This is the third piano solo release of 2024 by Hovig Nassanian. He explains: “There is so much music and so many songs highlighting life’s problems and how they impact us – feeling down, blue, miserable, heartbroken. At the opposite end of the spectrum, we have plenty of music about feeling great, the sun shining, being on top of the world.

When I started writing this piece, I wanted to capture the emotions of something more illusive and undervalued: the feeling of just…well…of just feeling better.

So this piece is for those days, or hours, or even moments when the pain is a bit less, the worries not as intense, the worst-case scenario averted. No guarantee that it will continue getting better…no guarantee that it won’t get worse again…but even so, choosing to celebrate the better moment we are in and being grateful for it.

Ironically, the day I recorded this on the piano was not one of my better days, but by the end of the session, the music did lift me a up a bit. I hope it does the same for you also.

The cover artwork for this release is by my sister, Hasmig. I really liked this painting of hers because of the gleam of hope and brightness spreading from the inside-out. She needs to paint more, don’t you agree? Hasmig and I are very different personalities; you will often find us teasing each other to no end, disagreeing and arguing about so many things. But in more recent years, we have had similar journeys of dealing with mental and emotional challenges, so it is particularly pleasing to collaborate with her on this project.”

Rain, Water and Life 

(III) Life - The rain as water brings "(III) Life".

To the south of my city of Dublin are the Wicklow Mountains onto which the rain falls "(I) Rain". The mountains are like giant cupped hands that receive the water and hold it in lakes, and it fills the lakes through rivulets, streams and rivers. "(II) Water". Two of Dublin's Rivers come from this source and all the drinking water for two million people. The rain as water brings "(III) Life". The water for all the food growing in the plains and all the flowers and trees comes from these sources too.

The three movements are
(i) Rain
(ii) Water
(iii) Life

This recording was made by the Galan Trio of Petros Bouras - piano, Dimitra Triantafyllou - violin and Marina Kolovou - cello, Babis Karasavvidis. Playing Flute with them on this recording is Zacharias Tarpagkos.  The recording has been made possible by these wonderful musicians and Three Essential Elements (https://three-essential-elements.org/). It will be officially released by Neuma Records on the album EMBRACE  in March 2025.
