Ten capable college students combining their creative efforts to produce a new sound in the world of music is certainly no phenomenon. However, when that sound contains a refreshing quality not often heard in a competitive media glutted with an all too monotonous montage of electric noise, you have something unique and worth savoring. The SOUND OF FIVE did not simply "happen" overnight. Under the direction of Dick Griffiths, ten musicians (five vocalists and five instrumentalists) have steadily worked toward perfecting a total sound based on a combination of styles and techniques. These ten talented people came together through their association with the music department at Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois, and from the beginning it was evident that as a group they possessed a beautifully workable and creative rapport which would enable them to achieve something musically important. As their combined efforts began to jell into a unitalent it was apparent that each member, through his own diversity, would be able to add something slightly extraordinary giving the SOUND OF FIVE a universal appeal. This appeal is certainly verified by the range of audiences to whom they have played.....from sophisticated supper club to high school assembly. I have watched the SOUND OF FIVE display their ability to bring a complacent group of individuals into a unified experience of pure pleasure. They radiate an inner warmth and pride in accomplishment which was achieved through long hours of rehearsal, experimentation and sheer desire, yet there remains an unusual relationship of personal closeness among these ten people which makes them a revelation on the current music scene.....and just damn good fun. --R.
