Itch(NIGHTCAP / Singapore, Japan)

DJ and a vinyl collector, based in Singapore.
His musical journey is inspired by the “local exotic funk a-go-go” music from Singapore and Nanyang/Nusantara region produced in 1960s to ’80s, such as Nanyang A-Go-Go or Hala-Hala, Malay Funk, Hokkien Disco, Cantonese Funk, Pop Yeh Yeh, Asian City Pop, and other underrated groovy exotic music.  Itch’s vinyl record DJ set specialises in discovering the Asian groove, introducing the forgotten local music gems to modern listeners to enjoy, and brings back nostalgic vibes for old-timers.
Itch has appeared in various events/festivals in Singapore, and also spinned in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Taipei, and Tokyo.  Currently, he is a resident DJ at Singapore Community Radio program “NIGHTCAP”, introducing Citypop and Asian Boogie.

Spring is barely on the horizon here in Ontario and we’ve been in a strange slushy stasis for the past few weeks. To help focus on warmer days my longtime friend Aaron Levin has put together a melter of a mix featuring 100% Canadian dance music from the past and present. Despite currently residing in Oakland, Aaron is no stranger to Canadian music and spent years at the helm of Weird Canada, a website, archive, and distributor passionately devoted to homegrown Cancon of all stripes. I’m thrilled to have Aaron on the show and his mix has helped shake off the winter doldrums.

In times where fantasy worlds are endangered, Saturns Drive creates his own. ‘Next Stop Nebula’ merges oceanic slide guitars and early synth digitalism with 90s inspired rhythms to get any sailors ship sailing.

Saturns Drive is a Berlin-based music project created by Elfy, a producer and DJ from New Zealand who draws inspiration from early sci-fi, exotica and library music, cosmic disco synthesizers, italo grooves and arpy electronics. He has recently been featured on the track "Parallel Panorama" by Saeko Killy and performs regularly along with other artists from Berlin's music community.

While PHONON's main interest lies in the early House sounds that once lit up Chicago and New York, he’s also always on the hunt for lesser-known records of different (brain-)danceable genres. 

This mix is the result of amazing hours @jan-abekrfcce spent in Japanese record shops during which Phonon mainly rummaged through boxes of domestic productions from the 80s and 90s.

Here some words from him, MFI / EAV asked him to share:

"I grew up in Singen (southwest Germany near the Swiss border) to the sounds of the Flamenco and Brazilian Guitar as well as Jazz - my father was a guitar and music teacher. I learned to play the trumpet and the drums (nowadays I turn to Synths and Drum machines.)  I have a thing for synth - Early Roland Pad sounds are my favorites.

In the context of music I like to research and understand historical contexts and roots and I try to translate that into my mixes. I started my collection with late 1980s House Music, loads of which I found when I studied & lived in NYC. 

I also lived in Milan for some years and return to Italy more than once a year. After that, I was in Leipzig. When traveling, I always try to find and bring back some special records, which might not be easily found back home."

Phonon lives nowadays in Berlin since 2019, although he travels and works remotely a lot. He has put up nights and DJed at Paloma, Beate Uwe and Bars. He also plays in Freiburg, Konstanz and countries where he spends time traveling/working remotely like in Italy, the US and Japan.

Paradise Mirage is a series of events and radio appearances that he organizes, dedicated to the early days of clubbing in the spirit of NYC and Chicago. www.paradise-mirage.com
