ous les mois, Musical Echoes vous propose deux sélections 100% vinyles : l’une roots/digital et l’autre reggae/dub/stepper, plus actuelle. Ce mois-ci, et pour la toute première fois, c’est Laurent, chanteur et MC du collectif et sound system Bhale Bacce qui prend le contrôle des platines ! Basé à Chartres (28), le crew est actif depuis 20 ans et a au moins 300 à 400 dates à son actif avec son reggae ragga hip hop caractéristique. Pour cette sélection, l’un des vocalistes délaisse le micro et passe à la sélection pour nous donner un aperçu qualitatif de sa collection roots avec ces 28 pépites qui nettoient les tympans en profondeur ! Reservoir Dub is happy to release a compilation of tunes composed and mixed by the french dubmaker Gary Clunk. This album is called “Archives of Dub vol.3” and includes 6 tunes + the 6 dub versions. Those Archives of Dub are a picture of a period : the tracks were mixed between 2015 and 2020… 100% stepper style! The first two volumes has been successfully released through the labels “French Dub Released” and “ODG Prod”.

For those who don’t know Gary Clunk : he’s a French dub producer since 2003 located around Bordeaux. He created Storm & Break records with his friend Hatman. He’s also involved in several projects like The Subvivors and was playing in the band Uptown Rebel a few years ago. His live dub spirit was mostly inspired by Improvisators Dub and Manutension. Gary Clunk represent – among some friends – The Bordeaux Dub School.

Archives of Dub vol.3 isavailable for free directly though our website from the 16th of December 2021 but also on bandcamp and the streaming platforms!

UK dub heavyweights since the 1980′s Alpha & Omega are amongst the earliest of the UK dub and reggae pioneers. With releases on the legendary Greensleeves label and their own Alpha & Omega records they played a vital role in the global rise of reggae music and soundsystem culture. Steppas Records presents a very unique A&O release: It’s not a re-issue, it’s not a re-press, it’s not a compilation: it’s ‘The Half That’s Never Been Told’, an unreleased ‘lost’ Alpha & Omega LP produced between 1989 and 1995, painstakingly remastered and featuring original A&O artwork, coming early 2014.

Badness is the powerful new collaboration between iconic Jamaican artist Ninjaman and Australian/UK producer Monkey Marc, released on Digikillaz.

A bass-heavy track that incorporates elements of hip hop and dancehall, the genre-blending nature of this song harkens back to a brief but formative time in the 90s when the cultures of American and Jamaican musics were more visibly intertwined. Ninjaman was a key player in that era, and his presence on Badness deepens the song’s connection to this important time in dancehall history.

Ninjaman, who is currently serving a life sentence for murder in Jamaica, infuses Badness with a cautionary message to the youth, telling them to reject a life of crime rather than meet his fate. Badness is a strong platform for the dancehall veteran’s warning, with potent lyrics like, 'Let me tell you this. Badness is a risk. Finger pon di trigger and you pull it and you miss'. 

When he founded his Jamaica All for Peace One Umbrella Movement community organization in 2008, Ninjaman said,
"Only a man like me who has lived the life I've lived can be a role model to these youths, and telling them that if they go the path of drugs, they will end up like this, or if they take up a gun, they will end up like that. I've been down that road ...and it's time for me to take up this cause to save the youths from a life that's not good. ... We know that violence will never be eliminated, but we can at least bring violence down".

Dameon Gayle of Warrior Films JA is currently filming the Badness music video in Kingston, Jamaica. An upcoming remix is in the works with UK dubstep pioneer and founder of Tectonic Records, Pinch, and UK dub poet, Rider Shafique.

Larry McDonald : Congas | Troy Simms : Sax | Emch : Riddim, Melodica, Dub Mixing & Effects | Recorded at Subatomic Sound in NYC & LA by Emch & The Bridge in Brooklyn by Amon |  Produced, Mixed, & Mastered by Emch at Subatomic Sound (ASCAP Lost Connection Music) | Shaolin Dub was written and recorded by Subatomic Sound System in the downtime during the pre-production of the "Super Ape Returns To Conquer" album with Lee "Scratch" Perry and inspired by the mostly instrumental African jazz influenced dub reggae on the original "Super Ape" album, but re-contextualized in a Subatomic production environment that includes both analog and digital recording & mixing technology. Percussion legend Larry McDonald worked with Count Ossie back during the inception of reggae and Nyabinghi drumming in the late 1960s, and that culmination of musical influences and spirituality was also in our ears and our minds at this time. The song brings together stylistic elements of current electronic music with foundation African rhythms, dub reggae, and Ethiopian jazz, balanced differently across the mixes on the release. Additional live instrument recording was done in Brooklyn at the Bridge Studio and is documented in the EMC educational video with Subatomic Sound System on live dub mixing. "Shaolin Dub" has been performed live throughout the 2017-2019 tours but never released until now.
