What If

Bhakti is a Sanskrit word meaning "devotion," "love," or "attachment”. It’s about a loving, emotional relationship with a personal god, and can also involve devotion to a formless ultimate reality or an enlightened being. 

I wrote these lyrics last year when I released them as a spoken word poem in a track called Divine Commedia dell-Arte.

You sent me the colours of a summer’s dawn 
On the morning of Solstice, last year. 
Wedding band gold and Bridie’s slipper pink,
Just one small, shy honeysuckle flower…
But it was enough to make your feelings clear. 

The bloom then faded, and it followed the Sun 
On its passage down to the Underworld, 
I looked every day, but no more have come. 
Yet your passion for me will last and last, 
For long after this life’s romance is done. 

You make love to me in every dimension, 
In every realm, but not, it seems, this one. 
I know you’re there, hiding in your creation 
Your love song, your maya simulation 
That masks you from the sight of my heart.
The juggler, the trickster, the mercurial mixer
Of this Venetian carnival’s Commedia Dell’arte. 

Sometimes you leave me tiny dew-drop diamonds 
To show you care, to show you’re really there 
In my night garden at dusk; then at midnight 
You come in my dreams to spirit me away
And up the stairway to paradise, 
To paradise … and your Divine Play.

Bhakti

We may begin with an image which has always been the favorite Hua-yen method of exemplifying the manner in which things exist.   Far away in the heavenly abode of the great god Indra, there is a wonderful net which has been hung by some cunning artificer in such a manner that it stretches out infinitely in all directions.   In accordance with the extravagant tastes of deities, the artificer has hung a single glittering jewel in each "eye" of the net, and since the net itself is infinite in dimension, the jewels are infinite in number.  There hang the jewels, glittering like stars of the first magnitude, a wonderful sight to behold.   If we now arbitrarily select one of these jewels for inspection and look closely at it, we will discover that in its polished surface there are reflected all the other jewels in the net, infinite in number.   Not only that, but each of the jewels reflected in this one jewel is also reflecting all the other jewels, so that there is an infinite reflecting process occurring.  The Hua-yen school has been fond of this image, mentioned many times in its literature, because it symbolizes a cosmos in which there is an infinitely repeated interrelationship among all the members of the cosmos. This relationship is said to be one of simultaneous mutual identity and mutual inter-causality.
This review of the book "Hua-yen Buddism" by Francis H. Cook, PA State University Press, 1977 in the magazine The CoEvolution Quarterly, No. 22 Summer 1979 inspired this tune.

A voice speaks from the middle of grief not the loud kind, but the quiet kind that you maybe can hear in empty rooms and unasked questions. 
The song follows someone walking through the spaces a loved one left behind, imagining how life might have felt if they had stayed. 
Every hallway, 
every chair, 
every silent corner,
is a reminder of what once was.

Two friends still wait in the shadows of memory, hoping for a return that will never come. 
The song keeps circling the same impossible question: “What if you never left?”
Would their lives look different? 
Would the light still be there? 
Would laughter still survive?
