This is one of my absolute favorite tracks you've EVER made Moemaw Naedon. I got some issues with a small number of rhymes done by Calig Kontra elsewhere, but you? You've only been consistently cool and inspiring in a way that has made me an instant fan the moment I heard you. Honestly, it's blatantly obvious what a positive influence on Calig your style and flow has been too. This track though! Your lines effect me in ways that are deeply personal, and uncannily familiar. It feels like some strange psychedelic synchronicity is happening, and I hope life allows me to one day meet you, because I want to investigate and see if that synchronicity is mere coincidence, or something deeper...

Moemaw Naedon & Calig Kontra’s debut collaborative album, 'Cult Theatre,' is a celebration of surreal, grimy hip-hop that comes to life through visually provocative lyrics, experimental songwriting, and equally chilling and booming production. The entire record is produced by longtime collaborator Pyramid Tapes, the New Orleans beatsmith who surrounds the emcees with smoky, macabre instrumentals.

When Calig came up with the idea for the project, 'Cult Theatre' just clicked because he heard the album as “a soundtrack to an old grindhouse-type film from a projector screen.” Moemaw knew they had the right name, too: “I thought it was perfect since we’re both so visual with our bars and the album has a non-stop cohesive feel to it, like a movie, and the vibe is dark and psychedelic in typical ‘cult’ fashion.”

That vibe is apparent from the jump as the two emcees get underway on the opening track, “A New Abyss,” a sinister jaunt through “broken beer bottle glass and microphone booth bits.” Moemaw and Calig keep the pace on the ensuing eight cuts that include a woozy back-and-forth banger on “Pass the Vodka” and a dream collaboration with Lord Goat (f/k/a Goretex of Non Phixion) on “Witches Sabbath.”

Another instant standout is “Future Dystopia,” which Calig calls his favorite track. “Moemaw blacks out on that verse and hook,” he explains. “Plus I think it summarizes the album pretty well.” It’s actually that shared reverence for one another’s craft that makes Cult Theatre such a success. Moemaw and Calig don’t only sound great together on the record; they’re also quick to praise the other with rich details that only two close collaborators could really understand. And with Cult Theatre sounding this damn good, we can only hope that they bless the hip-hop community with more music in the future.

Moemaw Naedon and El Da Sensei connect for “Off The Path,” a hypnotizing new slapper that showcases their tongue-twisting bravado over the head nodding production from C.Scott. It all fits into the premise that both rappers are “Off The Path” with their approach to their art. And the same goes for C.Scott’s prog-leaning instrumental. 

“Off the Path” is available now through all major digital retailers and streaming platforms, and is set to appear on Moemaw & C.Scott’s collab LP, River Rats due out Sept. 2 via DSPs and cassette through Soul Slime Records. The cassette includes two bonus tracks, “Frog Work (instrumental)” and “P.K.E. (C.Scott Remix).”

“There is a lane for innovative, boom-bap hip-hop—and that’s what I’m about.”

Those are the words of rising rapper-producer Vice Souletric, whose new album, ‘Vice For President 2,’ proves that you can improve on a classic blueprint while making it your own.

The Lorain, Ohio native doesn’t waste a second on the record’s 11 tracks, which range from brief and powerful (“T.A.M.I.R.,” an ode to the horrific killing of young Tamir Rice by a police officer) to mellow and boastful (the Skyzoo-assisted “Stayin’ Out The Way”). And you’ll surely recognize that versatility on opening track “iRap,” a confident banger with thick, G-funk bass and a Dr. Dre-sampling hook via DJ NuEra.

Other standouts include lead single “Return Of The Black Man,” a fierce war cry featuring Talib Kweli, G. Huff, and Will Blaze, and the aptly titled “Respect The Legends” featuring King Magnetic. The latter is also the only track that Vice didn’t produce himself, as he landed the chance to spit over a 9th Wonder beat. The result is an ill dedication to Hip-Hop, which Vice drove home in speaking on the project.

“This album lets people know that I am serious and committed to contributing to the Hip-Hop culture through music,” he said. “I’m not going anywhere.”

While the remainder of the record is mostly a solo outing, don’t sleep on the features from Rapper Big Pooh and HiJinks’ appearance on the Native Tongues’esque “EIO.” The latter also shows up for “90s Sumthin,” a cut you’ll need on your warm-weather playlist this year. That goes for the entirety of ‘Vice For President 2,’ for that matter, as it’s a masterful demonstration of what it means to truly “do it yourself.”
