Moments In Love is back after a long hiatus with a new mix from Chicago's @shaunjwright

One of my all-time favorite DJs, Shaun has a unique ability to work a crowd into an ecstatic frenzy, reading and manipulating the energy of a room by seamlessly shifting through genres all while demonstrating impeccable track selection. Nights I've spent at their SmartBar residency have often reached moments of dance floor nirvana (once literally by layering a Smells Like Teen Spirit Accapella over a pounding techno beat), the moments at the club you carry with you for a long time.

After months of sharing music while working at Gramaphone Records, I approached Shaun to do a mix focused on tracks with lower BPMs and sounds they don’t get to explore as often in their DJ sets. Shaun more than delivered, turning in a mix that merges slowed down house, acidic aboriginal downtempo from Australia, experimental Japanese synth-pop, reggaeton, spaced out euro-disco, and ending on a serene jazzy vibe.

Moments In Love #8-Shaun J. Wright

Drasii is a hardware-based electronic music duo formed by multi-disciplinary artists Chris Kalis and Lisa Armstrong. Formed as an off-shoot of Chicago-based electronic ensemble Chandeliers, the duo has been performing live, DJing, and self-releasing music as Drasii on their imprint Shmee Records since late 2021. For their Moments In Love mix, the duo pulls from their years of experience performing underground electronic music and producing and hosting the weekly electronic music show Chando Radio (@chandeliers) on WLPN-LP Chicago Lumpen Radio with fellow Chandeliers member Scott McGaughey. Chris and Lisa split track selection duties equally, then began working out different sequences and edits with a final cut completed by Chris. The resulting mix demonstrates an expert sense of narrative flow, building and releasing tension as it shifts through the many sounds under the Balearic/cosmic umbrella while slowly increasing the tempo over its 80 minutes.

Chris currently lives in Chicago and teaches at DePaul University, he also co-hosts a monthly residency at Life on Marz Community Club in Bucktown called SENDERS that broadcasts live to Lumpen Radio. Lisa currently lives in Los Angeles and teaches at CalArts and has another radio show called Full Bleed on moonglow.fm.

Moments In Love #9-Drasii

For the 10th entry in our mix series we have received a new transmission from academic, world adventurer, and king of the wrong-speed record Joe Greenbaum. I first met Joe at a Chicago underground party, and got to know him while he was working at Gramaphone Records. For about 2 years I got to witness Joe work his turntable magic weekly at WNUR. His radio show saw him flexing his eclectic taste and adventurous use of time-stretching to blend tracks together, often pitching records up or down 50% or more. On many occasions the tracks he would play would actually be Trance. Gabber, or Drum n bass records morphed beyond recognition. For his Moments mix, Joe starts us off with a pitched sound collage that slowly morphs into a drug chug beat, gradually moving into italo and disco, before closing us out with slowed down acid-trance.
