This was written in Ireland about 10 years ago. It was written for Winkles Pub in Kinvara that has since been torn down. I used to go there every Tuesday for the singer-songwriter session. I don't think I missed ONE for 4 or 5 years. So many amazing musicians have played there informally. Whoever happened to be there that night would get a treat. John Prine, Sharon Shannon, Donovan and so many others. --- This song makes the perfect New Year's Eve song. (you'll see what I mean when you get to the end of the track:)

Good Old Days

I used to live on a large property in South Austin that put on the occasional public event. One weekend there was a DJ festival with electronic dance music and the like. (NOT my favorite music) There was glass blowing demonstrations, food truck, vendors and fireworks. People pitched their tents on the field beside me but there was little sleeping going on. After ear plugging my ears and getting a couple of hours sleep I awoke at 8 am to the dance music resuming (or had it even stopped!?) I parted my blinds and peered out the groggy festival-ers standing by the food truck. I looked up to the overcast sky and urged it to rain, please. Then I saw myself hunched like an old woman croaking expletives at the young people and I thought "oh no have I come to this already?" And so I sat down an wrote this song.

As I was recording the music for Shakespeare's Sonnet 106, here in lockdown, in isolation, it seemed to be speaking about earth which has been given a well deserved break during this pandemic. There are dolphins coming to visit the canals of Venice, unpolluted skies over Los Angeles, wild animals venturing into cities to have a look around. If only we could use this terrible situation as a catalyst to find a better way to manage our business here on earth. Meanwhile, the earth is getting some beauty sleep.

Shakespeare's Sonnet 106

I teach special education at a school with a classical education model. Back before this shut down due to the pandemic, I would hear the students' choral recitations. One class would "invade" another in a poetry war to see which class ran out of poems first. This experience has inspired me to sing some of these poems. Here's one of the results. I hope you like it. This was written for a friend of mine who no longer lives on this side of the story. I told her when I first met her that with a name like Leona I was bound to write her a song before long. Sadly she never got to hear it. I sang it at her funeral. It was a deep honor. xx

I'll Carry You

Train whistles are beautifully mournful. The train whistle at the beginning of this is the actual whistle from train that passed the place I used to live, like a friend saying helloooo every morning. (listen for the chunky sound of Richard Bowden's bouzouki playing)

5 AM Freight

In the darkest hour it's nice to have a name to call. Be it someone you love or a Deity you believe in is not for me to say. Either way this song is meant to be up-lifting.

Canadian Aussie Mo McMorrow has a bit of an Irish lilt and a Texas twang after long residencies overseas. She is a veritable traveling carnival of creativity delighting audiences with well-crafted songs that are funny,  uplifting, dark, mysterious, powerful (not always at the same time). She can grab a cliche by its neck and twist its head off. Mo is a lyric lovers dream.
