around the timeless sounds of a valve-operated organ and a steppa's vibe that's about as far removed from the anonymous techno templates of days gone by as can be. Having been road-tested to a throng of appreciative listeners at this year's Sonar Festival we can testify first-hand to the devastating effect this track will have played at appropriate volumes, it's truly a BASS masterpiece.

"Empyrean" is a low-end beast in slow motion, the arrangement of shuddering bassline and twilight keys once again lending proceedings a menacing yet somehow ethereal quality that will no doubt lodge itself into your record box somewhere between M4 and Domina - It's just THAT good.
