It's sunshine time again. The time when we need a new D&B soundtrack to score our festivals, carnivals, pool parties and barbecues. And you'd struggle to find anyone better qualified to curate that soundtrack than Technique's bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith. Just a quick glance at their immense back catalogue of anthemic releases or their packed international bookings diary is enough to demonstrate that they know exactly how to bring those summertime vibes.

Things kick off in suitably monumental fashion with a cut from the head honchos themselves, “I Need Somebody”. If you were looking out from a festival stage at a sea of excited hands in the air, this tune's searing vocal hook and unrelenting waves of bass would suit that scene perfectly. And, of course, this album contains a lethal dosage of similarly colossal tracks. For example, MaxNRG enlists a quirky vocal from Marianna to boost the hype-levels on “Headshot” and recent signing Kronology delivers the driving and euphoric “Untouchable”. Plus, there are some sizeable contributions to the big-room roll call from a few names you won't have seen on Technique before, like Oder's “Closer” and T-Phonic & Deadman's “Show Me the Way”.

But summer's not all about the shades-on daytime raving, we need some choice sunset material too for when things get a little darker. Document One and Spectrem exemplify this beautifully with the laid-back and jazzy “Falling” and the Kyphosis-laced “Fade” respectively. Helsinki's liquid maestros LAOS pass through to drop “City Lights” and “Belong”, and Tantrum Desire treats us to the effervescent “Sea Breeze”. For when things get darker still, there are tracks like the technoid, percussive world-unto-itself of Salaryman & Dark Machine's “Night Shift”. Guys like Conspire and Brian Brainstorm bring some full-on jungle, and the whole compilation is peppered with alternative sounds like Digital's dub workout “Groove Together”.

The thirty-one tracks here represent a cross-section of the mighty, multi-stranded, multi-form D&B scene and what it can do for summer 2015. There are names you'll know and names you might not know yet. There are huge mainstream anthems and shadow-bound subtleties. There are tunes for midday and tunes for four in the morning. And for four in the afternoon the next day. Ultimately, this isn't the sound of the summer, this is all the many different sounds of the summer put together on one album. So, the soundtrack's sorted, time to go out and have a summertime that's worthy of it!

Merry Christmas everyone! Please enjoy this free download of my remix of a track entitled 'Night' by contemporary classical composer Ludovico Einaudi. I started this track late one night back in March after going to see Ludovico perform at the Colston Hall with my wonderful lady Beth. Ludovico is one of her favourite composers and so I put this cheeky bootleg together for her and now I've decided to make it available for you all to download and enjoy for FREE! 

You may have heard me play this in a few sets here and there throughout 2016, but other than live events this track hasn't really seen the light of day, so it's about time really.

Makoto, a man who’s been instrumental in Japan’s drum & bass movement since the birth of the genre, now signed exclusively to Hospital Records presenting his fifth solo album ‘Salvation’. A perfect fit bringing that trademark sound across 14 tracks of authentic soul and rolling jazz inspirited drum & bass.

‘I Don’t Wanna Wake Up’ featuring the outstanding vocals of Karina Ramage is the perfect summertime roller. Delightfully hypnotic, this will be a staple selection for any DJ worth their salt over the coming months, catching its premiere on Huw Stephens’ BBC Radio 1 slot. Makoto also empowers Karina’s topline prowess on the hauntingly beautiful ‘Winds Of Change’.

Following suit, the vocally driven ‘Salvation’ ft DRS balances an elegant ambiance with grittier elements. Switching to ‘Primitive Galaxy’ which focuses more on high-energy dancefloor impact but still with his distinctive bassline groove and melodic stabs. A jazzy riff takes the lead in ‘Fancy Free’ with celestial vocals and staccato drums, invoking a euphoric trance that all liquid tracks strive for.

Already having an enriched history across Good Looking and his own imprint Human Elements, Makoto is a leader in the art of funk, soul and jazz entrenched drum & bass. Modify Perspective is a Drum & Bass producer based in the UK and is best known for being head honcho of 'Liquifyah', which was hailed of one of the UK's premier D&B Collectives in it's hay day.

His mostly Liquid-driven productions gained a decent amount of support form names big and small worldwide and has seen releases on Viper Recordings and Lockdown alongside a number of self-releases. 

Hanging up the headphones in 2016 to focus on starting what is now Bristol's highest rated screen printing company Fyahfly Screen Print, his production has been put on hiatus for now and he's no longer touring or playing out quite as much. He does pop out of retirement from time to time to scratch the itch (or whenever Tribe Of Frog hops into the DMs). 

DJ shows are always full of energy, wether playing at prime time to a packed dance floor wanting it heavy, or more relaxed and intimate shows that require a deeper ambient Liquid vibe.

Although on indefinite hiatus, this isn't to say that one day a return might be on the cards. Having managed and developed the budding careers of artists such as Phaction (Metalheadz), Hugh Hardie (Hospital Records), Ill Truth (Symmetry Recordings), Octo Pi (Viper Recordings), Akov (Symbiotik Records, RAM) and Trafic MC, there's certainly a strong network of support in place should he switch the lights on in the studio again.
