Adventure Timeless: Still Wet

Thought this'd be a perfect one for Valentine's Day coming up. This came about after a series of serendipitous events in early december 2013, talking with Ness, The Herbal Hustler about Bill, led to making a mini-bill mix (maybe i'll put that out one day if I expand on it), to watching the documentary "Still Bill" and on the plane ride home, I thought to myself "I'd like Just the Two Of US alot better without Grover's sax" so, I started working on it just for fun. Well, here's how it turned out. Just the Vocal Bill parts chopped, some magic that could only come from the great heart of Bill Withers! 

 Time WIth You is a personal one, lots of heart opening while I was working on it, and what was going on with myself, my wife, my best friend Ness, and her boyfriend. It's about spending one-on-one time with those you love, which is so so important when the relationship is deep. Whether it's a: mother, father, grandma or grandpa, brother or sister, wife or husband, daughter or son, homie, friend, soul mate, or twin soul. Whether renewing an old friendship, or starting a new one, all the words you need to voice how you feel were sung by Bill 30 some years ago.

So, to dedicate, on my travels, I of course interact and sometimes hangout with the Girlfriends & Wives of my Musical Peers. They always tell me the SAME THING. "Gaff, make sure you make the most of your time with your lady when you're at home" So, really, this song is for them, missing their men, and to all my brothers travelling or touring on the road, "make the most of your time with YOUR ladies when you're at home!"

Stylin' first aired on 3RRR-FM in July 2001, and has occupied the Friday 12-2pm timeslot ever since. 10 years and 500 shows later and Ennio Styles has featured many of the artists here as guests of the show as well as others like Q-Tip, Carl Craig, John Legend, Hudson Mohawke, Terry Callier, Juan Atkins, Dam Funk, Mad Mike (UR), The Bamboos, Mark Pritchard, Roy Ayers, Fat Freddy's Drop, Jazzanova, Gilles Peterson, Seiji, Common, Mulatu Astatke, The Pharcyde, Outkast and Bugge Wesseltoft. If you like any of these artists, there will be something for you on Stylin' 500. 

Part 1 presents the soulful side of hip hop, jazz, boogie and, er, soul. 

Native American/black singer Kyra Climbingbear gets things started with the anthemic rock-tinged 'Champion' featuring a verse from John Robinson (Scienz of Life). Micah St James and Imani (of The Pharcyde) represent the LA hip hop scene, with Imani riding a smooth Spaceboy Boogie X production previously only available in Japan. Amin PaYnE and Andras Fox are two upcoming Melbourne beatmakers, here demonstrating their soul-chopping skills. Atlanta jazz/soul vocalist Nonameko lays it down over a sweet production from Tanya Morgan's Von Pea. Monica Blaire (who has sung for Waajeed/PPP, Andres and Black Milk) teams up with her Detroit-based Silent Riot crew for a nearly acappella version of Zapp. US vocalist Olivier Daysoul has collaborated with Hudson Mohawke, Onra and Oddisee and teams up here with London's Andre January for an unreleased uptempo jam that should appeal to fans of Prince and Outkast's Andre 3000. 

Lanu and Mark de Clive-Lowe (half of The Politik with Bembe Segue) have been friends of Stylin' since the beginning and explore the space between jazz, soul and club music. The late Abby Joyce delivers a heavenly vocal on Lanu's tune. Germany's First Touch stay true to the 80s boogie sound in all but the title's reference to '2011 Mix'! 

Four emotional vocal jazz tunes round out Part 1. John Ellis is a Mancunian keyboardist who has played with Cinematic Orchestra and DJ Vadim. 'He Speaks (Live)' by LA's Nailah was first played on Stylin' in 2009, setting off a chain of events that led to Gilles Peterson airplay and gigs, collaborations with Robert Glasper, Nicola Conte and Jose James and a record deal with Universal (as Nailah Porter). Since then this song has been unavailable and Ennio Styles' edit (which includes three minutes of additional material from the original performance) is released here for the first time. The WES Group hail from Washington DC and here offer some gospel-tinged jazz with shades of their Baltimore friends Fertile Ground. Versatile NYC-based trumpeter and vocalist Leron Thomas closes Part 1 on a reflective note with a jazz ballad reminiscent of Tribe's Doug Hammond.

We remember the day our manager came into our studio aka drew's living room apartment to show us this new band he was going to sign to Disruptor Records. The first record he played us was this tune Overload and we were hooked! We had never heard of them before but we proceeded to listen to 10 more songs of theirs and we were blown away. Their sound was so refreshing from the instruments to their vocals. There was a summertime quality to all their music that couldn't be denied. Flash forward a couple months and we had the chance to meet them in LA. We proceeded to do what any dudes meeting for the first time would do, we through a mansion party at a buddies got totally blackout and missed the call time for what was our Let You Go music video. Flash even more forward and Overload is taking over top40 and they are about to drop their next single Dreams! The boys were cool enough to let us take a shot a remixing overload and putting our touch on it. The song itself is already just so amazing and vibey... its like drinking coconut water on a beach while getting a foot rub and someone somewhere else transferring large sums of money into your bank acct. SO we figured why change that and just change the foot rub to a back massage and money to a kiss from a chick you really are into but didn't know she was also into you.... So without further adieu... our remix of Overload!
