Quiet Calling

Tiny Tim, 2022 (recorded 1978)

In 1998 I did some work for a friend. That friend was the late Martin Sharp, the artist. In Martin’s semi-open door artistic live in/haven house I spent five months, other than hanging out, once or twice a week transferring cassette tapes to minidisc that Martin, being a friend of the artist Tiny Tim, had recorded over the years. 

Martin always maintained that Tiny Tim (who in real life wasn’t tiny, he was tall) was a serious artist, thought of by many as a one song wonder with the song Tiptoe Thru' The Tulips With Me, perhaps then also his debut album, God Bless Tiny Tim (1968).
Sometimes Tiny would visit Sydney, or Martin would hook-up with him overseas, the tape recorder never far away, it was a good one too, Martin would be one to make sure of that.

The tape that this album is from is called the beer tapes, and was of a night after some events, perhaps a party, maybe disco, whatever, in 1978, Martin knew a lot of people. As I recall it the recording took place back at Tiny’s hotel room, in Sydney. Yes, a few beers were had - the recording session began around midnight. In between talking, as was his way, the troubadour could break into song at any moment. And this night was a special night, the reason being because Tiny was effected in a particular way in the old heartstrings, his conversation with Martin that night centered on women (early in the tape he rings one up, who is over in the US), love, what is it all about? Where had he succeeded, failed, what did he understand? Also, what is art? The tape is starkly, refreshingly honest - and although Tiny feels down at one point that night, at the beginning of the recording - it gives rise to some wonderful music, Yihweh working through him and to him, the songs themselves communicating something to him, to all.

I included most of the songs that Tiny sang on the night, leaving in also a smattering of dialogue.

The album was edited from a second generation cassette tape, no changes were made to the original sound.
I decided to let the album end where the tape ended.

I called this album, Tiny Tim.
