Bonsai was written on a rainy New Year's Day in Brooklyn. It was 4 am. I couldn't sleep. I started playing chords on the piano, looking out the window to the fire escape filled with plants where raindrops were falling off of. I missed my lover. She was in Paris where it was daytime. The new year had me feeling simultaneously lonely yet hopeful. I longed for summer; memories that made me feel multiculturally connected and brought me joy. These moments molded Bonsai.

Café is a song that I wrote in Portuguese and English during a time when I felt helpless, directionless, and alone. I didn’t know how to deal with overwhelming feelings of uncertainty. Then, someone came into my life unexpectedly that brought me laughter, comfort, and happiness.

Sometimes, we don’t know why certain people come into our lives..and maybe we’ll never know. Café is a reminder and declaration of gratitude for the people that bring us glimpses of joy.

Respira (English translation: verb. breathe) was written off the Pacific Coast Highway overlooking Malibu Beach on one of Monnize's camping trips. As she acknowledges how life can become overwhelming and confusing, she assures listeners may find peace when we breathe to become present in the moment.

Fast was written when I recently moved to LA. I unconsciously created a fantasy of someone I wanted to be with. My world came crashing down when I realized they didn't feel the same way.
