Isolation is no stranger to the Faroese people living 62 degrees north of nowhere isolated from the rest of the world. However, during the height of the global pandemic, the entire world experienced social isolation on a grand scale; cut off from family and friends. We all hunkered down, kept our distance from everyone protecting ourselves from infection. The lack of affection took a toll on everyone’s mental health and well being.

In the fall of 2020, Anna was alone in Iceland where she began studying for a Masters in Music with no possibility of interacting and making new friends. One night, out of unbearable loneliness, she tried to contact her husband and musical partner, Arnold Ludvig, composer and bassist of MonkeyRat in the Faroe Islands. Saddened by her inability to reach him, upon her return home from a park, words started overflowing her mind. Inspired, Anna quickly started jotting down all the words that kept pouring from her head and wrote this poem – Isolation. To this day, she is grateful and thanks her husband for being unreachable.

What started out as poem in Anna’s new artistic practice, Poetry w/ Electronics, it took a surprising turn to the sound of psychedelic rock reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s rock music era. The song performed live was recorded at Soundscape Studio in DK, by female award-winning sound engineer, Louise Nipper with MonkeyRat’s award-winning musicians, Alain Apaloo on guitar, Arnold Ludvig on bass, Jens Stoklund on drums and frontwoman, musical director, poet/lyricist, Anna Iachino on vocals. MonkeyRat delivered a pre-release live performance of Isolation at Copenhagen’s Winter Jazz Festival where the audience went wild rocking out to the chorus, What a Crazy World!

Inspired by Niels Uni Dam, very quick at whatever he does.  Every time I asked him to do something or make a correction, he would do it right away.  Each time, Niels Uni Dam fixed anything, I would always say to myself - damn, he's so quick to fix, so quick to fix!  By the third time, I said to myself, oh my God, his last name is Dam - I have to write a song about him! "Get into The Light" is MonkeyRat's latest digital single and enlightening message to the world.  It is their 1st Rap/Gospel collaboration, a star studded trinity of female African American & African inspiring and hair-raising gospel voices that will uplift your soul.  The featured singers on the track are - Debbie Cameron, daughter of the late great Etta Cameron, Deborah Herbert, and Joanita Lubega Zachariassen.  The international musicians and singers are a stellar cast of artists transcending racial boundaries through the power of music.

MonkeyRat with Anna Iachino's great lyrics, voice, animated storytelling and humor, sings, raps and perform's spoken-word, over Arnold Ludvig's superb virtuostic bass playing, slap bass technique and  well crafted music.  Together, they deliver an original and powerful expression, rooted mainly in Funk, with a little Reggae, Rap, Retro, Urban, Soul, hints of Jazz, Punk and the new addition of Gospel to the mix.

MonkeyRat - Money Takes Flight

Sooo funky!  :)  The funky rhythm guitar really drives the funky groove with the bass - pumping, slapping, and popping rhythm laid done for the funky drum beat.  A real funky dance number with a comical spin on the infectious chorus.

Good Morning Reykjavík Mastered

This is Anna's first time as co-composer with Arnold Ludvig.  The music came to her in a sudden flash and Ludvig was able to understand the music that Anna heard in her head.  The inspiration took place upon arriving in their flat in Reykjavík, Iceland, when they were welcomed and shaken by an earthquake.  Ludvig was studying at Listaháskóli Íslands for his Masters and one of his courses was working with Ableton Live.  This was also the first time that Ludvig incorporated the use of Ableton Live in his composing process for, Good Morning Reykjavík.  Anna and Ludvig were lucky to have lived in an area in Reykjavík surrounded by a patch of nature where fairies are believed to be living in the great big stones.  On one glorious morning, Anna stepped out on the balcony, got inspired and sang the second part of the song (a throwback to the 60's) to the fairies.  Then the question was how to blend the two very different styles of music - funk and retro together.  That's when Anna came up with the idea to use a radio tuning sound, which Ludvig found on Ableton live and other sources.  The sound of tap, which Anna took classes in Reykjavík and the constant sound of Icelanders saying já, já (roughly 'yow-yow' in English phonetic spelling), which Faroese people call Jau'ari were all elements that inspired Anna in the creation of Good Morning Reykjavík, a song that surely will move your feet.

U Gotta Love Being U, is MonkeyRat's first pop/singer-songwriter/folk pop, single and Anna's first co-written song with Hans Andrias Jacobsen and Beinir Troest Rasmussen. All three songwriters were selected in 2018 and participated in Koda's co-writing session at Reinsaríið, in the Faroe Islands.

Anna liked the universal message so much, that she later added a 2nd verse in 2019 and asked Alain Apaloo to sing the song, because of his distinct African accent and spiritual journey within. As producer, Anna heard soft sounding oohs and ahhs in her head and asked African American singer, Deborah Herbert to once again lend her beautiful soothing voice for the final touch.

In these dark and uncertain times, U Gotta Love Being U lifts the spirit and raises the vibration spreading a message of positivity and love.
