this piece is dedicated to all of the witches, warlocks, and queer people who were murdered as a part of witch-hunts worldwide 

this experiential sound piece invites the audience to get up and participate in a somatic exploration of gender, place, power, and cultures of violence. inspired by janet cardiff and her project the walk book, you are invited to listen to this while walking (perhaps in the nearest landfill or another kind of extractive/waste site of industrial capitalism) and/or listening while your body is still and eyes closed. 

this sound piece was created from two different walks the artist did. the first walk was in a part of town that is home to various industrial and disposal operations. it is also in the vicinity of valmont butte, a sacred site and burial site for arapahoe peoples who are original caretakers of so-called boulder, co. valmont butte is a volcanic dyke that runs east to west and it is situated above the confluence of two rivers. because of white settler industrial operations, the butte has become badly contaminated with radioactive mine tailings tainted with heavy metals (read more here: http://www.boulderweekly.com/news/the-ghosts-of-valmont-butte/). while walking in this area, the artist passes an excel power station, a recycling center, western disposal services, as well as a lot of unknown digging up of the earth with heavy duty machines. 

the second walk is located in the mountains and happens during a snow storm. both walks happen on arapahoe/ute territories. 

in this piece the artist contemplates their social identities identities of whiteness and queerness through lenses of settler colonialism, ecological trauma, and liminal/queer gender forms. they explore their specific relationship to colonial violence in regards to their race and their gender (being both a white, ancestrally european settler and genderqueer person). they seek to hold the trauma of the oppressor and the trauma of the oppressed within their own body. they walk a bridge in their psyche between the construction of the gender binary and the destruction of earth and culture(s). 

this piece asks complex questions of social and ecological landscapes. it asks questions of rupture, of breakage, of responsibility, of memory. borne out of the deep sorrow and calculated horror of tracking how so many places of extractive industry are built upon sacred sites deemed sacred by the indigenous folks of the land. borne out of the desire to hold gender liminality as sacred and worthy. deep gratitude to all the many beings who supported and inspired this project. gratitude to gesel mason and julia carr for stewarding the class that brought this piece into form. gratitude to the standing rock sioux tribe and indigenous peoples worldwide for their continued fight for rights to their land and ancestral remains. gratitude to all people everywhere who are resisting oppression, healing social and ecological traumas, and reaching for the just world we know is possible.
