Disquiet Junto Project 0546: Code Notes
The Assignment: Make music that includes a secret message.

I basically assigned distinct percussion/guitar riffs of 2 beats to each letter of the alphabet.  It felt a little dry so I added a little synth to every instance of the letter E.

The encoded phrase is "We must make our freedom by cutting holes in the fabric of this reality, by forging new realities which will, in turn, fashion us."  It's the first sentence in a longer passage by the anarchist collective, Crimethinc.  I ran across it in David Graeber's book, The Utopia of Rules.

This is my entry for Disquiet Junto 0622. The prompt was a tough one this time: expresse the idea of a shadow in sound or in music.
I pondered that a shadow was the result of the impact of light on the environment, delineating the contours of an object present in its way. I thought that a process with some degree of equivalence could be found in the multiple reflexions of sound on the walls of a room. The "shadow" of the sound played in the room would be the reverberating part, minus the source itself.
Therefore I wrote a short, slow and atmospheric piece I played on my piano, side-chained the piano track to an ample, shimmer-like reverberation that I recorded on a separate track, and then built the final piece by alternating the source (the piano) and its shadow (its reverberating sound), first together, and then letting the source disappear to reveal only its reverberating "shadow".

Shadow of a Doubt (disquiet0622)

Rather than thinking of shadows as a result of shapes blocking light, I went with an alternative definition of something, usually a person, that follows closely. In this case, similar melodies that follow each other. My goal was to create a piece that's repetitive and minimal.

Using an Arturia Keystep 37 and Novation Peak, I manually played three different tracks into Ableton Live at approximately the same tempo using different settings. I also recorded a track using Jogging House's new Tonal Drifts instrument pack. I stretched a couple sections so they would slowly drift out of phase. It's my interpretation of shadows getting longer as the afternoon sun moves lower down on the horizon. Not sure whether I'm 100% satisfied with how this turned out, but I enjoyed the process.
