DJ André @strobo opening the Mona Disco Room in October 2021. US born André Bush began playing as a DJ in Paris in the late 80s and was one of the first to pioneer the original US Garage House sound in the French capital. He held down various residencies during the House hey day in the 90s including the infamous after hours Kit Kat club and legendary Sunday Tea Dance at Le Palace. André's career has spanned over 40 years of dance music at clubs such as Les Bains Douches, Chez Regine or TGV ... today you can find him every month in the Mona Disco Room where he showcases Disco and foundational club culture classics.

Following up on the success of House Of Riviera released in 2019, Mona Musique releases House Of Riviera Volume 2 curated by label head @NickV, a compilation that pays homage to forgotten gems of the classic Italian House scene, circa 1991-1994. 9 tracks from the artists and record labels that were central to this seminal era of House music, including two never released cuts from Ricky Montanari, Davide Ruberto and Ivan Iacobucci.

House Of Riviera Vol. 2 unites a selection of tracks that encapsulates the atmosphere, the energy and creativity that reigned during that era. Starting where the first compilation left us, with, once again, Alex Neri and Marco Baroni opening the opus, this time as Green Baize and the wonderfully deep and harmonious « Switch Back » released in 1992 on Oversky Records. Night Communication take things closer to peak time with « Let’s Face The Music » released in 1994 on Hearbeat. Ivan Iacobucci brings two tracks to the project with the disco tinged « Get Up », released as Mental Detector on his very own label Hole in 1993, and the previously unreleased « Melt The Sun » extracted from a DAT tape from 30 years ago. The very deep and sensual « Load In Total Darkness » by More Heavy Soul, released on Irma sublabel Calypso in 1992, with vocal samples and beats lifted from Disco classics, is clearly a nod to the New York underground house scene. The second record opens with the Ricky Montanari Ethos Mama remix of Sima « Give You Myself » on D :Vision released in 1992. Ricky contributes a second track to the compilation, the original version of London made in 1993. Originally commissioned by Freetown Records as a track to feature the vocals of Arnold Javis, the project was unretained and almost scrapped, until Ricky decided to preserve a rough version on DAT tape before leaving the studio in the early hours of the morning. Workin’ Happily bring some late night dub energy with the percussive vocal snippets and grooving synth stabs of « Make My Move » released on UDP in 1993. The compilation closes as it opened with Alex Neri and Marco Baroni as Sound Set for « So In Love With You » a classic deep piano house track that samples the vocals of Colonel Abrams out on Oversky Records in 1992.

"House Of Riviera Vol. 2 compilation" - MMLP002 (snippets)

Victor Simonelli is New York house royalty. Born and musically-schooled in Brooklyn, Simonelli grew up in an era where disco was giving way to the new sound of house, and that dramatic intersection is where his heart and many of his great productions lie. He first made his name as a producer in the dying days of Nu Groove with Groove Committee’s “I Want You To Know” in 1991. But it was the release of Feel So Right by Solution, an international smash, that guaranteed an excess of airmiles DJing in Japan, Europe and beyond. Although it was as a house producer that Simonelli forged a reputation, his influences came more from the New Jersey sound detonated by Tony Humphries at Zanzibar whose bullets were supplied by Blaze, Smack and Paul Simpson.

Set recorded live at La Mona in November 2022 in the House room, which is the basement club at La Bellevilloise, Paris 20e.

Recorded live at La Mona on 13th April 2024 with @mikeagentx playing from 1 until 3 am. 900 people came through the doors, with the night on from 10pm until 530 am on the two floors of La Bellevilloise in Eastern Paris. Also on the same night in the basement room Tijo Aimé who played the closing set and Nick V who warmed up with Mogwai giving a House Dance class at the start. In the top room Julien Lebrun and DJ André played Afro, Disco, Funk and classics and Mutekirena giving a Waacking dance class. Mike played some unreleased tracks also during his set. Nick V @nickv was born in Manchester but for the last three decades has been an integral part of the scene in Paris. His La Mona events, which he talks about elsewhere in this issue, are a dance culture party running since 2008 and "exploring the relationship between dance and electronic music," which "often sees dance enthusiasts sharing the floor with house music heads. La Mona has "long celebrated the LGBTQ scene, catering for the Parisian community and encouraging alternative dances such as Vogueing, Waacking and many more which were birthed out of the early disco and house scene in the US."

As a DJ, record collector, audiophile and crate digger, Nick V's sound traverses through disco, deep techno, broken beat, boogie and dancefloor jazz while keeping house music at the core of everything. This cover mix for 5 Mag Issue 214 is the perfect encapsulation of that.

Recorded live at La Mona on Sat 14th Dec 2024 with @atjazz playing from 030 until 345 am in the House room (basement club) of La Bellevilloise. Also on the bill that same night were SP_Sunny and Nick V, aswell as Jihene Ba who gave a House Dance Class at the start. It was a privilege to be able to feature Atjazz at La Mona and over 900 people came through the doors to listen to his set, his second appearance at La Mona after an initial set in 2015. We unintentionally left the mic open on the DJbooth so you might able to hear shouts and whistles at different points of the mix adding some real life context to the sonics dispensed. We hope you enjoy the mix as much as we did !

We've had a few screams from the dancefloor for the UK disco don and dedicated vinyl digger to come back. So here he is again at Mona in July 2016.

Calling once again on the production skills of @Hugo-LX - who featured on Mona Musique’s debut release - ‘NY Collage’ reminds us why he is a firm favourite with label boss @NickV. A standout soulful bassline and trademark Hugo LX drum beat, makes this a sophisticated choice to lift up the dancefloor.
Over on the B side is a remix from man of the moment @Kaytronik The DJ/producer veteran, also known as Karizma, has reworked the track to almost beyond recognition. Deep and dreamy, a new bassline gives it that raw kick, evocative of London in the later hours of the night.
Closing off the EP is a remix of ‘Drifting Away’, Hugo LX’s aforementioned Mona Musique debut. Crafted by Ambroise Boret aka Ambrose, the production head behind releases on late 90s House labels Kif SA and Basenotic, he is also the imprint’s studio engineer. A fan of the Kenlou/MAW era, Ambrose’s rework remains true to the deepness of the original cut, but mixes things up with a tougher, harder-hitting edge and wonky keys.

Ahead of its forthcoming compilation “House Of Riviera” Mona Musique releases a sampler EP that contains three tracks selected by label manager @NickV , taken from the golden age of Italian House Music, two of which are exclusive to the EP.

Side A is “I Have Got It” by @RickyMontanari and Davide Ruberto under the alias Riviera Traxx, a moniker shared with various other Riviera producers. Released in 1997, this is the only track that is out of the 1991/1993 time scale that the compilation focuses on, standing alone thanks to its tough hypnotic drum beat and diva vocal stabs that are very reminiscent of the Junior Vasquez NY Sound Factory era. This was initially featured on Riviera Traxx 4 in 1997, the fourth and final release of the cult “Riviera Traxx” series on legendary Italian label Irma records.

On the B side are two cuts that are typical of the deep and emotional vibe of classic Riviera House productions of the early 90s. Firstly @Ivan-Iacobucci, Fabrizio Cini and Nicola Dragani deliver “Tribal Love” under the name of Anxious. Initially released in 1992 this was the B side cut of the Saxample EP the first release of Hole records one of the first underground House labels in Italy run by @Ivan-Iacobucci that enjoyed over 30 releases over the 10 following years. Subway Ground Master complete the release with the superb “Queensway” taken from their only ever release in 1992 on Calypso, a sub-label of Irma records.

Over 25 years of digging, and more than 2 years in curation. @NickV ’s debut compilation pays homage to forgotten gems of the classic Italian House scene, circa 1991-1993.
In the early 1990s, Italy hosted one of the most flourishing scenes in the burgeoning world of House music. Whilst the majority of Europe was only just beginning to digest the arrival of this new musical genre born in the US, Italian clubs, DJs and labels were hot on the heels of their counterparts in the already established scenes of New York and London. The clubs of the Adriatic coast – also known as the Italian Riviera – principally concentrated around Rimini and Riccione, were full every weekend with crowds gathering to dance long into the early hours of the morning. The soundtrack was provided by the major US and UK acts from the day but also local resident DJs that had been honing their trade since the early 80s in the clubs and in the studio. By the early 90s, Italian House music was regularly exported around the world with labels such as UMM, Zippy, D-Vision, MBG, Flying, Palmares, DFC and Irma releasing tracks inspired by the original New York House and Garage sound, but with a very different, unique and emotional take. Distinct from both Italo Disco and Italo House, this was the specific aesthetic that was to become the House sound of the Riviera, the soundtrack of the golden era of Italian House music.
 
Nick V’s compilation on Mona Musique brings together 8 iconic tracks from this specific period, covering the whole spectrum of the riviera sound. From the powerful vocal tracks by Korda and Be Noir to the dubbier cuts by Syncopate and Underground Ghosts, without forgetting of course the characteristic Riviera deepness with tracks from Subway Ground Master, Centric House, Groove Sense and Optik. Artists featured include legendary DJs and producers from the day Ricky Montanari, Alex Neri, Enrico Mantini, MBG and Ivan Iacobucci. The compilation comes in a double gatefold sleeve with liner notes by Nick V illustrated by flyers and photos from the original Riviera days. This is a DJ friendly 45 RPM vinyl only release (due du licensing restrictions), all tracks have been remastered with the sound staying true to the dynamics of early 90s production. To be released on 20th May 2019 on Mona Musique.

Mona team summer holidays mix 2019

French House and Boogie maestro producer musician and DJ @tomlaroye came to open Mona in December 2019 with a mix that traversed all genres Soulful from Boogie, Disco, House to Broken Beat. At the forefront of the French broken beat scene in the early 2000s, Laroye's career has taken him to span diverse musical genres such as Boogie Disco and Afro House, with always an ever present Soulful touch of musicality that characterises his music.
