1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I have been DJing and collecting records since my pre-teen years in the 80s. I always liked playing records, making music in bands, writing and talking about music and so forth.
My record collection has quite an emphasis on Hip Hop, Funk, Soul and Jazz, but you can find almost anything somewhere in there. When I was younger I always liked the fastest track on a record the most, as I was a (probably hyperactive) energetic dancer. And I loved knowing the words and stops and breaks of records. A tendency to be nerdy about these things. It helps with song selection in sets.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

It is a very practical format to play, I think. 170 records in the box and off to a good night with music. My dear friend Keb Darge put me on in the end, when I was lucky enough to have my brother living in London and Keb inviting me to DJ at his club nights. A box of 45s and off I went. 
That kind of pushed me over the edge from compilations and LPs finally, I guess. 

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

It is a little Hip Hop heavy with some Soul, Funk and odd bits in there. I was going through a stack of records with some brand new releases, some records I purchased in the last months, a few releases on the Origu label and a few favorites from somewhere in another stack that was right next to that. It is a few reissues, originals and re-edits. All records I enjoy. I just started with the first one and let the records find their way in my hands...

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Well, I think I started collecting records back in 2003 shortly after I've started producing.  I was totally into Downbeat music at that time, labels like Ninja Tune and Tru Thoughts with artists like Quantic, Bonobo, Blockhead and TM Juke were right up my alley and I bought all their records. Around the same time I started producing. First I also did Downbeat music, but I quickly was getting into the Funk/Soul thing and released several records over the next decade. 2016 I somehow had enough of this sound and started working on Downbeat music again, because originally I wanted to release that kind of music when I was getting into music producing. In 2018 my first Keno album 'Around The Corner' was released, two years later the collaboration album 'Transatlantyk' I did with Tristan de Liège from Los Angeles was released. Later this year I will release a collection of remixes and one offs in the 'Out Past The Current' album and for 2022 I plan to release my third Keno studio album. After being more than a decade part of the electronic Funk/Soul scene it feels like coming home producing Downbeat music again. The last 5-6 years I started listening more and more to Downbeat music again and luckily there are great new albums released pushing this genre to the next level.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

It's a nice and handy format, simple and short.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?  

Well the mix contains some old and some modern cuts, some live Band songs and some produced more beat driven tracks. I've tried to vary a bit between live and produced music trying to put them together.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music?

My music is on most of all platforms available, I like Bandcamp a lot. I also have a radio-show called 'Motor Jazz' every second Friday on Soho Radio London, but on the radio show I also play heavy club tunes, not just Downbeat, Electronica  and Jazz. I deejay ocassionally at the Mojo Jazz Café in Hamburg and sometimes on Festivals and clubs.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.
Well, since over 40 years I am collecting records. New Wave (later called Post Punk) was my musical socialisation in the 80s. Later followed by strong researches in 60s music and then Black Music. Funk, Soul, Disco and lots of Jazz. Then came Brazilian music in all genres.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.
In my special case 45/7 is not valid. All Brazilian sevens play with 33rpm (and have a small hole) That's the reason why I called my mix Compactos em 33. Compactos is the portugues word for singles. I always loved the idea of having a unique track on a small record. A musical gemm, not hidden between other tracks on album, but alone on one side of a record. With his own cover artwork in the best case. And - even better - a track that was only released on seven inches. A unique piece of art.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?
The first half an hour is dedicated to Boogie and disco. Not the strongest musical discipline in Brazil but the examples chosen are in my humble opinion masterpieces and have not been rereleased. Well at least not all of them ... Tamanqueiro has been pressed recently as original facsimile by Rush Hour. The only seven ever made by Elizio de Buzios. Kaito is pretty unknown. Probably Cara Feia is also the only record he made. Elza Soares who recently died aged 92 in Rio is undoubtedly one of the tough queens of samba. Here's a nice Boogie on the flip side of an 80s seven. Carlos Dafé and Emilio Santiago are two well-known singers with a strong groovy attitude. Miss Lene played pop music and disco in the early 80s. Sorridente is a killer uptempo disco track. Waldirene is one of these hundreds of female singers in Brazilian pop music who is nailing it down on Queima como fogo. The Free Sound Orchestra is strongly connected to the Brazilian label Som Livre, Free sound in portuguese, an orchestra and choir that did hundreds of soundtracks for the telenovelas on Brazilian television. Rush is a masterpiece. Similarities to Quincy Jones' Summer in the city are purely coincidental... Melo da cuica is from Azymüth's first 4-track EP. A very reduced futuristic bass driven song from 1975. Carlos Mendes, guitarist and singer/songwriter presents his easy and airy Hora só. Typical Minas sound. Grupo Ébano has released their music on CD only. But I decided to make an acetate of two of the best tracks. So here's Pé no Chão from a seven! Sociedade Anônima made one seven in 1972. Stunning sounds on this one that remind me very much of New Wave of the early 80s. Psych Prog? Typical prog sounds brings us Stilo Set. Something completely different is coming from a young band called Os Tremendões on their only 4-track EP. Fresh Mod psych sounds on organ. Another female singer I can't find any info on is Watusi. But the fresh and naive way to sing speaks for itself. We are amidst the sounds of the so called jovem guarda, the young generation, maybe beat generation of Brazil. Gerson Côrtes who got fame as one of the leading figures in the funk movement later in the 70s named Gerson King Combo then, started as a beat musician. Tito Madi instead is a representative of the velha guarda, a Samba crooner. We hear a tasteful Samba Jazz from him. Followed by Djalma Dias and his version of Cidade Vazia. Continental records releases from the 60s are always appealing to collectors. Here's a singer called Rahyr with a track called Garota Castelinho from '64. Last but not least Maria Lucia with her version of Maria Moita, an often covered track composed by Carlos Lyra and Vinicius de Moraes.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Hey Im Nadim a 22 year old DJ and Beatmaker from Cologne. I started collecting records when I lived in England in 2015 and since then I haven’t stopped spending most of my money for vinyl. I think I have around 1.500 records at the moment in my flat. A lot of my records (especially jazz) also came from my fathers collection who is a jazz musician and my grandmother + her friends collection who are all big jazz fans but didn’t listen to their records anymore.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

What I love about 7 inches is that the sound is always dope and that I always have them for any set that I play. Whether traveling from Budapest to Berlin and then to Cologne my 7” are always there to back me up!

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

Honestly it was a pretty spontaneous mix haha. I just went after what felt right (which is what i usually do when I dj) and just went with the flow. 

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

You can follow me on Instagram which is where I post on my stories where I play @nadimbrah ,this usually happens twice a week in bars, clubs or events in Cologne but sometimes I do play in other cities like Berlin or Hamburg (which I definitely want to do more!). I don’t really record dj sets as I play enough in front of people and like I said before really like to try and feel the room and adapt my sound to the vibe that I feel. I did record 3 previous sets @dublab and I’ll try to record more sets in the future.

FOUR TO THE FLOOR x ELBJAZZ FESTIVAL on Friday 2nd June 2017. Deep down the soulful basements of the MOJO.

A mutual love for Motown, hip-hop and early house music and an extraordinary sense for groove are the cornerstones of the Detroit Swindle phenomenon. Since 2011 the producer duo redefined house music while maintaining it's true spirit. In the past they've been working with musicians like Kerri Chandler, Seven Davis Jr., Mayer Hawthorne, or most recently Tom Misch. For their infectious live shows they recruited no other than german keyboard & talkbox virtuoso Lorenz Rhode (Rundfunk-Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld).

Heist Recordings buddy and man of thousand aliases Frits Wentink will round up the line-up. His productions are unique and approach house in a more unconventional way: Hard hitting beats, jumpy basslines and jazzy detuned chords define the distinct sound of the Bobby Donny labelhead.
