I like to name instruments. For me it imbues them with added life or personality. I don’t tend to go for girls names. I prefer obscure, silly or pretentious ones. I named this 12 string ‘Castrovalva’ after a Lego space cruiser I had for Christmas in the late seventies or early eighties. I named the space cruiser after an episode of Dr Who.

Piece inspired by romanticism in the city: love within concrete walls, poetry beneath artificial light...

Three vocal parts (translated lyrics below) became in very different moods in the songwriter phase, so I couldn't fit them in the same tempo. Working hard on transitions, I got the following solution:

Intro: ad libitum
A: 6/4 & 5/4 at 147bpm
B: 4/4 at 220bpm
C: 4/4 at 293bpm

This is one of my most recent songs, and it's pure tribute to my favorite band of all time - Poison. I've always been obsessed with "Nothing But a Good Time," and "Livin' for the Weekend" is my love letter to that anthem and everything Poison represents.

While my earlier songs came from heartbreak, anger, or nostalgia, this one captures that pure party spirit that made me fall in love with hair metal in the first place. It's about that universal struggle of working all week just to afford a few hours of freedom on the weekend. "Pocket's empty, fridge is bare / Bills keep piling, life ain't fair" - that's the reality most of us live, but the song is about refusing to let that kill your spirit.

I tried to channel Bret Michaels' storytelling style - that mix of working-class struggle and unapologetic fun. The pre-chorus "Five days grinding, paying my dues / Need a break from these workweek blues" has that Poison rhythm and attitude that's been stuck in my head for decades.

The bridge is probably my favorite part: "Here's to the drones in their cubicle hives / Dreaming of more than just staying alive." It's a battle cry for everyone who feels trapped by the 9-to-5 grind but refuses to give up on having a good time.

Writing this felt like coming full circle. After all the introspective ballads and heavy instrumentals, I wanted to get back to that pure, unapologetic rock and roll joy that first made me want to write songs. The "Hey, hey, whoa!" intro and "It don't get wilder, baby!" outro are straight from the Poison playbook - just pure energy and celebration.

With AI helping me bring this to life, I finally got to hear my own version of that classic hair metal sound that shaped my musical DNA. Sometimes you just need a song that makes you want to throw your fist in the air and forget about everything else for three and a half minutes.
