Jecklin Disk

Comparison of stereo imaging using a Jecklin disk and two Behringer B5 omnis. The Jecklin disk was invented by a German sound engineer of the same name and provides a near-binaural recording capability while still remaining pleasant when played back with speakers as opposed to headphones.The same microphones, amp, etc are used in the two back to back recordings but the disk is removed. This is a demo of me walking past the apparatus first with the disk installed and then with the disk removed.

ABOUT THE ALBUM:

April 2013 will see Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk, the pioneer of Continuous Music, return with his first release on UK’s contemporary music label Erased Tapes. Entitled 'Corollaries', the album was recorded and produced with the help of Peter Broderick, Nils Frahm, Martyn Heyne and label founder Robert Raths, who decided it’s time to share the great musical legacy of their new found friend. Or as Melnyk put it: ‘Where were you guys when I was thirty?’

IN HIS OWN WORDS:

‘My first encounter with Peter was at the Ambientfestival in Cologne, when I came into the cathedral where he was playing along with Nils. I was amazed and enthralled by the beauty and power of their music. The colours and majesty of the cathedral coupled with their music made it a great experience I will never forget. The music seemed to come out of the great stone pillars of the cathedral and from the very walls. It was an ecstatic moment. And I was so pleased that after his show, Peter came and spoke with me about my music and things, which was so nice since he is a gentle soul. Some time later, Peter contacted me with an invitation to come visit him in Berlin and try creating some music together. 

I arrived in Berlin with some apprehension over what our collaborations would be like. I had not played improvisation with other ambient musicians before, having worked solo for all these past years. So it was such a relief to start playing at his studio and hear his wonderful input. He was adding a beautiful and delicate dust cover of sounds and pearly effects that cast a lovely sparkle over the piano music --- I loved it.  

My piano music was happy with this new dimension of sounds. Peter just felt, in his natural way, the right things to do. It was a thrill to hear Continuous Music in some new clothes! And with the addition of Nils and Martyn, we all felt the beautiful spell of the communal flow as the music carried us into wonderful spaces.’  – LUBOMYR MELNYK

The album artwork was created by American contemporary artist Gregory Euclide, best known for his sculptural relief work and cover art for Bon Iver. Euclide was listening to early mixes of the recordings on repeat whilst creating the two paintings contained in the record, describing his visual counterpart to Melnyk's work as 'a continuous cycle of growth and decay'.

“Senur” first chapter.

In 10th of February 2013 I recorded a concert with Amateur symphony orchestra. 
The program contained a wonderful melody “Senur” composed in four chapters by Sigurður Sævarsson. It was composed for string orchestra and obo. Both the orchestra and the soloist, Guðrún Másdóttir, played it flawless. 
I was pretty happy with the recording result, even though the concert hall (a church) sounded terrible for recording. It has a very harsh sound and difficult peaks in some resonance frequencies. 
Over the orchestra I used a Jecklin disk with a double pair of mics, parallel MKH8020 and MKH20 in 45°+45° (see following picture). 
Close to the soloist was a pair of MKH8040 and far behind in the hall was a pair of SE4400a with spaced Omni (70cm). 
 
Past months I have got a few emails where people ask me for a sound sample with my Jecklin disk. So this is it. Hereby is the first chapter of Senur. The only post work I do for this Soundcloud work out was turning off MKH8020 on the Jecklin disk and the SE4400a far behind in the hall. Then I increase the gain of MKH20 on the Jecklin disk about +8dB

"Senur" chapter one, with MKH20 on Jecklin disk

Silent Running

Recorded at the approach end of the Reading Air Show with a Jecklin Disk using two Audio-Technica AT4022 microphones and a Sound Devices 702 recorder.  This is a rare opportunity to hear B-29 bomber performing a high speed low-altitude fly-over.  

This is very close to what it must have sounded like to the Allied prisoners of war who were starving at the Omori prison camp in Tokyo, when suddenly a B-29 flew low over the camp.  Many spirits were revived on that day for sure.

Recording levels were set with minimal gain in order to hopefully eliminate any clipping.  The sound is best heard with wide-range monitors turned up slightly.  If the lapels on your shirt flap during the fly-over you have the sound level set about right.

Recorded at the approach end of the Reading Air Show, three B-25 mitchell bombers, (Briefing Time)(Yankee Warrior) and (Panchito), perform a low-altitude fly-over.  Recorded with a Jecklin Disk using two Audio-Technica AT4022 microphones and a Sound Devices 702 recorder.  The recording gain was turned down in an effort to avoid clipping.  When listening, you should increase the gain on your system.  Wide-range monitors, good speakers, or headphones are best to realize the feel of the sounds.
