My first attempt at composing a Carnatic piece. This is based on the kapi raga. Kāpi is a popular rāga in Carnatic music, the classical music of South India. Typically performed at slow and medium speeds, it is capable of inducing moods of devotion, pathos and sadness in the listeners. Hope you all like.

I've been working for a long time on this and its still not yet complete! I dont think i’ll even be able to say this is complete, because it just has soo much stuff in it! This is the best version I’ve come up with as of now.

This song needs no introduction from me. Its a universal favorite, something that catapulted Celine to her out of the world stardom. The song is such a melodious and moving song. I’ve tried to do justice to the feel of the song and the amount of emotion to it. I’ll let you guys be the judges!

James Horner - My heart will go on (Piano Cover)

My next piece is the theme song from the movie Requiem for a dream. Now this piece has a pretty interesting history. So let me take you through it. Yes you’ve to learn something before you get to listen to my songs :P .

Requiem is generally used in the context of a Requiem Mass, meaning a Mass (Church Mass) for the dead.

Now going back in history, around 1791, there was a brilliant composer and musician by the name Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, or Mozart :P . The count Franz von Walsegg commissioned Mozart to create a Requiem through a lot of agents, supposedly to take the work and call it as his own among his audience. Mozart was already very sick at that time. Even with his sickness, the genius composed the first movement of the song called the Requiem aeternam before he passed away! The count was willing to pay only half the money since only part of the work was completed. Hence his Widow approached other composers to help her out in finishing Mozart’s work. Joseph von Eybler, Franz Xaver Süssmayr and Maximilian Stadler and many others helped complete the song that has hence been called Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor.

Zoning back to our times, Clint Mansell, a famous Music composer decided to take Mozart’s Requiem as an inspiration and compose a Requiem named Lux Aeterna. This was orchestrated in many places like the title song for Requiem for a dream and in Lord of the Rings and so on.

The song itself is incredible powerful. This might be because of the fact that Death in itself is a very powerful entity in human minds. The original song is orchestrated. I’ve tried to capture the orchestration and the song’s mood into a piano cover. Just as usual, be my guest and let me know how I’ve done.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Requiem for a dream

This time its a contemporary song by a brilliant Italian composer called Ludovico Einaudi. You can definitely expect more songs from him by me, since I’m totally in love with his work!

Nefeli is a song that was love at first sight for me. The first time i heard it, I kept it on repeat mode for over 3 days and I just couldnt stop it! Its a beautiful song, and I hope you feel the song as you hear it. Hope you enjoy it.

Ludovico Enuadi - Nefeli

My next song is composed by the greatest musical genius of our time, Isai Gnani ILLAYARAJA! The Maestro is in my opinion the greatest composer of the current generation and could probably be the greatest composer of all time too! His grasp of classical music along with western concepts like orchestration, harmonies have made his number irresistible. He is 67 years old and his compositions are still vibrant and full of musical brilliance!

This song is from the movie Punnagai Mannan featuring Kamal Hassan and Revathi! For those of you who havent seen the movie, I would advice you to do so :) . For those of you who havent heard this song yet, I would seriously consider disowning you guys so please do go and listen to it soon ;) .

Here’s my attempt at the song! Before I finish, I have to give a BIG thank you to Naveen Jebaraj for the sheet music which is what enabled me to attempt this song! I really hope that more veterans start arranging Raja’s and Rahman’s songs.

Ilaiyaraaja - Punnagai Mannan Theme (Piano Cover)

Finally I picked up the courage to try this piece! This is a legendary piece that almost everyone knows. I think this is the only classical piece that the entire universe knows thanks to cars reversing and water dispensers everywhere :P .

Für Elise or (For Elise) was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Of course everyone knows Beethoven since he is the genius who composed and played even after he lost his hearing! This is only possible when the great could visualize the piece completely in his mind and is such a perfect virtuoso pianist, that he can mimic the sounds in the mind in reality without needing a feedback! What I feel is the biggest plus for Beethoven is that his pieces are very easily reachable by common folk. Compared to other classical giants like Bach, Choppin whos pieces arent easily appreciated, Beethoven’s style and elegance is easy appreciated by musicians and others alike.

The piece itself is a testimony for what I’ve mentioned above. Its based on A minor, with simple arpeggios on the left hand while the right plays the melody. Its such a simple piece that most people feel that its not even worth playing in a recital! But the piece has such an amazing level of expressiveness. This is a piece that can be played beautifully by one person while the other person can make it feel bland while playing the same notes. The piece also has three distinct stages, one is the recurring theme, that everyone is familiar. In between the recurring theme are two stanzas, that have very different moods. The first stanza is a very curious and very mischievous one. The second one is a stanza that emphasizes anger, and the cools down back to the recurring soft theme.

For me, this piece is one of the best compositions ever. I have to thank Valentina Lisitsa for her version of the piece which is what inspired me to try this in the first place. I hope I’ve done a reasonable amount of justice to this masterpiece and I hope you guys like it.

[Update] Made a better version on 23rd June after a lot of feedback that my tempo was waaaaay off. So I’ve slowed the piece down a little more and increased the pace of the faster sections! I’ll make a overall faster version a little later after more practice :)

Ludwig Van Beethoven - Bagatelle in A minor (Fur Elise)

Canon in D was composed by Johann Pachelbel in the 16th century. Thankfully, although most of Pachelbel’s compositions were lost, the canon survived and was re-discovered in the early 20th century. This is THE ideal wedding piece and I did learn it so I could play it at the wedding of two of my most favorite people in the world :) .

The piece as the name says, is set to D major. The original was scored for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gigue in the same key. Many many variations and arrangements for various different instruments have been made since the re-discovery. Some of the instruments that I love the Canon in are on the piano, harp, violin, rock guitar and of course the original instruments.

For piano alone there are many many variations of the Canon, arranged by a ton of awesome musicians. Lee Galloway is one such and his canon is one of the prettier cannons. After hearing Monica play it at the ABF recitals, I was really inspired by the song and its flow, and thought to give it a serious try. And I got a lucky recording a couple of days back. I know the beginning is a tad slow, but I wanted to play the opening slow to show the contrast in the song.

I can remember soo many wonderful moments full of life and happiness. Its such a shock, how you can lose everything in a second. I can remember the window in Ooty, the comedies in our wing, how you slapped chandra, the mass bumbs in diamond, holding poochi up over the parapet wall, our Bungee jump, racing thru Bangalore with u, ur many “advices” to us to play games but never play one urself. I can even now imagine, EXACTLY how you will react to the above statement. How can someone soo full of life just disappear! :’( I Miss u da!

This piece was recorded on Cubase 5. With the lead and the harmony played from a piano and rendered by Pianoteq. It was played from ear mostly. I've added percussions, a bit of strings and voices around the lead piano.
