In collaboration with the California Arts Council and the KDA Creative Core, Modesto Sound brings you season 4 of CARP(California Audio Roots Project). This season is focused on social justice and community involvement encompassing Modesto's underserved communities.

Tanja then explains how her disabilities and past trauma have shaped her current career journey of advocating for Social Security and other benefits for the unhoused community, mainly unhoused individuals with disabilities. Tanja then tells multiple success stories of helping unhoused individuals obtain benefits and housing where they have previously fallen through the cracks as well as gives some potential solutions for improving the current unhoused situation.

In this podcast, Wanda talks about moving from the south to California at a young age where she found a passion for photography and eventually made her way to working as a Deputy in a jail. Wanda then details what led her to resign from her career and end up unhoused and hooked up drugs, where she hit rock bottom and eventually found her way to sober living and turning her life around for the better. Wanda now is happily retired and runs her own non profit recovery house where she provides affordable sober housing for different demographics.

In this podcast, Mayor Sue Zwahlen talks about growing up in Modesto and realizing in the 3rd grade that she wanted to be a nurse. Sue then talks about how she met her husband and her path moving around the country working as a nurse and experiencing different areas of the country, before moving back to Modesto to work at Doctor's Hospital. Sue then details her history working with different philanthropic organizations around the area and how that shaped her journey to running for the Modesto School Board, Congress, and then eventually the Mayor of Modesto where she won the first time she ran. Sue then details how she hit the ground running as soon as she took office and some of the programs and improvements she has worked on during her mayorship of Modesto.

Jeffery then details some gang activities he experienced including his house getting shot up by gang members. Jeffery then talks about how his life changed after moving to the country, which led him to going to art school and finding his current path as an artist and musician.

Melanie then talks about facing her immense fear of public speaking by taking a job out of college where she had to speak to the community to help prevent domestic violence and abuse. Melanie kept this passion for helping others while she continued her education and eventually found her way to teaching, where she landed a teaching job at MJC. Melanie also details some success stories she has experienced while helping out currently incarcerated individuals throughout her teaching time.

Steven then details the journey to creating his non-profit SHARE (Stanislaus Homeless Advocacy and Resource Enterprise) and how he partners with different government programs to fill gaps in in the community with a totally volunteer based team, where all SHARE funding goes directly to the unhoused issue. Steven then talks about how effective SHARE can be with the unhoused issue due to their lack of limitations and red tape, and explains some of the inadequacies of how our government programs operate as well as some common misconceptions the public may have about our unhoused community in Modesto.
