While somewhat successfully scraping that covid-rust off our shoulders, we had several moments of pure joy in the last few months. One of the joy-gems surely was the San Trancisco night, which returned to the club after a drawn-out sleep and it was an awakening of dragon-like proportions. All the louder since our resident @yanmmxiv, who has been kind of secretly digging trance tunes lately, joined the jam. He was incredible – the whole thing was – and hopefully this recording will transpire to you as a proof. If you’ll need to feel better, or straight away ecstatic, put it on and the gloomy skies won’t matter anymore.

Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this month’s transit is brought to us by @just-callmedaddy, who takes us through a polyrhythmic soundscape with percussive elements reminiscent of the drums of Carnaval. Weaving together murky synths, thought-provoking vocals, and jazz-inspired instrumentals, she combines her latest digs with the sounds rooted in her upbringing. As a member of FLINTA* collective Sugar Slip, her approach to dance music is powerfully intersectional, aiming to highlight Latin American producers and reclaim the club as a space to celebrate marginalized perspectives. Experimental and deconstructed, festive and combative, this mix serves as a powerful reminder of music as a tool in resistance, a heartbeat of communities, and in her words, a soundtrack of radical joy. 1. What was your inspiration for the mix?
Inspiration came from so many places. Whenever I am asked to record a mix, I like using the opportunity to record things I wouldn't usually have the chance to play in a club. I have been listening to a lot of experimental and jazz music. Recently, a friend introduced me to the work of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. I got immediately hooked, and had to open this mix with one of their songs, played together with this eerie-dreamy spoken track by Juan Ramos. The lyrics really spoke to me when I first heard it. This jazz-experimental nod will be a recurrent element in the mix.
 
The world is such a weird place right now, and recording a bouncy and sunny mix just felt unright. Then I remembered that Carnaval was just around the corner. I am from Brazil, and Carnaval is this special time of the year when people connect with their communities in bloc parties that last for days. These parties become a liminal space of transgression, offering a celebratory freedom of expression synonymous with challenging the powers that be. Throughout history, Carnaval has been a bastion of Brazilian resistance, led by the beat of the drums and some radical joy. I took inspiration from this date - I wanted this mix to be an exercise of bold experimentation and rhythmic complexity. You will hear a lot of percussions resembling Carnaval drums throughout this mix - sometimes they will feel festive, sometimes they will feel combative.
 
Towards the middle of the set I included some Brazilian history, with a song that brings vocals by Rio’s funk legend, Mc Carol. I close the mix with a bit of an oddball, my favorite song from the latest EP by São Paulo’s Teto Preto. The lyrics say “just give me my money back”. It is an internal joke Brazilians have, where we tell Europeans, particularly Portuguese, to give back our “gold”. I suppose humor is our way of denouncing the historical harms of colonialism. 
 
2. How has your local music scene shaped your sound as an artist / approach to nightlife?
I am from Rio de Janeiro, but I spent most of my early adulthood in São Paulo. The two cities are so different - the landscape, the people, the vibe. I think this contrast influences a lot my approach to music. This blending of different tempos, elements, genres... Whenever I am playing something, I want the music to celebrate diversity and push boundaries - of sound, body, and mind.
 
I am currently living in Vienna, and this mix is also influenced by the local scene here. I am lucky to be surrounded by very inspiring people from so many different places. This mix is a result of my exchanges with them, the music we send to each other, and the kindness and support we mutually share.

Luca Tresque debuts on Unrilis with a driving techno EP that has raw sounds and hypnotic grooves.

Hailing from Austria, Luca Tresque is the co-owner of Splatter imprint and has released on Florian Meindl's FLASH, Robert Hoff's trau-ma, and Alex Bau's Credo. Known for his exceptional DJ skills being a resident at Kantine Club, he has also played at the respected KHIDI, Werk, and Grelle Forelle venues.

Unrilis is a record label Co-Founded by the late Rino Cerrone, and Luca Tresque is the latest artist to join the imprints roster.

"Oxygen" is the EP's title track, and it layers trippy vocals with a hulking synth line stretched over high-velocity percussion. Next up, "Dunes Everywhere" has a murky lead synth combining with fizzing hi-hats and a ground shaking low-end. "Exotic Frog" closes the release with atmospheric pads and croaking synth bursts combined with intense claps and a hammering kick.
